How to Become A Millionaire

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai
New Zealand, April 27, 2000 (Originally in English)
When you practice spiritually, you have everything, for example, you have more friends now than you ever dreamed of, you have maybe more kids and work harder than before, and have more money, some of you, and better jobs. Or even if you have the same amount of money, you know how to manage it better, and so you have more than before. You travel more than you ever did before with the same money, because you know how to do things better, and therefore you're just happier. You have more than before, even though maybe your income is the same.

Quan Yin Practitioners are Gates to Heaven

I read an article in a magazine, "How to Become a Millionaire." Do you want to hear about it? (Yes.) It is very logical. We give a lot of money away, not a lot, but for us, it is a lot. Actually, it is also a lot. Millions of dollars is not a little bit of money in this world. Even though we can't compare ourselves to Bill Gates (founder and chairman of Microsoft Corp., one of the richest men in the world, who gives away a lot of money). We are different "gates", but we are also gates. [Laughter] "Quan Yin Fa Mun" means "the gate to heaven, the gate to the world of God." We also contribute a lot of money, for our capacity. Other people also think it's a lot! It's not a lot compared to many other people or the World Bank, but it's a lot for what we earn, for the ordinary actions of people. Most people don't give like that.

So I do give, and a lot of people think that I'm very rich. I am, also, but I'm not as rich as they think I am, which is good. But if they came to us, suppose if they were me and had that kind of money, they wouldn't look that rich; they wouldn't be able to give that much, not because they don't want to. It's just that they don't know how to manage so that it will just stretch out like that.

Spiritual Practice Brings Abundance

So when I read the article, I thought it was cool. I had done it all already -- "How to Become a Millionaire". I knew it all already. But when I read the article, it looked like I had written it myself. Because it's just natural -- some people have it naturally. But it is also because we are enlightened. We practice the enlightened way and the way of love, and we have very few wants in this world.
Just like the way you are now -- before, you had a lot, but you still thought that you didn't have enough, but now, however much you have, you can manage. You still can come to New Zealand, Thailand, or whatever retreat, provided that you have a holiday. You can always manage, and that's a wonder. And you feel that it's always enough. And you always feel loved. I'm only one person, but all of you feel that I love you alone, that I have enough love for everyone. It is because we practice the way of love.
We just know how to have enough, just like knowing how to save money to become richer. It's not necessarily because you earn more money, but you save more and you want less of the unnecessary things, and then you save more money! So when you save one dollar, it's just like you earn one more dollar. And it's even better than earning one more dollar, because when you save one dollar, you don't need to go to work for that. You just cut out some unnecessary things. Before, you went out to buy everything, but now you have to think carefully. Before, you went out and bought everything, but now you go straight to the tofu. You save money, time, and thinking.

Before, you cooked all kinds of things, but now just tofu and chop choy, and tomorrow, chop choy and tofu. It's a simple life. Before, you went everywhere, and maybe you needed to book a hotel for yourself and your husband, and spent a lot of money. And now, you just pack a tent and camp out there in the fresh air; it's natural. Oxygen -- there's a lot around you, because you camp under the trees and on the grass. You feel good, light, and economical, also.

We live together, and we're happy. We don't need to stay in a big hotel to be happy. In fact, we're happier than when we stay in a big hotel because we have common ideas and interests, we love each other, and we just feel so good. And the air, the food, and healthy atmosphere make us feel so good.

You don't have to earn more money; you just have to know how to live your life, because you have only one life, this life. Whether I speak the truth or not, whether you have heaven or not, or you have reincarnation or not, this life is all you know. If you don't manage well, you cannot live freely and you cannot feel happy about it. You have to do what you really want, and what is good for you.
Of course, you will tell me that then you can do anything you want, but it's not true. What's good for you is what you should do. A vegetarian diet is healthy, and meditation calms your nerves, makes you brighter, more clever and more loving. That's good for you. It's not that you just do anything you want. Of course, we can do anything we want. But what's good for us -- that's what the clever people do. Saving money is better than earning money. Anything you save is like you earn it, except that you don't have to go out and work for it, or even pay taxes on it. Anything you earn is yours. And you can do anything you want. You can give yourself something you like, or give to needy people. That's what we do all the time. I do it also. What I tell you, I do.

Follow Master's Perfect Example

I don't always do it so that it's written about in the News magazine. Most of the things I do are not written about in the magazine. It may be written about because certain people happen to be there and know about it, and write reports about it, or it is official, like a concert, and everyone has to know. That's how it is. Otherwise, I do it every day, all the time, every chance I get.

