She + He = Hes (as in Mess) Her + Him = Hirm (as in Firm) Hers + His = Hiers (as in Beers) Example: When God wants, Hes makes things happen according to Hiers will to suit Hirmself. This will consequently hinder your spiritual progress. It's not that God cares about what we eat, but if we poison our systems with intoxicating things or impure foods such as meat or animal products, then the cells of the body and the brain will also become contaminated and confused. And thus we will not be able to think clearly or sit calmly to find the source of happiness and wisdom. We have to sit calmly. In both our sitting and daily activities, we must practice to be calmer and to focus more inwardly, so that we can contact the real source of our Godlike quality. From there, we can take care of every daily problem and pain, and make life happier. If we confuse our cells, brain, blood, and sentimental condition, we will also be confused. Then we cannot think straight anymore. When we sit in meditation, we will become very restless and agitated. Even if we sit well in meditation, our vision will be clouded with negative influences from the poisonous things that we have taken into our body. So it's not that God cares what we eat or I care what you eat, or that if you eat a little meat you go straight to hell. It's not true. It's just that if we want to be Godlike, we must take care that everything we do and everything we eat is pure so that we will become pure also. Everything you eat here is purely vegetarian and very hygienic, because they use gloves and masks when cooking for you. Even if they carry some bacteria or cold virus, they will not impart it to you. But when you eat outside in other restaurants, of course, we cannot guarantee this. But you can recite the Holy Names to purify the food and offer it to God before you eat! This also minimizes a lot of infection for you. I also do not care what you eat, but whatever you eat will affect your meditation, spiritual practice, mood, temperament, personality and your thinking about value of life. Everything hangs on that also. As long as we are in the material world, every material thing affects us; that's why we must carefully eat pure food-the food that has less karmic burden and less suffering-for our sake. Because animals fear death and cling to life, they suffer a lot. If they are forced to die prematurely for us, of course, their fear and hatred are retained in the flesh that we eat. That's why we also become aggressive, agitated, discontented, and sometimes violent, just like how the animals feel before they die. Plants also have feelings, not really feelings, but reflex reactions, and not that much, either. Their lifespan also is not as long as that of animals. Their fear is not so intense. Besides, they can grow again. You can cut one branch of a tree and it will grow another two or three branches, sometimes. So if we cut some trees, it's all right, but plant three more. Or if we cut a branch, let it grow three more. It's okay. We don't worship nature. We use nature, but we also protect nature for our own sake. Human beings must always come first. Some very fanatic people say, "Okay, then we don't eat plants also, because they have life." I say, "Okay, then die." We don't worship fanaticism; we do everything in a middle way and very mild manner, just the same way we behave. Soul-elevating Seminar at Rutgers University [New Jersey] With the full assistance of New York fellow practitioners, initiates from New Jersey held a video seminar at Rutgers University on April 7, to share Master's teachings with the University's students and scholars. Several weeks before the seminar, fellow practitioners began making the necessary preparations, distributing flyers on campus and advertising in major newspapers and other media. On the day of the seminar, fellow practitioners exquisitely decorated the venue, giving it an air of solemnity and warmth. An exhibition area was set up to display Master's books, audiotapes, videotapes, and artistic creations. The videotapes that we shared with the audience that day included "Walk the Way of Love," which briefly introduces Master, and a recorded TV program entitled "A Journey through Aesthetic Realms." The excellent programs drew the focused attention of the audience. During the question and answer session that followed, many guests raised questions about Master and the Quan Yin Method, and the Quan Yin messenger answered them in an incisive and humorous way. Towards the end of the event, interested guests were invited to learn the Convenient Method, and many had very good experiences. Report from the Midwestern and Eastern USA Sharing Master's Teachings and Elevating Souls In the Spring of 2001, initiates and would-be initiates were overjoyed with the unexpected news that Master would send a Quan Yin messenger to centers throughout the Midwestern and Eastern USA. Master's blessings once again flowed from state to state-Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, North Carolina, Michigan, and back to Virginia again-as a total of five initiation sessions and eight video seminars were held. [Pennsylvania] On March 17, the Pennsylvania Center held a video seminar at the University of Pennsylvania International House in Philadelphia. Many enthusiastic citizens of the city braved bad weather to come to the seminar. After presenting Master's video lecture, we introduced the Quan Yin Method and the Convenient Method to the audience. Many guests showed great interest in Master's teachings and asked many relevant questions. The Quan Yin messenger answered each of the questions, and then imparted the Convenient Method. Thanks to the earnest assistance of fellow initiates, this Truth-sharing activity was accomplished successfully. Caption(sp14-1): Video seminar in Pennsylvania [Ohio] In Ohio, several Truth-aspirants were longing to receive initiation but had life situations that prevented them from traveling. Then, Master mercifully sent a Quan Yin messenger to the door of their center! On March 4, the day of the initiation, the Ohio Center became filled to capacity with people and God's power, as initiates and would-be initiates arrived from many locations in Ohio and neighboring states. After initiation, the new initiates were immediately transformed, becoming happier and more relaxed. While the Quan Yin messenger was in Ohio, we were able to hold group meditation sessions twice a day all week. During this time, many initiates said they learned to put down their worldly obligations to attend group meditation, because through group meditation, our lives become smoother and more meaningful. [Indiana] Three video seminars were scheduled in Indiana. The night of the first seminar, one woman who came decided she was not interested right then, so she thanked us politely and left. What a surprise it was to see her again at the next seminar! She said that Master's transformation body had appeared to her at home and that she felt she had to come back. Not only did this lady attend the second video seminar, but she came to the third one as well, where she applied to learn the Convenient Method. Since that time, she has been a regular visitor to the Indiana Center, attending nearly all of the Convenient Method group meditation sessions. [Missouri] On Easter weekend in April 2001, the Missouri Center joyfully received a Quan Yin messenger and fellow practitioners from throughout the Midwest for an initiation and video seminar in Rolla. For local and visiting disciples from other states, work and play blurred together as they happily prepared for the event. Thanks to Master's love and bounteous blessings, many new members joined the Quan Yin family after the seminar, and many more people now attend group meditation. [North Carolina] After initiates from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Ohio helped with preparations, the North Carolina video seminar took place in Chapel Hill. We were touched by the sincerity and commitment of the attendees, as more than 70 percent registered to learn the Convenient Method. One woman who learned the Convenient Method had brought her three young children, all of whom were quiet and watched attentively throughout the entire video. Another woman told us that she had learned about the seminar after being led by the Holy Spirit. Caption(sp14-2): Initiates from North Carolina and other states celebrate the success of their video seminar. [Michigan] On April 28, the Southeast Michigan Center conducted a video seminar in the main library of downtown Ann Arbor. Brothers and sisters from out of town and out of state came to help in preparing for the seminar, which greatly encouraged us. Several guests expressed their delight at being able to attend the seminar and they hoped that similar activities would be held in the future. A Russian couple who had already learned the Convenient Method came to the seminar, and both have been attending the Center's Convenient Method group meditation session each Sunday since. The wife is sincerely waiting for initiation, and the husband is now a full vegetarian At the seminar, they acquired a large quantity of Master's videotapes, and afterwards spent hours with us, enjoying Master's blessings and love. The love in our Quan Yin family truly goes beyond all races and nationalities! While the Quan Yin messenger was in Michigan, we also held a two-day retreat, which left everyone satisfied and happy. At the end of the retreat, each of us was purified and cleansed and our hearts were filled with Master's Love. Now, the Center is open for four sessions of group meditation each week! [Virginia] On Saturday, May 5, and Sunday, May 6, the Virginia and Maryland Centers joined together to hold an initiation and then a video seminar. Several people were eager to learn more about Master's teachings, and registered to learn the Convenient Method. The concerted effort of the working initiates made possible this great and uplifting event, which was filled with sincere people in an atmosphere of love and joy, and provided an exciting and jubilant gathering of fellow practitioners. Caption(sp14-3): Video seminar in Virginia, USA Report from Argentina Teachings of Bliss [Buenos Aires] During the cool and refreshing autumn season in the southern hemisphere, fellow practitioners in Buenos Aires held a video seminar again to satisfy the spiritual longing of their Truth-aspiring compatriots. Through the concerted and earnest efforts of a Quan Yin messenger and fellow practitioners from various South American countries, including Brazil and Chile, the preparation work was accomplished smoothly. The seminar was held at the famous Saint Martin Cultural Center, and attracted more than 250 people. The local community's aspiration for the Truth was reflected in the fact that some guests had to sit on the floor and stand at the back of the venue during the event. After presenting one of Master's videotaped lectures full of wisdom and spiritual revelations, the Quan Yin messenger taught the guests the Convenient Method. The meditation session was followed by a question-and-answer session. As everyone was overwhelmed with bliss and wanted very much to share their inner joy, the Q&A session turned into a relaxed and casual gathering of good friends. Many people revealed that they had seen the inner Light. One woman said that the night before she had dreamt of the Quan Yin messenger inviting her to the seminar, while a gentleman testified that it was the best meditation he had ever experienced in his life! The seminar ended later than scheduled, as each guest left filled with joy and hope, and fully charged with Master's love. Caption(sp3-1): Argentine fellow practitioners hold a video seminar again to meet the earnest demands of their Truth-aspiring compatriots. Truth-sharing in Parana [Parana] A woman practitioner of a healing method in Parana city by chance came across the Quan Yin Web page on the Internet and was immediately captivated by Master's teachings. Wishing to know more about the Quan Yin Method, she promptly contacted the Buenos Aires Center. Local fellow practitioners and a Quan Yin messenger thus took the opportunity to hold a soul-elevating seminar in Parana. This woman generously offered her residence as the venue for the seminar, and helped fellow practitioners publish news about the event in the local newspapers. On the day of the seminar, her home was fully packed by a huge audience, many members of which nodded in agreement with Master's teachings during the video lecture. Later, many people wanted to learn the Convenient Method. One of the ladies could not wait and requested initiation into the Quan Yin Method. After the seminar, the hostess agreed to host regular group meditation sessions for the new Convenient Method practitioners. Therefore, we provided many of Master's video and audio tapes in order to share Her teachings with the brothers and sisters of Parana. Report from France A Divine Easter Retreat [Paris] During the Easter weekend, fellow initiates in Paris organized a two-day retreat, which was also attended by initiates from other cities in France and Belgium. When we arrived at the Paris Center, we immediately sensed its tranquil atmosphere. It was a bright, sunny day, as sunlight warmed every corner of the Center. The few white clouds in the azure sky above gave a feeling of peace and harmony. Although the retreat was held on a small scale due to limited space, its schedule was planned like an international retreat. We meditated from 4 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., with video lecture sessions and breaks for meals. During the retreat, we felt Master's blessings, and by watching Her enlightening videotaped lectures, grew stronger on the spiritual path and learned proper concepts of practice. Everyone was full of joy and happiness during the retreat, and recharged with love from Master, we said goodbye to each other at the end. Thank You, Master, for Your perfect arrangement of a fruitful retreat at the Paris Center, which allowed us to grow closer together as we experienced the depth of your compassion and care. Report from South Africa Sharing at the Art of Living Festival [Cape Town] The Cape Town Center again shared Master's teachings and promoted vegetarianism at the "Art Of Living Festival," an annual local event for promoting alternative lifestyles. Previously at this event, we had the use of a lecture room, which enabled us to show Master's video lectures, distribute booklets and magazines, and serve vegetarian snacks in a private and tranquil atmosphere. This year, however, due to a change in venue, all stands were positioned side-by-side in corridors, which gave us the opportunity to share Master's teachings and work through personal contact. Thus, many more people came to know of Master than in previous years, and all left deeply impressed. A great deal of interest in vegetarianism was shown as well, which was most encouraging. We offered sweet and savory snacks to visitors, and many stood in absolute amazement after learning that the cakes had been baked without eggs, and that the savory snacks had been prepared with soy-based products and not "real meat." Many husbands who tasted our snacks returned later with their wives in tow, in order to learn how to prepare vegetarian food. Through the Loving Guidance of our Master, we had a meaningful time at the Art of Living Festival this year, and did our best to introduce Master's work. Report from Malaysia The Waterfall Retreat [Kota Tinggi] It had been some time since the last international retreat and everyone here was eagerly longing to attend one. So it came as a pleasant surprise when Master gave us a change to recharge spiritually and approved a three-day retreat, to be held at Kota Tinggi Waterfall Resort, Malaysia, located near Singapore, to be attended by initiates from Singapore and Malaysia-specially, Penang, Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, and Sarawak. Upon their arrival, initiates were greeted by the splashing and soothing sound of a waterfall, under which they prayed for world peace and continued harmony between the two neighboring countries. At the late morning meditation session, young initiates were allowed to sit with older initiates. And during the lunch break, many participants flocked to catch the breathtaking view of the waterfall and cool off from the heat. During an afternoon video session, they learned much from a video of Master giving tips on how to improve meditation practice. The midday sun was shining in all its glory outside the meditation hall, but Master's gentle voice uplifted our spirits and shielded us from the scorching heat. The kitchen staff lovingly prepared sumptuous food, as well as herbal soup to dispel the heat of the summer sun. Then, Mother Nature gave her own answer to the radiating heat by bestowing a late afternoon shower! Good things always seem to be especially evanescent, and the final day of the retreat soon arrived. Looks of regret appeared on participants' faces over the retreat's impending conclusion, but there was widespread anticipation of the bliss to be derived from the final meditation session ahead. When the retreat officially ended, everyone gave a spontaneous round of loud applause for a most blissful retreat. Even the rainbow that appeared just after the retreat ended seemed to say, "Thank You, Master, for everything!" Caption(sp6-1): The enthralling waterfall greeted initiates as they arrived at the Kota Tinggi retreat. Caption(sp6-2):Time to go to the meditation hall! Caption(sp6-3):A beautiful rainbow appears right after the retreat. Report from Formosa Disaster Relief and Community Emergency Training Program [Taipei] On May 19 and 20, 2001, approximately 85 Formosan initiates, including contact persons and team workers, participated in a basic and intermediate program in Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) and Community Emergency Resources Training (CERT), at the National Taiwan University medical school. Of the participants in the program, many were medical professionals, while others came from all walks of life, but more than half were fellow initiates. Everyone took part in the program in a spirit of compassion and cooperation, expecting to offer their services in times of need. The excellent team of instructors included doctors, nurses, and scholars and experts from related fields, who specialize in specific areas of expertise, are experienced in practice, and were willing to contribute their time and abilities to training the participants. The two-day basic program was rich in content, with the instructors maintaining a great sense of humor, and team practice keeping the participants in high spirits. Initiates took the initiative to raise questions and master the various skills taught. In the intermediate program, a psychological reconstruction session for those suffering from stress syndromes and a disaster simulation were presented, with an emphasis on practicing techniques in real-life situations. What a Coincidence--SUMA! The first day of the basic program included a lesson in Supply Management Systems, abbreviated "SUMA", which caused laughter among the initiates. The instructor did not understand the reason for their laughter but guessed that this was the name of a well-known person! The lesson proceeded smoothly with Master's omnipresent love blessing each initiate. Inauguration of the Changhua Center [Changhua] Over the past few years, fellow practitioners in Changhua, central Formosa, have been renting a venue for group meditation. But recently, thanks to Master's blessings, the Changhua fellow practitioners have finally secured a "home" that they can call their own. On April 29, a grand ceremony was held to mark the opening of the new Chunghua Center. About seven hundred fellow practitioners and guests from around Formosa participated in this festive occasion. The new meditation center is in the serene rural area of Changhua, its location more than compensating for its small size, as green rice paddies meet the eye everywhere one looks. All the construction work and interior decorations were accomplished by fellow practitioners, whose dedicated endeavors were reflected in the completed facilities-a meditation hall, a kitchen, a children's playhouse, and a park with a beautiful lawn. Enhanced by the tranquil and leisurely atmosphere of the surrounding countryside, the Center is indeed a paradise for spiritual practitioners. The celebrations began with a solemn inauguration ceremony, followed by a joyous program including dancing, singing, and a fashion show, to express gratitude for God's grace. On stage, the beautiful singing, exotic ethnic dance, and vibrant modern dance favored by young people amply demonstrated the jubilance and enthusiasm of these modern spiritual practitioners. The elegant publication corner, exhibition area for Celestial Clothes and Jewelry, and children's amusement section all resounded with joyful laughter during the event as crowds filled the Center with a warm and cheery atmosphere. Next to the kitchen was the canteen area, where delicious vegetarian food was served to fellow practitioners and guests throughout the day. The celebrations reached a climax with the "Happy Yogi 2001 Spring/Summer collections debut show" right after lunch. Although it lasted only fifteen minutes, the natural and lively fashion show presented by dozens of fellow practitioners uplifted everyone with the bliss and romance of the Happy Yogi clothing. The program was followed by a video seminar conducted by a Quan Yin messenger, who shared Master's teachings and taught the Convenient Method. Thus, the inaugural event