One time, one of the attendants laughed and said, "Master, how come McDonald's meals are so expensive? It's the most expensive restaurant that I have ever seen!" You know why? Because when we went there, we saw some homeless people looking for garbage, and I gave them about $500. So, that's why he said, "Oh, my God, just eating some french fries and two colas cost $500. [Laughter] We always share, whenever we can. Most of the time, we see homeless people hanging around there or looking for garbage, and I cannot bear it, so I give them something. I give them what I have on hand. So he makes jokes: "I didn't know McDonald's was the most expensive restaurant in town. He says, "We eat only two orders of french fries, and drink two medium colas, and we even have to serve ourselves and even stand in line, and it's so expensive." Because in a first class restaurant, you sit there, you have napkins and everything, and the waiter comes and serves you like a king. Then you pay maybe two, three or five hundred dollars, it depends. But for only two people, two or three hundred is already expensive. But he says he can't imagine that McDonald's is more expensive. He just makes jokes.

So these things we do because we love other people, because they are us, anyway. So there is nothing to talk about. But sometimes, of course, we write about it in the News magazine, because other disciples also need to learn from the example. Also, most of the things that I do are open, so people can know about them. It's just so that we know about the things we do, just like you tell me about what you do, and the News reports to you what I do. So, we keep in touch, like we know each other's ways of life. It's like knowing each other. It's not because we want to boast for everyone else to know.

If we wanted to boast so that everyone would know about it, we would put it in "Reuters," or another big news company, and not just write about it in our small magazine. But this is a way of life that we live all the time. It should be the way of life. Everyone should do it. I'm very proud of you that you do it all the time. I know you do it individually, and still you have enough money to spare to come here, to go to retreats, to come to see me whenever possible. You see, has your life become richer or not? (Yes!) [Applause]

I give all the time, and I still have a lot. I mean, for me it's a lot. What do I need? When I come to see you, of course, I wear this; this is my own design, so, it's just for fun. When I'm not with you, I just throw it off quickly, because it's heavy and I don't really like it. And I eat maybe once or twice a day, whatever is leftover or whatever is new. If it's new, I eat it. If it's leftover, I eat it. What do I need? That's why I still have a lot of money, because I don't spend, not because I earn more. Just like you, you earn just like before, and you might even have more kids now than before, but you still have more money. You still feel life is richer for you than before, and you feel more satisfied that you have more than enough, right? That's the trick.

Manage Wisely to Become a Millionaire

A lot of people are millionaires, and no one knows about it. Everyone thinks becoming a millionaire is difficult, but it's not. And especially people who are already millionaires, they keep themselves that way because they are very natural; they are frugal. They don't even drive expensive new cars. They just buy secondhand cars so they don't have to pay luxury taxes, for example. They just drive normal cars. Most millionaires don't drive expensive cars. They drive reasonable, safe cars, a Ford or Jeep even. So they drive anything that's safe. They don't really live the way we think millionaires should. Otherwise, your money goes fast even if you are a millionaire. So they save a lot! They look for ways to save, like they drive the kinds of cars that use less petrol, and they stay in neighborhoods and houses they can afford, so they don't drain their savings. In a lot of ways, they just save here and there, and then their money is always stable.

And some people who don't earn a lot but spend a lot and drive fast cars and all that really have a lot, but also a lot of credit, a lot of mortgages and debts. And the millionaire people drive normal cars, because they know how to organize their lives so that they don't go into debt. A lot of millionaires live next door to you, and you don't know it, because they don't flash their money around. They know what they are doing. They know the value of money. They don't overspend. They are just naturally that way. That's why they become rich. They are naturally rich; they naturally know how to handle money.

And sometimes they also win the lotto, of course. [Laughter] But they also invest money; for example, if they earn $40,000 per year, they put fifteen or twenty percent aside to invest in whatever bank. So perhaps in ten or twenty years' time, they will have hundreds of thousands of dollars out of just five or ten thousand dollars they invested each month, they put in the bank. They know how to organize their money. They don't spend all their earnings. They leave some for investment.

And then in no time, you become rich. For example, if you put away $10,000 today, ten years later, it becomes $50,000 after investing in some bank, but that is slow. Otherwise, the rich can start their own businesses. That's how they become rich more quickly. It's more risky, but that's life. Either you take risks or you just live an ordinary, very slow, day-to-day life, and earn not much money. But still, if you can manage well, you will be okay, because life is simpler now. Tofu is cheaper than beefsteak, just a little different, a piece of tofu instead of that piece of meat. We're healthy; we're okay. Look at me!

Looking Good on Both the Inside and Outside

All of you look good, too. I'm proud of you. You are proud of yourselves, and come out and say, "I'm vegetarian. Look at me." That's good. You are very beautiful. You just haven't put on makeup now, so you look less beautiful, but already you are too beautiful. If you put on makeup, everyone will die. [Laughter] All your husbands are dying already. You're getting too beautiful, and they don't want to leave you. That's why some of them are so afraid. You got initiation, and they got so afraid you might become a nun or something; they love you too much. You look so beautiful, more and more every day.

Some husband had already left his wife, and after she got initiation, he came back and said, "Wow, how come you're so beautiful?" and moved back in. It's the same with some wives, who had left their husbands already and didn't want them. But after initiation, they came back and said, "Oh, my God, he's changed! He's a new man," and they moved back in again, no problem. They left young boyfriends or new boyfriends, or whatever, and went back to their husbands because they are more spiritually beautiful now.

Once you are beautiful inside, people see you are beautiful outside as well. That is normally the case. So, try to fight off all these Romeos, but continue with your practice. Your life is getting better and better; I need not tell you. I'm just saying this so in case someone doesn't know it yet, they can verify it with you. Your life is an example of love and spiritual blessings. There is no need to even preach to anyone. They can just look at your life, the way you walk in your life, the way you present yourself to the world. That's better than thousands of books talking about spiritual issues. You are the book. You are the best example, the best doctrine, the best religious theory ever presented to anyone.

There was a story in Mexico about a Master, a long time ago. He was very famous -- Quetzalcoatl. He told this story to his disciples: There were two men in the same group, and one was very diligent; it looked like he was very religious. He went to church every Sunday and he was the first one in line at any holy activity, and the last one to leave. He never missed any opportunity to go to church, but he never did anything else. And another guy never went to church, but he went to work every day. He did whatever was his duty. And whatever he earned, he used to take care of his family, and also gave away to poor people. He even gave to the church, too, to repair the church.

So, Quetzalcoatl said that the man who never went to church was holy and was already a "church" himself. But the guy who went to church every day just went there. Everyone respected the guy who went to church very much, thinking he was very holy, and spoke lowly about the guy who never went to church. But actually, he was going out to take care of all the "churches" in his area.
Whatever he could do, he did, sometimes working extra so that he could earn a little more money to give to whomever. That's what he did every day. So the Master said the first one who went to church was all right, but the second one was the church himself. So, we can be "churchgoers", or "churches" ourselves. It's up to us. I think all of you are churches. I have no need to build any churches.

Master's Churches

Some people ask me why I don't have any churches or temples, and I say "I have no need; I have millions of them running around." [Applause] I say, "Nowadays is the modern time, with fast technology. Everything is mobile: mobile phones, mobile homes, mobile cars, mobile temples." You are my mobile temples. We can communicate anytime, go anywhere; we're very flexible. A brick building is only fixed in one place, but we run around; we are "run-around temples". That's very cool!

Talking, anyone can do, but living what you talk is harder. You can do all that; you can talk, and you can do, as well. That's what is great about you. I told you that I came to make you great. Whether I am great or not is of no consequence. I'm only one. A great Master, a great teacher, is not one who makes himself great, but one who makes everyone else great. If your students are good, it means you are good. Otherwise, it is no good. So, whether I am great or not doesn't matter. As long as you are great, that's fine. And by your grace, I'm also great. Then, "thank you very much". I like that, too. But to tell you honestly, if all the world were enlightened, no one would even want me. I'd be happy just being a private citizen.

Every time, it's very difficult to leave you. I want you to know that. I want you to know it, because you think only you don't want to leave. I also don't want to leave, but I have to do my work, and so I put my personal feelings aside. That's all. Otherwise, I could stay with you forever. Believe me, you are the best people. Where else should I go? You like to stay with good friends. Everyone does -- me too. But it's fine. We stay here [Master points to Her heart] together. Thank you. I love you.

Report from Togo West Africa Retreat

[Lome] After enjoying a two-day retreat that ran concurrently with the recent international retreat in Korea, disciples in Togo longed for more spiritual nourishment, so we arranged a two and a half day West Africa retreat. Many disciples from six cities in Ghana, Benin and Togo participated.

This retreat was held to celebrate the spiritual rebirth of Ghana and Benin. In the last few months, these two countries have spiritually blossomed, joining our large worldwide family. The schedule for the retreat had a format similar to those of Master's international retreats, including plenty of meditation, videos, and spicy African food, but, of course, lacking the main ingredient; the physical presence of our beloved Master.

Although She was not physically present, we all felt Master's blessing power during the retreat. One night, for example, we looked up to notice that the sky above the Center was clear, but there were clouds everywhere else. This reminded us of Master's remark that the Light from group meditation is so strong that it can dissolve clouds.