ended on a sublimely successful note. As the curtain fell on the day's activities; the Center reassumed its usual atmosphere of solemn tranquility. But one thing that will never stop is God's blessing, which incessantly permeates the small yet beautiful Changhua Center. Caption(sp2-1):The Changhua Center is surrounded by green rice paddies on all sides. Caption(sp2-2):Contact persons and fellow practitioners from all parts of Formosa join in the celebrations. Back to contents ================================================================== Spiritual Interludes A Good Example By a fellow initiate from Xinjiang, Mainland China Once a group of fellow practitioners rented a car to go out for a picnic. It was early in the morning and it took about two hours of driving on a mountain road to get to the destination. When the group got there, an elderly sister silently took out a share of the breakfast that she had prepared for the driver. The driver was very touched and so was I. Her care and consideration expressed the love of a spiritual practitioner in a natural way. I believe Master taught me a lesson of care and love through this sister. It reminds all of us to convey God's love to people in need whenever possible. A Goose That Sacrificed Himself to Save Another I accidentally discovered a rule against eating goose-meat in my colleague's family. After a curious inquiry, I learned that a big white goose raised by the family once saved the life of one of his forefathers. During a heavy hail storm, the goose pushed the forefather down with his wings and covered him with his body to protect him, only to be killed by the hailstones himself. The forefather set down this rule against goose-meat eating in the family in order to show his gratitude for the sacrificial act of the white goose. The Magic "Facial Cream" By sister initiate Josiane, Mauritius (Originally in English) During their free time, X and Y, two colleagues and practitioners of the Convenient Method and Quan Yin Method respectively, often share their thoughts about Master's incredible power and sublimity. One day, the following conversation took place. X: Hey, do you know what our colleague Mr. A asked me the other day? He asked whether I was using any facial cream because he noticed that my face had changed and looks brighter. Y: What did you say? X: Oh, I told him that I used nothing, but he didn't believe me. Y: Of course, he wouldn't! You should have told him you were using a light cream called "CM". And if you find it satisfactory, you will also use another cream called "QM". It is reputed to be very, very effective if used diligently, and is manufactured under world-renowned license from Supreme Master Ching Hai. X: Well, I never thought of that! Initiate Y always encourages X to practice the Convenient Method diligently so that her life will be smoother. Hence, X follows the advice and practices not only diligently but also with lots and lots of love. After some time, she has realized how powerful Master really is, and cannot believe it herself! When she requests help, Master responds spontaneously. Her life becomes smoother and calmer. Besides Mr. A, other colleagues have also noticed many positive changes in X. She is more understanding and tolerant, and faces problems more calmly. At home, her husband is most surprised by her sudden positive changes and even encourages her to pursue spiritual practice! Put briefly, she accepts everything as Master's arrangement. Master is right. She always reminds us that even with the Convenient Method, our life will get better and better if we practice diligently and follow Her instructions strictly. Back to contents ================================================================== Pearls of Wisdom A Grand Vision Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Hsihu, Formosa, April 10, 1992 (Originally in English) The more we develop this world, the more Heavens there will be. We will create a new Heaven. It is just like when we go to a very deserted land with no water or trees, and we begin to dig wells, and we plant trees, vegetables, etc. We make a useless wasteland become a fertile, green, beautiful place. Then we create a new park, a new garden or new living quarters that otherwise had not been there. It did not exist before we came. And from a lousy place, with all kinds of shrubs and thorny bushes growing all over, we make living quarters, a small paradise. That's how we better the world. Similarly, we will do it on a greater or larger scale. As we move along spiritually, we will move along in helping the world, in beautifying the environment and helping with the poor and the needy. We have to help the whole world, not only one nation. And that is our vision of the future. Purify Yourself, and Benefit the World Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Singapore, September 26, 1994 (Originally in English) Every corner of the Earth affects the whole planet. You know it very well, because recently the fire in Indonesia affected the whole of Singapore, Malaysia and the neighboring countries. So actually, from this kind of natural lesson, we can tell that one person or one place on this planet affects another part of our planet. Therefore, if you, yourself-your heart, your mind, your speech and your actions-are pure, how beneficial can it be to this planet? This is very logical; we have no need to argue or demonstrate. Vegetarianism and Environmental Protection Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Hawaii, U.S.A., September 3, 1994 (Originally in English) We deplete the Earth because we raise cattle and animals. Actually, this is another way we can contribute to our planet. You know all this; you read more books than I ever can imagine-about vegetarianism, about how to save our world, about environmental love and all kinds of things. And the vegetarian diet is the answer to all of these questions. Our earth is collapsing because we eat too much meat. Actually, we have to put it that way. Roughly speaking, it's like that. You read the newspapers more than I do; you watch television more than I ever do. I don't watch television. But you know that every minute, every year, we cut down forests as big as England just to raise animals. So how many rain forests have been destroyed? This changes the atmosphere and changes the rain. That's why our planet is heating up, and many places are having problems with floods and drought for long periods, even in America. So if we want to save the planet, if we want to preach environmental care, we should be vegetarian. There's no other thing to do. And that is just a small thing compared to all the vaccinations and all the pure water used for meat and things like that. You know better than I do. I don't want to preach to you about the things that you already read in newspapers and magazines and watch on television every day. I am just reminding you of a small portion of it. But the harmful effects of the meat diet are larger than life, not only that-to so many things, and harmful to ourselves. The Way to Rejuvenation Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai during a seven-day retreat in Hsihu, Formosa, May 5-12, 1991 (Originally in Chinese) By practicing the Quan Yin Method, we change our spiritual condition, concepts and wisdom, and also our bodily organs and cells, which become refreshed and purged of toxins. If we have no time to meditate, these changes will not take place. If we are busy working hard for the multitude, or when we are too exhausted, these changes are not discernible. Otherwise, each time we meditate, all our cells are renewed; therefore, we say ?return to childhood?. We become younger not only in mentality, but in body as well. We feel healthier, our body becomes more supple, and our skin more tender. As all toxic substances are eliminated, we look better and better each day. Except for the Quan Yin Method, I have not noticed any other method that can bring about changes that are so fast and marvelous. As you all know, there are many forms of exercises and tonics in society that claim to make people younger. However, the results have been unimpressive; even the people selling the tonics grow older themselves. (Master and everyone laugh) They also do not look pretty. Right? (Yes) Back to contents ================================================================== An Ode to May Dedicated to the Dear Merciful Mother of our Souls Travelling on the way Home, We are a group of blessed and happy children. Your sweet and gentle voice Soothes our anxious and helpless souls. Your warm compassionate radiance Illuminates the darkness in our lives. Like crystalline water, Your eyes Cleanse our exhaustion and sorrow. Nourished by Your divine Love, Nectar constantly waters the garden in our hearts. With Your loving irrigation, Oases emerge in the desert of our lives. Our long journey will soon end, When we will throw ourselves into Mother's eternal, warm embrace. attachment(fr2-1) Combined Reports Forward: To celebrate this warm thanksgiving of Mother's Day, fellow initiates from around the world sent greeting cards and letters to our most beloved Master. Master responded to their sincerity and love by personally writing back to each of them. Local centers also held celebration activities to express their gratitude and longing for our compassionate Mother-Master. [Formosa] Hsihu's regular two-day retreat in May fell on Mother's Day, which was also the birthday of our dearest Master. Fellow practitioners from around Formosa and their relatives and friends gathered to celebrate this meaningful occasion and present their best wishes to Mother-Master. Exquisitely decorated by fellow initiates, the Hsihu Center took on a beautiful look! Colorful balloons, ribbons, and balls on the trees swayed in the wind. The retreat's entertainment program began in the afternoon, featuring a fashion show of the latest spring and summer designs from the Happy Yogi collection; solo performances on the piano, flute and Chinese zither; contemporary dance; frontier dance; interactive singing; and street dance presented by teenage initiates. The choral and solo singing of original songs, performed by initiates from Taipei and Kaoping, praised the greatness of our compassionate Mother-Master and invoked tears of longing among many fellow initiates. attachment(fr2-2,3,4,5) [Hong Kong] In early May, fellow initiates in Hong Kong began preparing to celebrate Master's birthday and Mother's Day with great sincerity. We initiated the group-signing of a greeting card so that it could reach Master in time. On Mother's Day, celebrations were held at the Tian Shan Center, where we had designed some contests related to retreat matters. The contests were both fun and exciting, bringing much joy to the initiates, and also reminding us of the wonderful moments we had in retreats and group