Most disciples said that the inner Light and Sound were both much stronger for them during the retreat, and many had great experiences. Everything went smoothly, as if perfectly planned by Master! Even the inconvenience of such a large group working, interacting and meditating in one house was not noticed, since we moved as one, supporting and helping each other.

Caption: After two recent retreats, West African initiates are much stronger, and cannot wait for the next one.

Elevation of the Soul

Supreme Master Ching Hai's Latest Audio Tapes

CE3 (Five tapes, in Chinese)

CE3 is a series of Master's early lectures now being published for the first time. In these discourses, Master explains in everyday language the meaning of idealism (how our eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and consciousness affect our feelings and thoughts), and how to avoid Maya's traps of matter, sensation and perception. She also narrates stories about many spiritual practitioners and discusses, in simple terms, the less easily understood parts of the Buddhist scriptures. These lectures offer unique, practical teachings that can help us to overcome latent obstacles in our spiritual cultivation of body, speech, and mind.

A Pure and Simple Heart Works Best

By a Quan Yin messenger in Africa

Due to the sincerity of Truth seekers in Central Africe, Master sent a Quan Yin messenger to the region. The local people had longed for God and waited years to learn the Quan Yin Method, so Master rewarded them with fantastic experiences during their initiations. The hearts of the African people are very simple, and free of the many complications of the West, so they are able to see God very easily, and the inner Master blesses them abundantly. Spiritually speaking, they are rich beyond our dreams.

In Africa, nearly everyone who is given the transmission during Convenient Method immediately sees inner light or visions, and many hear the inner celestial music (Immediate Enlightenment with just the Convenient Method!). At initiations, even before asking who had experiences, one can already tell who did from the smiles on their faces. Of course, it is Master's boundless loving power at work, but there must also be a difference between these pure, simple people and others.

I remember how difficult it was for me, as a Westerner, to have such delightful experiences. I complained to Master both during and after initiation, but still experienced nothing compared to what my mind had expected, and nothing compared to what the "Blessed at Heart" in Africa have seen.

Looking back, I can see that it was my thinking that hindered me - my complicated and often arrogant conceptions of who I was. But after many years of practice, I have become humbler, simpler and purer at heart. In addition, I have felt great love from the African people, and believe that they are excellent examples for all of us in learning simplicity and faith in the face of numerous challenges.

While on the Path

The Golden World

By brother initiate Li Wenfeng, Taipei, Formosa

As far back as the early 1990's, I was already very earnest in my desire to pursue spiritual practice. I had just gotten a new job, and noticed that I had a strange colleague who was always smiling, though he seldom spoke; besides, he was a vegetarian. I had been a vegetarian for some time as well, and thought that I was great. I practiced dynamic chi kung and meditated a little. Very often, I would smell fragrances from different astral dimensions, so I was quite proud of myself. But for no apparent reason, I found myself following this colleague around, and could not understand why. Observing his cheerfulness, I asked what method he practiced and who his Master was. He told me that he practiced the Quan Yin Method with Supreme Master Ching Hai, and offered to lend me a book, which I was delighted to accept. As soon as I got home, I read Master's book attentively. Then strange things happened: the words began to dance, and Master's cover photo changed rapidly into many different forms within fractions of a second. This was a treasure, I thought, and since then, I have always carried the book with me. I felt really great!

When my colleague told me that Master was coming to give a lecture in Tainan in March, of course, I promised to go. That day, the venue was packed. The lecture changed my whole life. I firmly believed that I had found the reincarnation of Buddha and Jesus Christ. My entire person -- my actions, speech, and thoughts -- became calm, relaxed, and peaceful. These internal changes were beyond words and could only be realized by the heart. That night, Master appeared in my dream. She spoke to me and saved me from danger, and I felt truly blessed! But that was just the beginning. After I started wearing a picture of Her, I constantly smelled the fragrance of flowers and fruit. When I was certain after an unsuccessful search that there was no such fruit in my home, I knew that Master was blessing me again. I felt truly content.

I did not receive initiation immediately because I thought that it would be better to wait until I was prepared in terms of my actions, speech, and thoughts. On the last Sunday in June, just as I was about to fall asleep in the evening, I saw my body on the bed below as Master suddenly took me up away from the Earth. She was very lovely, just like a good friend of mine. She took me to a very beautiful dimension, where we stopped to rest in a pavilion. Golden light radiated from all things there; it was fantastic! Master called the name of Amitabha Buddha. All of a sudden, a barefooted, celestial Being appeared out of nowhere -- it was Amitabha Buddha, and His body shone with golden light! I thought He loved beauty, because He was wearing bracelets on His arms and wrists, and even anklets and earrings! I suppose that all great Saints love to be beautiful.

Amitabha Buddha showed great respect for Master, and I shared some of the honor because I was with Her. We communicated through the spirit. After a while, we left that place and Master spoke to me. We did not come to the world of gold at once, however. On our way, we passed through many realms and saw many things -- a fairy peach garden, an old man with a big head, white beard and cane, the dimension of large Buddhas, and a world of little dwarfs. In the hierarchy of the universe, the higher the dimension, the more transparent it is and the more brilliwer realms are coarser, and by comparison, we can say that the Earth is a rather turbid planet.

On our way back, Master left me in a certain realm for quite a while. There, everything was of golden radiant matter, but different than the Amitabha Land of golden crystal light. There were gold dragons and phoenixes, which also emitted golden light but were not transparent. The gold dragons were really cute. They flew in front of me and licked my face. However, I could not see myself; I could only feel my existence. The atmosphere there was very comfortable, and there was no pressure at all. The gold dragons were more lovely and benign than human children, and the graceful and beautiful phoenixes dazzled me with their light. I wept with joy and didn't want to return to my physical body.

On another occasion, I was taking a nap during my lunch break, while embracing Master's book. As soon as I lay down, I heard the thunderous roar of the tides. Again I cried and told my colleague about it. But as soon as I did, the sound disappeared. It was amazing that I was the only one who had heard it. Everyone else was sound asleep, and there was no radio nearby. Later, I realized that it was the inner Sound stream. Even more incredible was the fact that my eyes could behold two realms at the same time. One was this mundane world, and the other was beyond my knowledge -- a transparent golden world, where the trees shone with golden light that appeared vividly before my eyes.

These are some of the wonderful experiences that I had after seeing Master in person, reading Her books, watching and listening to Her video and audio tapes, and wearing Her photo. When I was initiated on July 1, 1990, I also had a very good experience. It was a fine day, and it was arranged that we would wait in the Bamboo Grove in Hsihu. When Master arrived and the initiation began, She disappeared suddenly and all I could see was a very bright sun; even the bamboo trees vanished. I then had no doubt that Master was the messenger of Buddha and God.

After my initiation, I was placed in charge of the Chiku Center in Tainan. One day at midnight, I was on my way to the washroom when I saw a stranger trying to open the gate. I asked him what he was doing, and he said that he was curious and wanted to take a look inside. I told him that it was private property and it was inconvenient for him to come in. After he left, I couldn't help but marvel at Master's fantastic arrangement. In one day, there are twenty-four hours, 1,440 minutes, and 86,400 seconds. Yet, I happened to be there precisely at the moment, significantly, at very early dawn, when this man was trying to open the gate. I realized then that there were invisible guardian angels protecting the divine atmosphere of the Center.

On another occasion, I was sleeping on an easy chair on a stormy and rainy night. Lightning accompanied by loud thunder-claps struck at the Chiku Center, and many newly planted trees were damaged. That night I beheld another wonderful vision. I saw a fully armored warrior standing right in front of my chair. With golden crystalline light radiating from his body, he looked very valiant. I felt that he was lovingly protecting me and the Center, as though he were ready to die for us. I do not know how long he stood there; each time I opened my sleepy eyes, he was always there. But he was gone by the time I got up for meditation at four in the morning.

All this goes to prove that when we are doing Master's work, all the guardian angels and great divine Beings in the universe come to help us. It also proves that Master's meditation Centers are the best places for spiritual practice. How blessed and fortunate we are to be able to practice this supreme Method!

The Dragon's Auspicious Signs

By brother initiate Hsu He-yi, Tainan, Formosa

Although in the past I studied many religious scriptures and Buddhist sutras, I never really understood their doctrines. Then, one day, I struck up a casual conversation with an elderly neighbor and was highly impressed by the miraculous incidents that he recounted about Supreme Master Ching Hai. I knew practically nothing about Her and asked him for some books that could help me know Her better. So, my neighbor lent me The Key of Immediate Enlightenment, Volume I, the very sight of which filled me with joy, and I read it whenever I had time.

One day, when I was half-way through the book, I had a wonderful vision in a dream. I saw an auspicious gold and green dragon soaring high in the sky on the west side of my house, near my neighbor's residence. The dragon looked powerful and majestic as it circled around the house three times in a clockwise direction, with a silvery-gold fireball leading its way. Then, suddenly, my neighbors burst into joyful celebration as they lit firecrackers and congratulated me. I woke up and found that it was only a dream. Yet, I remained very blissful at heart to have seen this auspicious sign!