meditation sessions. A small choir-the Happy Angels Chorus-recently formed by fellow initiates in Hong Kong, performed many beautiful songs with a guitar accompaniment. The greatest surprise was receiving Master's hand-written reply to the greeting card from Hong Kong initiates. Her kind and sweet words of blessing evoked sweet memories of the wonderful days we have spent together with Master in the past. attachment(fr2-6,7) [Japan] When carnations were in full bloom to add more color to Mother's Day around the world, fellow practitioners of the Tokyo Center held a birthday celebration entitled "Mother of the Great Earth", after their regular group meditation session. They praised the great love of Master with their singing, which also expressed their utmost gratitude to our merciful Master for physically gracing this secular world, in Her endeavor to deliver sentient beings back to the other shore. Fellow practitioners brought with them lots of prepared food to be shared with everyone, and all were extremely satisfied in body, mind, and spirit. [Korea] Fellow initiates from Seoul celebrated Master's birthday with a program featuring poetry recitation, singing, a Korean flute solo, a puzzle game, and rhythmic storytelling to the accompaniment of clapping. After the show, everyone sang the song "Master's Blessing" to express their gratitude for Master's love and blessing. The celebrations concluded when all initiates stood before a large photo of Master to sing Happy Birthday and cut the birthday cake. attachment(fr2-8) [Malaysia and Singapore] Fellow practitioners from Singapore and the Malaysian cities of Penang, Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, and Sarawak recently held a joint three-day retreat in a waterfall resort in Malaysia to pray for world peace and continued harmony between the two neighboring countries. The retreat ended on Mother's Day, which was also Master's birthday. Liaison Practitioners from both countries cut the vegetarian birthday cake made to celebrate the occasion, and to symbolize the harmonious and co-operative spirit among human beings. Fellow initiates also greatly enjoyed the program that followed. attachment (fr2-9) [Indonesia] During the two-day holiday of Mother's Day, the Jakarta Center prepared a series of activities. On Saturday, we first visited some destitute families, bringing them rice and vegetarian food. We also visited inhabitants of urban slum areas, where we planned to build simple public toilets to help improve local sanitary conditions. On Sunday, celebrations were held at the Center. The program included a drawing contest for young initiates, a tai chi chuan (a Chinese Martial Art) performance, a children's chorus, and an interactive quiz. The program ended with a poetry recital and a sincere prayer for our beloved Master's good health and everlasting happiness. Another climax was reached after lunch, as a group of fellow brothers participated in a cooking contest! Although they were used to daily office work, they could also cook special cuisine, perhaps a little clumsily, as onlookers cheered them on. This series of activities ended successfully amid joy and laughter. attachment(fr2-10,11,12) [Florida, U.S.A.] As part of the special events taking place around the world at various centers, fellow initiates from cities in Florida and the neighboring state of Georgia joyfully gathered at a place in the serene countryside of central Florida for a two-day retreat to celebrate the birthday of our beloved Master. After the retreat, initiates enjoyed participating in a specially scheduled performance program. The excitement was then replaced by a touching moment when everyone sang Hallelujah, while silently praying for world peace and our Master's wellbeing. The following cake-cutting ceremony was full of fun and joy, helping to wrap up the retreat in a great spirit that will forever live in our hearts. attachment(fr2-13,14) [New Jersey, U.S.A.] On May 12-13, over 250 fellow initiates from over 10 states joined the New Jersey Center's two-day Mother's Day retreat. Fellow initiates meditated at the Center's new Meditation Hall in the forest to enjoy Master's divine love and harmonize with nature. On the afternoon of the first day, a thunderstorm passed by and brought a timely end to the drought problem that the New Jersey area had been experiencing over the previous three weeks. The rain also gave us a cooling breeze in the hot weather. The retreat ended at noon the next day, and then fellow practitioners, together with their relatives and friends, conveyed their best wishes to Master through various entertainment programs. After the performances, a garden party featuring delicious vegetarian food, which had been long awaited by many, finally began. All participating fellow initiates thanked Master for reminding us of our Inner Wisdom through the retreat, and letting us share the joy of spiritual growth with other members of the Quan Yin family. attachment (fr2-15,16,17) Letter from the Geneva Center (Originally in English) Dearest Master, We wish You a very happy birthday and Mother's Day and many more to come! It is strange not to be with You on an international retreat to celebrate Your birthday, as we have been so many times in the past (and to tell You the truth, most of us were hoping till the last moment that there would be a retreat!) But we also understand that after the many lecture tours and retreats of 1999 and 2000 You felt like having a well-deserved rest, and also that you would like us to become more independent and not just to live from one retreat to the next (although that was really nice!) We are trying to grow up, to become more useful to you, but please be patient and continue to help us make progress. Even if it is a long time since we last saw You, You are with us all the time, You are in our hearts and we often feel You are very close by. It is a wonderful feeling. Thank You for helping us so much, for looking after all of us, for being there for all of us all the time. Thank You for coming to this planet to show us the way Home. Thank You for all Your understanding, for Your compassion and for all Your love! Happy birthday, dearest Big Sister! May I have your consent?" The boss replied, "But have you been to see my wife and talk to her?" The man said, "Yes, I have! But I like your daughter better." Fond but Forgetful Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Florida, U. S. A., October 4, 1999 (Originally in English) Bernard was invited to his friend Ruben's home for dinner. Ruben, the host, made all the arrangements and requested his wife to prepare dinner and make Bernard feel at home. But he always used endearing terms like sweetheart, sugar plum, apple pie, honey pie, honey dew, morning rose, and pumpkin pie to call his wife whenever he requested something or talked to her. Bernard was very, very impressed. He said: "Oh, my God, you are really, really sweet. After all these years of marriage, you still call her all these sweet names. You must have a very happy marriage. I am glad for you." Ruben said, "Shh, don't speak so loudly. I began to forget her name three years ago." Making It Heavier Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Florida, U. S. A., October 4, 1999 (Originally in English) A new clerk was sent to the post office by his boss to mail a big envelope. When he reached the window, the woman behind the counter put the envelope on the scales, weighed it and said, "This is too heavy. You don't have enough stamps on the envelope. You need more stamps." The clerk scolded and screamed at her: "You idiot, that will make it heavier, won't it?" Although this progress has brought convenience into our lives and a high degree of economic development, it has cost the Earth dearly. The beautiful natural environment has been devastated by pollution, and the limited resources of our planet are almost depleted due to unrestrained exploitation by humankind. Master once said to us, "This Earth is really beautiful! I don't want her to be destroyed so quickly. People in this world spent a lot of money going to the moon, but they spend very little on taking care of the Earth. This is not right!" Although we are only visitors on this planet, we ought to think about future generations and all the other sentient beings living here. Each one of us is obliged to love and care for this beautiful Earth. In addition to encouraging us to practice diligently and protect the Earth, Master has, since the early years of Her preaching, consistently taught fellow practitioners how to save energy and preserve the natural environment in daily life. Master's forward-looking concepts have been more penetrating and thorough than the environmental protection ideals advocated by scholars and experts. Even before the world became widely aware of today's drastic ecological and climatic changes, Master had already warned humankind and offered practical solutions to these serious problems: vegetarianism and reforestation. (Please refer to Master's 1994 discourse in Japan: "The Way to Save the World from Doomsday".) Such general knowledge and concepts may not be profound theories, but they are absolutely feasible and effective. Through Master's words and actions, we witness and learn a scripture that is very much alive with the wisdom of an Enlightened Master. Cherishing the Earth's Precious Resources Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai at the Shatin Center, Hong Kong, September 11, 1993 (Originally in Chinese) Our planet is suffering from severe devastation in this age, as trees are cut down and mountain forests destroyed indiscriminately. Many beautiful places have been ruined and reduced to deserts. New deserts are emerging every year. Take a look at the statistics and you will know. Consequently, the Earth's climate has changed drastically. It has become peculiar with the occurrence of many typhoons and earthquakes, and sharp fluctuations in temperature. Mercury readings soar high in places with normally cold climates and plunge low in places with warm climates. Our bodies can hardly adapt to the changes. For instance, we may be accustomed to living in Hong Kong, where the weather turns cool in September and October, and becomes really cold in November and December. Our bodies have already adapted to these annual variations, and a sudden change brings physical discomfort. We may become ill and have lots of trouble. Caring for Nature Human beings have enormous destructive power. They care little about society or the future, and are concerned only about their immediate personal benefit. Therefore, a considerable part of the Earth's resources have been destroyed, which in turn has affected the world economy. Should a torrential downpour occur where no effort has been made to conserve soil and water, there will be no trees to absorb the rain