After reading Master's book, I dared not eat meat anymore, because I felt I would be eating my own flesh. In addition, I successfully overcame my addiction to tobacco, alcohol, and gambling, and was extremely blessed to receive initiation on May 5, 2000, after listening to Master's lecture at the Taoyuan County Stadium. Previously, I had often attended social gatherings on the excuse of fulfilling my business duties. At these times, I consumed much meat and alcohol, and it was not unusual for me to come home completely inebriated. Though my family members are not initiates, they are overjoyed to see the drastic change in me after becoming a vegetarian and a Quan Yin practitioner. In fact, they are so grateful that they are planning to hold a thanksgiving ritual!

The Unfathomable Ancient Master

By initiate-to-be Li, Tianjin, Mainland China

Prior to encountering Master's teachings, I had been practicing an esoteric form of meditation for over ten years, and always meditated diligently until midnight each day. Several years back, a colleague gave me a copy of The Key of Immediate Enlightenment sample booklet, but I did not even bother to turn the pages. I was complacent, thinking that I was a senior spiritual practitioner who had good experiences. I had supernatural powers and could heal people. Even though I could not cure every patient I met, I could at least cure nine out of ten, and give a lecture for hours without being repetitious. When I meditated, all I had to do was place my left foot over my right foot, and my soul would be projected out of my body. Therefore, I didn't believe in "immediate enlightenment".

Last fall, my colleague again gave me one of Master's books. He said, "Try to read it! This "Immediate Enlightenment" book is really good!" Not wanting to embarrass my friend and also out of curiosity, I brought the book home to find out what this "Immediate Enlightenment" was all about. I browsed through the first few pages, but found no clues. Fortunately, I was patient enough to explore further; this time, what I found was incredible!

This was not an ordinary book; it was a holy scripture whose true meaning was beyond words. I had studied many scriptures and practiced an esoteric method for many years, but had never realized until then what the real scripture and real esoteric method were. Included on every page of Master's book were not ordinary words but divine experiences. I put the book under my pillow, and the effect was amazing. I experienced a fantastic force that I had never felt in my ten years of esoteric practice. It was absolutely effortless for me to adhere to the vegetarian diet required to follow Master's practice. Without realizing it, I totally forgot the taste of fish and meat, and even lost my appetite for them. The only difficult thing was quitting my decades-old addiction to smoking. I told myself, "Maybe I should pray for Master's help." The response was immediate -- I quit smoking.

Even though I had such wonderful experiences, I still wanted to test Master's power. So I used an esoteric method to receive Master's energy, and the result was incredible. I had never experienced such Light and Power before. For many years, I had visited many spiritual places and great practitioners, but rarely had anyone been able to convince me to follow them. Only this "Ancient Master" and Her method of Immediate Enlightenment convinced me completely.
I no longer dare to heal people with supernatural power. Even so, invisible beings that I had previously offended often come to trouble me. After reading the Ancient Master's books, I realize that this is karmic retribution, which I must endure in silence. When I cannot bear it any longer, I pray to the Ancient Master for help, and She has never failed me. Now I am waiting to be initiated by the Ancient Master, for I want to attain eternal liberation in this lifetime.

Aphorisms

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Hsihu, Formosa
August 13, 1989 (Originally in Chinese)

By practicing the Quan Yin Method, our vibrations become very fast and we feel more energetic, just like young people. We become more alert, able to figure out problems easily,
and smart like young people. Therefore, we can say that we become rejuvenated.

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Tainan, Formosa March 15, 1990 (Originally in Chinese)

The person who enjoys the greatest freedom is the one who is most responsible;
because he is responsible, he is free.

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, CA, USA May 25, 1989 (Originally in English)

A self-realized soul emits a kind of Godly fragrance and supra-mundane Virtue that everyone loves to be near, and everyone feels naturally comfortable with.

Selected Questions and Answers

Angels

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai
Brazil June 18, 1989 (Originally in English)

Q: Are spirits born or do a predetermined number already exist?

M: There are some old; there are some new, but mostly old. The old are those who are born as humans and have never done many things wrong; they keep coming back as humans again.

The new are those from the mineral kingdom, from the flora kingdom, trom the animal kingdom. They evolve and become men. These are a little bit dull in spirit, a little bit slow in reactions, or maybe even fierce. If he was from the stone and now became man, then he will look like a stone -- cold, blank, stupid, stubborn. If he was a tree last life, then he will be cooler, nicer, but also dumb, a little bit low in intelligence. These need many reincarnations to learn perfection.

And some are from the kingdom of heaven, not the kingdom of God, but the kingdom of heaven --like angels, like some of the devas or heavenly spirits. They descend on Earth and become men, because they want to practice perfection. They want to look for a Master and get liberation from birth and death. They want to become a Master themselves. So these are the different kinds of spirits, old and new.

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai Dublin, Ireland June 7, 1999 (Originally in English)

Q: Master, do angels and spiritual guides exist? How important are they in our spiritual evolution? Is it easier to communicate with them than with God?