permeating the soil, and it is later released slowly like a river. The result is a flood disaster. When floods occur, many houses are destroyed, crops are submerged in water, and the global economy suffers. Recent floods in the United States have incurred losses totaling billions of dollars, and the U.S. has yet to completely recover from these disasters. This is all caused by humankind's destruction of the environment. If every group, unit, and individual can act like our group and care lovingly for Mother Nature the way I teach you, then our world will be different. We may think that only communist or extremist countries wage wars that destroy our planet and jeopardize human lives. But in reality, they are not the only ones; even small groups, small units, or individuals can destroy the Earth. They do it bit by bit every day. This is chronic destruction. War causes one-time damage, and the aftereffects disappear in a few decades. When people realize that war brings no benefits, they call for a cease-fire and begin reconstruction and restoration efforts. However, the chronic destruction that goes on daily throughout the world is difficult to restore. It causes damage and creates risks that are no less than those caused by war. I do not teach you these things because of money. For example, sometimes I teach you how to pick fruit, take care of trees, and spray unhealthy trees. Trees become sick sometimes. Worms grow inside and devour them, then the trees fall. Therefore, you must take care of the trees when you have time. Those who know how to do it should teach those who do not. Work together. Each one of you can tender a few trees. And when fruit grows, we can pick it. Implications of Spiritual Acts Every action by a spiritual practitioner carries symbolic significance. When we act with the intent to preserve, this power of loving concern will spread from our corner of the world to the whole planet. The Earth will be conserved, crops will be protected, the global economy will be sustained, and everyone will have food to eat. The world will have adequate resources and sufficient food for everyone. We do not do this so we can save a lot of money; in fact, little can be saved in this way. It is merely a symbolic action. Having the spirit to conserve and the heart to contribute demonstrates the power of conservation and positive strength that we want to share with the world. If this power of conservation pervades every corner of the globe, the world will be much safer. When everyone is engaged in destruction and no one makes any effort at conservation, of course, the positive power will diminish until no protective power is left and only the negative, destructive power prevails. Therefore, we must try to maintain a balance. We may be few in number, but our power is great. We spiritual practitioners can focus our minds to such an extent that even though we are doing only a little bit, the outcome is comparatively more significant and the impact greater than our efforts. Therefore, do not say, "Well, it is merely a few acres of land. How much benefit can we bring to the world? Why should Master take all this trouble?" When each person does a little bit, the combined effort is enormous. In the world outside, everyone causes a little bit of damage. All actions should begin from individuals. Therefore, when you do a positive deed, bear in mind that you are doing it for a symbolic purpose. When we do it, our protective power can offset the destructive force in the world. Even though we cannot completely compensate for past actions, at least we can try to maintain a balance. Otherwise, if everyone is being destructive and no one is committed to conservation, the world will become a desert sooner or later. Now there is less and less forested land; the same is happening here around us. All the surrounding mountains have become bald like a monk's head. Therefore, we must balance it a bit symbolically. If we had not preserved the forests here, this place would have become barren. Do you think it would have looked nice? Fortunately, we still have some green and richly forested areas here. In the summertime, you can sit under the trees to read, meditate, cool off, chat, rest, or lie in hammocks. Had we not taken good care of this place, the trees would have become sick, withered, and finally died. The whole place would have become as bare as the mountains over there. How would you have felt then? Wouldn't it have been a lot worse than it is now? Jeopardizing Both the Earth and Humankind If the natural environment is slightly destroyed and humankind adds to the damage without anyone taking care of Mother Nature, our planet Earth will one day become like Mars. Do you know about Mars? Why is it called Mars (the Chinese term for Mars is "Fire Plane")? It is because there is only fire up there and the planet is red. There is no life, at least not on its surface. I "hear" that there is life underground, however. This is because the planet suffered severe devastation in the past, and there was a war with other beings. Although they battled only because they had no other alternative, the karma remains. They killed each other with chemical bombs, which made the planet barren. Besides, humans cannot live there because the surrounding atmosphere is still highly toxic. The non-toxic atmosphere of our planet Earth contains oxygen; therefore, we can live. But perhaps our oxygen is not pure, so we cannot live long and our life force is weak; we cannot enjoy a long life. On Mars, or other more dangerous or worn-out planets, the atmosphere is in even worse condition. Pervaded only by toxic gases and no oxygen, it allows no life to survive. Today, the humans on Earth have enormous destructive power and have created plenty of toxic gases. For the sake of money, people give no thought to the future, or about the people around them, not even their own children or future generations. Therefore, the air on Earth is becoming increasingly toxic, and people are afflicted by more illnesses. It is difficult to cure their illnesses because their immunity is growing weaker. Cherishing God's Grace Trees generate oxygen to maintain a balance in the air in our environment. Without them, the Earth will have only floods and fires; it will be hot and dry like a desert; the atmosphere will become unbalanced. This is because trees absorb carbon dioxide for circulation and transformation, and release oxygen that is beneficial to our bodies. If we look at green plants frequently, our eyes will feel relaxed, we will feel good, and our bodies will feel very comfortable. Therefore, trees are vital to human beings. When we take care of them, we also take care of ourselves. This has nothing to do with money. This is symbolic conservation of Nature. We do not worship Nature; we preserve it. Sometimes, we have to cut trees for a greater purpose or out of genuine necessity. But when we don't have a reason to do so, we should preserve them all. It is a symbolic action. We do not do it for money, nor is it because I am fastidious that I trouble you. You may think that it is not worthwhile, because you can buy a lot with a few dollars, but the meaning is different. Everyone wants to buy and no one wants to plant. Since God has bestowed the great Nature on us, we ought to take good care of it to show that we cherish what Hes has given us. And Hes will give us more. For instance, parents give some money to their child, and the child manages and runs a business well. As his business prospers and expands, the parents trust him more and are happy to give him more wealth. Then, he will prosper even more. If the child squanders, wastes, or loses the money, will his parents give him more? Of course not! This is very simple and logical. Therefore, when we possess anything that we think is good, we ought to cherish it, take care of it, and make it even better. Since we spiritual practitioners have great power, we create a more tremendous impact doing the same thing that non-practitioners do. It is because we do it with focused attention and love, which is very much different than the way people outside do it-inattentively or for money. We thus have greater influential power that brings greater benefit to the world. Therefore, bear in mind your own power when you do anything. Otherwise, spiritual practitioners are no different than non-spiritual practitioners. Then why should you practice spiritually and expend so much effort? Do you feel that you have improved when you go to group meditation? If you are truly sincere, you will feel yourself improving, and you will make progress. Related Topics: Features on Environmental Protection -- Economizing to Avoid Running Short Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Hsihu, Formosa, September 1991 (Originally in Chinese) I always consider the economic situation and circumstances of each country I visit. I do not ignore these aspects just because I am wealthy. Of course, I have enough money to install hundreds of heaters and air-conditioners, but my house has no air-conditioning. When we were building the old wooden hut in Hsihu, a resident disciple kept persuading me to install an air-conditioner, but I refused. I didn't want one because no one else had one. A little heat cannot kill us; it is coldness that is dreadful. Coldness consumes our energy and makes us tremble all the time. As a result, we cannot concentrate on our work, and that makes a difference. Occasionally, I turn on the electric heater when my physical condition demands it. For instance, when it is cold during the night, I turn on the heater for a while, and then switch it off; I don't keep it on the whole day. Besides, I always choose one that consumes the least electricity. They bought some 400-watt heaters for me, but I dare not use them because I don't think they are necessary. For me alone, 300 watts is more than enough, and I use it only because I can't find a heater with a lower power consumption rating. Each time they buy an electric appliance, I always check the wattage. Here I have become an electric power expert. Whenever we buy any electric appliance, I always check the required wattage first. Today, they brought me three heaters from abroad, and the first thing I checked was the wattage. A resident disciple assured me that the consumption would not be high, but I insisted: "It definitely will be high! I know the electrical appliances made in that country require high wattage." Indeed I was right. I found that they were all 1,500- and 1,000-watt units. I said, "Return them; I am not using them." I dare not use even 400-watt units, not to mention those consuming 1,000 watts or more! I can make a fire with timber. The only exception is when it is too cold at night, or when I fall ill. My body cannot stand the cold, and to preserve this body for serving everyone, I have to use it