M: They do exist; they exist everywhere. It's just that our spiritual eyes are not open, so we don't see them. When we are enlightened, we can see them. Some people, who are not even deliberately doing any meditation but have some previous experience of being blessed by another Master, by chance, also see angels and spiritual guides.

They will help us to certain extent, but only God can help us all the way through. So in the beginning, the angels and the spiritual guides probably just stand by and help us a little bit through the basic requirements. Later, we will become our own master, and then God is our only guide. But the angels are around all the time. They will serve us and will be our helpers.

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai Amsterdam, Netherlands May 9, 1999 (Originally in English)

Q: What do You think about the angels?

M: They are my friends. [Applause] They do anything I want; they are very helpful people. The Father sends them to help me. After you are initiated, I will also ask Hirm to supply some angels for you as personal assistants, at least five for each of you. Is that enough? [Applause]

You can see them in meditation; you can request their help. Sometimes you can see them with your eyes open.

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai Portugal May 7, 1999 (Originally in English)

Q: You focus on the direct connection with God. How do You see the great cosmic hierarchy with potential mediators, such as angels, archangels, cherubims, seraphims, etc.?

M: They are our friends. No problem! They all stand by while you are going up. I will teach you how to say hello to them and pass by them quickly. It is true that if you don't know how, and if you are not introduced to them by a teacher, they might make trouble sometimes. But we will introduce you to them and tell them to take care of you.

The angels are our servants, sometimes. The higher you go, the more they worship you. Sometimes you go to a higher dimension, and all the angels, all the beings on that planet, line up to worship you. They are so happy to serve you, they call themselves your servants.

Music and Life

Music Reverberates to Heaven

By brother initiate Hsieh Huan-tsai, Taipei, Formosa

I am not sure if it was my inner yearning or Master's call of love that led me to join the Taipei Chorus. I used to be arrogant when learning anything, but this time, under the professional guidance of a sister initiate, I became less and less confident of myself after each practice with the Chorus. It had been more than a decade since I had sung a musical note, and I had lost all sense of musicality. I was over forty and was joining a chorus for the first time in my life! As soon as I opened my mouth, the sister immediately called me an "unpolished" jadestone, and despite her repeated efforts, she failed to change me into a "polished" piece of jade. I was so discouraged that I wanted to quit, but then I thought, since I had already joined the Chorus, it was only proper that I should persevere bravely and leave everything else to God.

As the day of the performance approached, each Chorus member seemed to have taken a booster shot and improved dramatically; their singing was already on a different level from that of our first practice. Affected by this inexplicable force, I became more and more nervous. When I drove to and from work each day, I continuously played Master's musical compositions and practiced repeatedly by following Her singing, hoping to grasp some subtle points that could improve my own singing skills. After work, I drove to a secluded mountainside, where I sang loudly, although none of the nearby birds, insects or frogs dared to join me. Regardless of their disapproval, I still sang with all my heart until I forgot myself in the music.

On May 5th, the Taipei Chorus finally went on stage. Perfectly prepared, we sang in such concord that the fifty Chorus members sounded like one person singing. Our harmonious voices reverberated so powerfully that they soared to heaven, and even I felt extremely touched. I am very grateful to God for granting me this unforgettable opportunity to immerse myself in Master's ocean of love through music.

Amazing Grace

By sister initiate Grace, Taipei, Formosa

Even before I was initiated by Master Ching Hai, I loved music very much, especially the ethereal singing of Greek singer Nana Mouskouri. I was enchanted by her performance of the Christian hymn "Amazing Grace." Each time I heard her sing this song, I couldn't help but listen to it over and over again. The familiar lyrics "Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound" never failed to touch me deeply, making me feel like a traveler who misses home very much after being away for a long time. Even as tears rolled down my cheeks, I would continue to listen to the song. After my initiation, I suddenly understood that the "sound" referred to in the lyrics is precisely the inner Sound stream that Master Ching Hai talks about. During my daily meditation, I listen to this inner Sound stream, and have become increasingly open and tolerant, while the hindrances on my spiritual path have given way to encouraging strength. Now, whenever I listen to this song, I find that my earlier depressed feelings have been replaced by immense gratitude.

Incredibly, even my husband, who strongly objected to my pursuing spiritual practice, recently asked me to record this one song for him over and over again on a single cassette tape, so that he could listen to it continuously, just as I had done earlier. Could this be a sign that this stubborn stone will soon be...?

In the Bible, Jesus Christ said to His disciples: With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26). To show my gratitude for this amazing grace, I gave myself the English name "Grace", because I know everything is God's grace, nothing but God's grace....

Amazing Grace

(Originally in English)
Lyrics by John Newton (composed probably between 1760 and 1770)
Performed by Nana Mouskouri

Amazing grace! how sweet the sound
That sav'd a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears reliev'd;
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believ'd!

Thro' many dangers, toils and snares,
We have already come;
'Tis grace has brought us safe thus far,
And grace will lead us home.

Amazing grace! how sweet the sound
That sav'd a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

Poems

By sister initiate Vanessa, Germany (Originally in English)

Where Is My Home?

* The longing soul of a disciple *

When the rain begins to fall ... one drop, two drops, and many more...
The sunshine slowly disappears...
The birds begin chirping and fly back to their nest...
And "I" .... where is my place... where is my Home?

(I wrote this poem when I recognized that I don't belong to this world.
I have been reincarnated and reborn again and again as different beings.
Now I really have had enough of all these experiences of existence.)

Without You

Without Your compassion I would be blind forever...
Without Your wisdom I would be ignorant of eternity...
Without Your grace I would be never awakened...
and know my real Self...
Without You, Supreme Master Ching Hai
I'm nothing...

Since Knowing You

Since knowing You, my "True Self",
I can't love anything else more than You, my "true love".
In Your shining glory, I'm united with the peace
Of Your bright light of love.
Hearing Your lovely, sweet, soft voice,
My soul melts in the silence of Your grace.

Ode to Suma

By Convenient Method practitioner, Brother N. Guragain
(Originally in English)

You Smile so that the red rose smiles
You Smile so that the blue sky smiles
You smile so that snowy mountain Everest smiles
You smile so that the full moon smiles
Smile beloved Master, so that the Existence smiles
Smile Supreme Master, so that a smile smiles!

In Your eyes
Several times I have seen heaven
In Your infant face
Several times I have seen liberation
In Your Tongue
Several times I have heard love
Even though, I don't ask You for Salvation's height
Because that's a precise greed
Kneeling in front of You
Suma, I ask You for a kind sight.

You are mother of life
You are mother of peace
You are mother of art
And, You are mother of bliss.
Very far from death and birth
You are immortal on this Earth
You are whole and whole is Yours
Ocean is thirsty to drink Your choice
Breeze of spring is thirsty to take Your voice
Everyone is thirsty to listen You complete
But I am thirsty to touch Your feet!

A Perfect,Intelligently Designed
and Convenient Tent with Multiple- Functions

Camping in the countryside is a great way to enjoy nature, and since a tent is indispensable for life in the wilderness, Master has created an intelligently designed, multi-purpose camp shelter for personal use. It is so comfortable and lightweight that fellow practitioners earnestly asked that it be manufactured for the general public. Master is proud of this superb design, which has the following special features.

The tent can be set up in seconds with just a rope suspended from a tree limb or other horizontal structure. In no time at all, you have a shelter against rain and wind, and a place to rest. A single long rope can be used to suspend several tents, thus making for efficient use of space.
The spacious tent conveniently accommodates up to two people.
Inside the tent are several light, convenient, built-in pouches made of transparent material that lets you see its inner contents clearly, allowing for handy storage and retrieval of utensils.
Meditation tent: Remove the outer layer of the tent and you have a comfortable shelter for meditating in the open. The tent's base is waterproof, while its inner layer is made of finely woven netting that provides ventilation and protection against insects, and also serves as a stand-alone mosquito net.

The whole assembly is thin and lightweight, so that set-up takes very little time and effort. When dismantled, the tent can be neatly folded and placed in a small haversack, making it light and easy to carry, while still allowing enough room for books and other provisions.
When neatly folded, the outer layer of the tent may be used as a sitting cushion.

Its dome-shaped design makes the tent strong, durable, and resistant to deformation by the wind. Nightgowns, suits and other items can be hung from hangers tied inside the tent, so that clothing will not become wrinkled. Clothes can also be hung out to dry on hangers attached to the top of the dome.

The outer section of the tent is large enough to shelter both your luggage and cushion, and has two slit windows to facilitate ventilation. This layer can serve as a large poncho, allowing you to meditate in peace in the forest, even during a heavy downpour. The windows can also function as sleeve openings, so that your hands can stretch out and move freely, as if you are wearing a raincoat-cum-windbreaker. The length may be adjusted to your height with a drawstring, and if you are caught by a surprise shower while waiting for transport, you can just slip it on and shelter yourself and many others as well.

The outer layer of this multifunctional tent is made of a special fabric lined with a silver-metallic coating that is heat-resistant, waterproof and fireproof and also yields ultra-violet protection.
While luggage and cushions are stored inside the tent, shoes can be left outside in the protection of the outer layer without getting soaked by rain.