for a while. Otherwise, I rarely use it. Whatever I teach you, I really practice myself. Please cut down on power consumption, otherwise, it won't last long. The first ones to suffer will be us. Don't use it as lavishly as you can, and think that it is good for us; it might not be! We have an idiom in Au Lac that says, "Eat less and you will have enough food for a long time." My grandma taught me this, which means if we eat all the food today, we will have no food for tomorrow. The reason I am telling you this is not because of money. We can afford the electricity bill today, but please be more moderate in using electricity. Leading a Frugal Life Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Hsihu, Formosa, December 24, 1991 (Originally in Chinese) When you cook, you use too much ginger. It is not only wasteful but also not delicious. Money is not the only thing you waste; you waste many other things as well. Fields where ginger has been grown cannot be used to plant other crops for several years. I hear that it is because the soil has become too pungent. If you grow carrots in such soil, they will become pungent carrots. (Master and everyone laugh.) (Fellow practitioner: No other crops can be grown for six years.) Wow! After growing ginger, the soil cannot be used for six years. Can you imagine that? Therefore, it is very wasteful; it is not just a matter of money. If every one of us can do things considerately and frugally, we will not be the only ones to benefit. The whole country and even the universe will, too. Therefore, we must not spend lavishly just because we have money. No! The materials in this world are to be shared by the world. It is because people do not think considerately, but act wastefully instead, that there are people starving to death in the world. Some developing countries sell their food at low prices to developed countries, and later domestic food shortages cause starvation among their own people. Therefore, when some people are too wasteful, others will suffer from insufficiency. The ginger that we use in cooking is used as an herb in other countries. Drinking a little bit each time or using a little to prepare ginger soup will keep us warm for a whole day. But here, we cook entire woks full of ginger for several thousand people. You know how big our woks are. God knows how much ginger you cook! It takes a long time to grow this ginger! Ginger is mostly planted in the mountains. Farmers have to carry fertilizer up the hills, and plant the ginger in lines on the slopes; it is a very laborious and difficult task. The more we waste, the heavier is our karma, because people have to work extremely hard to grow it , with sweat and tears! If we waste too much, in excess of our blessed reward, we have to pay for that excessive amount, for other people's karma, effort and pain. When you sometimes eat very complicated or highly processed food, you don't feel good in your meditation that day. You don't have to wait until you have violated the precepts or eaten meat. Just by eating excessively processed food, or food requiring much preparatory work, we will also be hindered. Because people are very tired from working, their grudging atmosphere will go into the food. Since ancient times, spiritual masters have advised us to live a simple life, as simple as possible. Of course, I am not saying that you only need to eat brown rice seasoned with salt every day. (Master and everyone laugh.) What I mean is that, in every aspect, we must try to be as frugal and simple as possible. This is good for us, our country, and the whole world. Esteem and Protect Mother Nature Spoken By Supreme Master Ching Hai, N.J., U.S.A. June 24, 1992 (Originally in English) So when you park, try not to hit a tree! And don't cut it down just because it doesn't suit your car. Go find another place. The trees are there for beauty and protection. They're good for your car. When it's summer, it's not too hot, and when it snows a lot, they stop some of the snow, and it scatters all over instead of all falling on your car. They're very good. And the wind and all that, it's good for your car and good for you. Don't try to cut all of them down, or you will destroy the forest. We should try to preserve them, and meanwhile we can use them. That's why I think this car park is the best; you can park. And later, if it's necessary, we can sprinkle some gravel on top of it. But if the earth is hard enough, and it doesn't cause trouble, then we should just keep it like that. Otherwise, it might look ugly, criss-crossed and different. Also, when you pitch your tent, please don't clean up the dry leaves. They keep your tent protected from the moist ground, and also keep your tent soft like a carpet. So they are very good for you. Then when you take your tent away, the earth will not be left naked and the rain will not flow down with all the earth. And later we will have mountains no more. So just keep the leaves; they are clean. The leaves are very clean, soft and beautiful. For your feet, they're very soft, like a carpet. I saw in many places where you camp that you clean away all the leaves. This is very unintelligent! We should try to enjoy nature and preserve the natural environment. They are always good for us. That's why I don't allow people to cut the trees where it's not necessary. The weather has changed, in many places drastically, because people have cut down too many trees, and they cannot grow fast enough to replace them. The weather has changed, and the rains are being all washed away instead of being preserved in the earth. The trees attract rain and also keep the water; it flows slowly down, and it preserves the mountains. It also preserves the streams and the rivers and all that. If we cut down all the trees, we will be short of water, and the weather will change drastically. That we could not bear. That's why many places and many countries are short of water. Sometimes it's because they cut trees at random, not considering how it will be afterward, in the future. Because our children still have to live on; they will go on living after we die. After I die, this center will still be here and your children will come. So it's not for one or two days that you use places; you have to keep them for the future. Do not think that I am strict with you or forbid you to do that, do this, or do the other thing. It's all for your good. We have to preserve things that we enjoy. We have to think ahead into the future, and not just say, "Oh, I can use it today or tomorrow. I don't care," and damage everything. That's how people damage many beautiful places, cut so many trees and kill so many animals. Animals are there for a reason. They are also inhabitants of the earth; we have no right to kill them. I've heard some people say that their research has found that animals sometimes heal people's sickness, probably because of their love. That's why many people like to keep dogs and cats, despite the inconvenience and the attachment that they bind people with. But because they are so loving and probably so soothing somehow, people feel good and keep them. The same with trees, water, and forests-they also heal. Don't you feel better when you walk a little bit in the forest? Your eyes feel better. And your lungs feel good, your skin feels smooth, and your mood is calmer. That is all due to nature: The trees and the air that they breathe out to give us oxygen. Therefore, it is very necessary to keep nature intact as much as we can. If we told a professional, for example, to make a parking lot out of this, I think all the trees would be gone, with only cement left over. But I don't think it is necessary to do that! We have a big piece of land, and we can afford to just park between the trees. Because when you park over here between the trees, sometimes you don't feel like walking down right away. If you see a friend, you can just stand underneath the tree next to your car and have a few words with each other. It's better than standing on top of the overheated cement concrete floor. And then if you talk, both are also 'smoking up'! (Master and everyone laugh.) It gives you a very hard feeling, standing on the concrete floor. So I think I like to preserve the trees, not only for me but for everyone, for America, for the world. Everywhere we go we have to try to protect nature. Especially now that we are so-called spiritual practitioners, we should prove that we are very sensitive to the environment and to the needs of other people. I cannot believe a person parks his car and then has to cut down a tree just because it's in front of his car! He should park elsewhere. How can a person do that? It's a waste of time, waste of manpower. We already worked all day to make a parking lot for him. And then here he comes, parks one car and cuts down a big tree, this big already. (Master makes large circle with Her hands) It takes 20 years, maybe, to grow until the tree is that big! Very seldom do I allow people to cut down big trees, except when they are absolutely in the way. I just say to cut down the small trees, because they grow; those trees grow in maybe a few months. A few months from now, another tree will grow like that, so it's not much of a loss. It's not yet very important. But even then, only when necessary. Otherwise I don't let them cut them down. It's difficult to grow a tree, but easy to cut it down. When it's not necessary, why do it? I cannot bear that! It's cruel, inconsiderate and stupid. Really, you cannot just do things like that. If everyone comes in to park a car and cuts down a tree, or maybe even two trees, then soon there are no more trees. Just because he didn't like it in front of his car, he cut it down so that he could go through. He didn't want to reverse the car. I cannot believe it! So try to understand this, not only here, but wherever you go. Try to preserve nature. Only destroy when it's absolutely necessary, or you waste time, waste the beauty of nature, and waste manpower. And sometimes it wastes money. I'm very protective of the trees, animals, grasses, everything. I'm very protective because I feel hurt when they are destroyed. Even with reason, it's already bad enough. We can't be too ridiculously strict; we become too stupid then. But we cannot just cut things down at random. It shows our cold-blooded nature, and it's no good. Back to contents ================================================================== Questions and Answers Be a Moderate Environmental Preserver Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Sydney, Australia, March 16, 1993 (Originally in English) Q: If Allah, Buddha or Jesus were alive today, would they be Greenies? A Greenie is someone who is environmentally conscious. M: Partially, perhaps, yes. We should protect the Earth's greenery as much as possible for our own benefit. But we should not become nature worshippers, whereby every tree is worth more than a human being. Trees are for human beings. So in case we need them, we should preserve them as much as our space, time and the population allow. In that case, probably Jesus, and Allah, whoever, would vote for that. I am also a nature preserver myself, and all our practitioners are not allowed to cut trees unnecessarily. But if necessary, we cut them-in order to build in that space some better institution for other people. So we cannot always preserve nature without concern for human comfort. We had better see to the situation: where we should preserve and when, and how much. A Radical Solution Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, United Nations, New York, USA, June 26, 1992 (Originally in English) Q: Thank you, Master Ching Hai, for sharing your wisdom with us. I have a question about the escalating world population and its accompanying problem of further environmental abuse and the greater demand for food. Would you like to comment on the escalating world population? Is it world karma? Or is this going to create a certain kind of karma in the future? M: It's not that we are overpopulated, really. We are just not spread out evenly. People are just condensed in certain areas of the world and do not want to move to another area. That is all. We have many vast areas of wilderness that have not been used, many virgin islands, many vast plateaus that are only green with forests and there's nothing there. People just like to concentrate in New York, for example, because there's more fun here.(Laughter) Yes, because if a government is able to create jobs and industry and employment of different kinds in different places, people will go there also to work. They just get condensed in certain places because it's easier to find employment there, or safety. If the safety, security and employment opportunities presented themselves in those other different places, people would go there also. They would go for security, for their livelihood. That's very natural. So, it's not that we should fear overpopulation. We should be more organized to give the people of the world more benefits of employment opportunities, housing and security. Then everywhere will be the same. We will never be overpopulated. And about your question concerning food, you should know better. Because in America, we have so much information concerning how to preserve the world. The vegetarian diet is one of the best ways to preserve the world's resources, and to feed the whole population of the earth. Because we waste a lot of vegetarian food, energy, electricity, and medicine to raise animals. Whereas it could feed other people directly. And many countries of the third world nations sell their protein-enriched vegetarian food for cheaper prices. But that is not a help to the other world nations' populations. If we spread out all the food evenly the vegetarian diet will help this, not only for ourselves, not only for the animals, but for the whole world. One of the research magazines has already said that if we eat vegetarian, the world will not be hungry anymore. And also we have to organize. I know a person who can make rice bran into nutritious food and milk, even. And we talked last time about that. He said he spends about three hundred thousand dollars and he can feed six hundred thousand people in Ceylon-the poor, the undernourished, the mothers, and all that. It was fantastic! It's because of the way we do it in many parts of the world; it's that we waste the natural resources, and not that we don't have enough. God wouldn't put us here to starve. Actually, we starve ourselves. So we have to rethink, reorganize, and that needs the blessing of many countries' governments. They have to bless us with their absolute honesty, cleanliness and dignity, and the will to serve people instead of serving themselves. If we have this blessing from all the countries' governments, we'll have no problem. We have to have good leadership, good economic organization and ruling talents, and honest governments. But that can come about more rapidly when most of these people or all of these people become spiritual. Then they will know the discipline; they will know the precepts; they will know how to be honest and clean; they will know how to use their wisdom. They can think of many things to do and reorganize our lives. Q: That seems to be very difficult because as I see it, much of the environmental abuse today has to do with a growing population's demand for more living space, for homes, for living the way we in the 20th century know and want to live. Look at the jungles in Brazil, the environmental abuse there, the destruction of the forests there, the rain forests. The land is being defoliated and that results in floods. And these are not unrelated to the problem of overpopulation. M: Yes, everything is related to each other, of course, in this world. And the only solution is to solve it from the root, not the branches. And the root is spiritual stability. Understand? (Applause) So all we have to do is to try to spread the spiritual message, what we know, and keep to the spiritual discipline. That's what people don't have. It's OK to plug yourself into an electric machine and have some lights and some buzzing music and get samadhi. But if you don't have moral discipline, then you only use the power for bad things sometimes, and you can't control it. That's why, in this group, we teach people the precepts first. Precepts are important. We have to know where we go and maneuver our power. If we have power without love, without compassion, without proper understanding of the moral value, then it's no use. It becomes black magic. That's where black magic comes from. So, it's easy to get enlightenment, but it's hard to keep it. In our path, if you are not truly disciplined and morally equipped, the master will take away some of your power so that you cannot abuse it and do bad things to the society. That's the difference. Master has control of the master power. I am very happy with all of your intelligent questions, very intelligent. People do these things because they are not wise enough, like abusing the land that you have mentioned, or doing something just because of their lack of wisdom. So the root is wisdom, spiritual practice, getting enlightened. Back to contents ================================================================== Spiritual Cultivation and Daily Life Environmental Protection and Spiritual Practice By brother initiate Li Te-wei, Taipei, Formosa Economic and industrial developments have been accompanied by deterioration of the ecological environment on our planet. Natural resources have been mercilessly exploited, causing many severe natural disasters and changes in the world's ecology. Fortunately, many friends of the earth concerned about the environment and society have been striving diligently for the cause of conservation over the years. They have formed alliances to tackle various issues including industrial pollution, animal protection, excessive use of chemicals in farming, destruction of natural habitats, garbage disposal, nuclear safety, water pollution, and air pollution. In addition to campaigns to inform the public about the importance of environmental protection, such groups are also committed to launching related projects. Although their concepts and activities are affirmed and supported by most people, there is still a gap between the ideal and the reality in the daily lives of ordinary people. Thus, many individuals are not willing to join these campaigns, and instead hope that environmental problems will be lessened or solved by academia and scientific experts, or through governmental policies and legislation. As a result, in many places, environmental protection remains a formality and slogan; it simply cannot be enforced in daily life through practical action. The idea of "Green Consumerism" can play a vital role in initiating genuine concern among the general public about nature and the environment. The first step taken by "Green Consumers" is to choose daily necessities that are less harmful to the environment, less polluting, more energy saving, and more simply packaged. For instance, energy-saving lighting and electrical switches, nontoxic toys, biodegradable diapers, low-radiation electronic appliances, recyclable tools, water-saving bathroom fixtures, ozone-friendly refrigerators and air-conditioners, cosmetics made of natural compounds, non-petroleum based detergents, and organic vegetables and fruits may be used. In addition, installing kitchen garbage disposal systems and making living environments green and beautiful are also important steps. Such measures can not only minimize the negative impact of pollution on the environment and health, but also enhance the quality of life. With regard to food, clothing, housing, transportation, education and recreation, we can always give up our old habits for new ones to stay in line with the concept of environmental protection. Let us choose living utensils and lifestyles that give us peace of mind. Among our group of spiritual practitioners, it is not always necessary to advocate such measures, because we naturally behave like "Green Consumers". Strolling around the Hsihu Center, one can see fellow practitioners wearing casual but comfortable cotton clothes, savoring delicious, naturally grown and nontoxic vegetables, and tirelessly retrieving, categorizing and recycling garbage. The Nectar River, with its pure, clear water, flows through the delightfully green Ashram. There are no luxurious temples or halls, and no superfluous forms of construction or decoration. By the roadside outside the Center, local farmers sell naturally grown vegetables and fruits, as well as delicious food, natural detergents, and nontoxic insect repellents supplied by fellow practitioners. Permeated by the atmosphere of our respect for life and pristine nature even the plants and trees by the roadside seem to have become our dear friends. From conceiving the idea to putting our words into action, we have seamlessly and effortlessly integrated environmental protection into our daily lives and spiritual practice. (The author is the Secretary-general of the Life and Environment Protection Society of the ROC) Back to contents ================================================================== Media Report Features on Environmental Protection United Daily News, Formosa, February 20, 2001 United Nations Report Climatic Change Could Cause Global Disasters [Edited by Li Ming-chu/compiled from wire service reports, February 19] The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change presented its latest report on the Geneva conference today, stating that the ice caps in the North and South Poles will continue to melt and other climatic changes will occur over the next several centuries. The Earth's tropical islands and snow-covered Alpine skiing retreats may not be around for future generations to enjoy. According to the report, global warming will lead to increased agricultural yield in the northern region of the temperate zone, but will be detrimental to farms in the tropical zone. This will further widen the gap between the rich in the prosperous industrial countries and poor in developing nations. The report said that poor countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America will bear the brunt of the devastating effect of global warming, but the wealthier countries will not be immune either. In the United States, Florida and other areas along the Atlantic coast are most likely to be lashed by storms and endangered by the rising sea level. In the 21st century, climate changes may lead to large-scale and possibly irreversible changes to the Earth that will subsequently cause disasters worldwide. This report, an incisive review on climate changes published for the first time in five years, is a nineteen-page summary of a thousand-page research report entitled "Climate Change 2001: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability", conducted by some seven hundred scientists. Given the political sensitivities of the climate debate, the summary was subject to a weeklong discussion by experts and government representatives from many countries prior to release, and was finalized only yesterday. The experts on the panel have reached this alarming conclusion: Human-accountable climate change will lead to more "freak" weather conditions such as cyclones, floods, and droughts; massive displacement of populations in the most severely affected areas; potentially enormous loss of human life; greater risk of diseases such as malaria as the habitat for mosquitoes expands; and extinction of species such as the Bengal tiger, as their habitat is destroyed. The report predicted that crop yields in Africa will be reduced, water sources will diminish, and desertification will become more severe due to decreased annual rainfall, especially in South, North, and West Africa. Hot weather, floods and droughts in the barren and tropical regions of Asia may hurt food production. In the coastal lowlands of the temperate and tropical zones, massive population displacements will occur due to rising sea levels and land shrinkage. Southern Europe is likely to become vulnerable to drought, while other regions on the continent may have more frequent floods . It is predicted that half of the Alpine glaciers could disappear by the end of this century; droughts and floods will occur more frequently in Latin America; vital crop yields will be reduced in many places; malaria and dengue fever will spread in North America; and climate changes in the polar regions will be the most extreme of the whole planet. Back to contents ================================================================== Art and Spirituality The Secret of "The Creation of Adam" By Xiang Zhi, Hsinchu, Formosa The Italian sculptor, painter, architect and poet Michelangelo, is renowned as one of the three greatest artists of the Renaissance, along with Leonardo da Vinci and Sanzio Raphael. Among his numerous works, the painting "The Creation of Adam" is widely known and highly praised throughout the world, and is a vital part of his first masterpiece-a series of frescoes based on the Book of Genesis. The painting, which took four years to complete, depicts God creating Adam. Hes is shown surrounded by a group of angels while extending Hier finger toward the newly created Adam, who reclines powerlessly on the ground, waiting to receive complete life and power from the Creator. Since ancient times, people have been familiar with this episode recorded in the Biblical Book of Genesis. Thus, when appreciating The Creation of Adam, they are inclined to focus on the beauty of youth and health that shines forth from the newborn Adam, as well as on the wisdom and mercy radiating from God, who looks much older in contrast. However, if we study this painting from the view of spiritual practice, we will be amazed to discover a much more profound meaning hidden behind it. Through The Creation of Adam Michelangelo was trying to reveal the mystery of the wisdom eye! If we carefully observe the group of angels surrounding God in the painting, we can see that the outline of the angels is a precise a diagram of the human brain. The curtain encircling the angels clearly delineates a cross-section of the brain. The point where God's extended right arm intersects with the brain (the curtain surrounding the angels) represents the center of the forehead-the spot on which Master always reminds us to focus our attention. Going deeper from this spot to approximately where God's left hip is located in the painting is the pineal gland in the human brain-the position of the wisdom eye. Michelangelo thus created this fresco as a tool to reveal to the world, in an extremely ingenious and metaphorical manner, that ever since the beginning of human creation, God has been communicating with humankind through the wisdom eye; the life and power bestowed by God are also transmitted through this secret passageway connecting the secular world and the Heavenly Kingdom. The Bible says that we are the temple of God. Michelangelo went a step further to indicate the position of God's throne in his painting, and to expose this eternal mystery of the universe to the world. Judging from his exceptional talents in many fields, and his lifetime of accomplishment, we can assume that, five hundreds ago, Michelangelo had already explored the temple of God and obtained the inexhaustible treasure of the Heavenly Kingdom. That's also how the main character Truman feels in the 1998 film The Truman Show. His life, starting from the very beginning when he is in his mother's womb, has been made into a TV show and is broadcast live 24 hours a day to audiences around the world. Truman's parents, wife, and even his best friend are all players in the show. His hometown of Seahaven, an isolated island, is actually a huge soundstage, with more than 5,000 hidden cameras. Although he doesn't know this truth, Truman never stops his inward longing to explore the outside world. To prevent him from traveling beyond the sea, which connects to the real world, the director of the show traumatizes him through many events, one of which is inflicting the guilt of his father's death at sea upon him. Afterwards, Truman never travels on water. However, his life is not without revelations of the truth from his sympathizers. When he is in college, for example, a girl (an actress) tries to tell him the truth and says, "Everything here is fake, is all for you. The sky, the sea, everything is a set for a TV show. They are just pretending." By doing so, she is forced to leave the island. But at that time, Truman does not understand what the girl is telling him and what is actually going on. He tries to look for her constantly after her sudden disappearance from Seahaven, but his efforts always end in despair, until one day, when he is in the deepest sorrow, he starts to think of his beloved girl and the words that she told him. He then becomes aware of the illogical things around him and tries with all his might to discover the truth. By and by, he finds that the more intense his longing to go beyond becomes, the greater are his bondage and obstacles. This scenario is very similar to our situation here, in that we have been trapped life after life in this illusionary world. We are greatly bound, and kept from the Truth. Just as the director of Truman's life story said, "There was nothing real. You were real, that's what made you so good to watch." Because Truman is real, he has the right to free choice although he lives in an illusionary world. He can choose to pursue the truth and risk his life to escape from this world of illusion, or to continue his fake but safe life amidst applause from the audience, living a seemingly rich life manipulated by others. However, Truman chooses the way of truth. Despite the countless difficulties he experiences during his pursuit of the truth, strong opposition from his friends and relatives, and a near loss of his precious life, Truman's unwavering quest for freedom eventually touches the hearts of the audience. The director realizes that he cannot manipulate or control Truman any longer, so Truman finally finds himself free and reunites himself with the girl he loves. Truman's courageous struggle to break free from his illusionary world is an exemplary model for people everywhere, especially those of us who practice the Quan Yin Method. For some, the path of spiritual practice is smooth, and for others, it is filled with setbacks. But however life treats us, we clearly understand that this world is not our real Home, so that we must not submerge ourselves in it. We will be able to overcome all obstacles and realize the Truth on our journey back to God only if we have a sincere longing and true love for the Most High. Journey Home By sister initiate Joys, Canada (Originally in English) I am on my way Home to meet my Eternal Beloved. Joys fill my heart at the end of my journey. If the wind shouts at me, I shout louder than he; If stones mountain-high stand before me, I climb up and am higher than they. If a fierce whirlpool tries to carry me away, I hold more strongly onto my love for Her; If turbulence shakes me, I shake the whole world with my love for Her. I am no longer afraid, because I am true to myself; Because I love Her, and She knows that; Because we know: Nothing can stand between us and our Love. At the time, fellow practitioners from Costa Rica formed a relief team to help the victims in the affected areas. In addition to sharing Master's divine love with the people, we also provided building materials and food, hoping to help residents rebuild their homes and survive the difficult times. In May, Master again contributed US$10,000 to the victims. Thus, fellow practitioners from Costa Rica made another trip to El Salvador and formed a team with local fellow practitioners to convey Master's love and concern to the quake victims. When our team arrived in El Salvador, we were immediately greeted by the citizens and councilors of Tamanique County, who stood in ranks to welcome us and invited us to a vegetarian dinner at the hotel where we were staying. During the meal, they described the miserable living conditions of many households affected by the two quakes and efforts by a Tamanique government task force to promptly resolve the accommodation problems of the victims. They also took the opportunity to ask about Master's teachings and deeds of compassion. It was their sincere desire that Master would accept their invitation to visit El Salvador in the near future. During our stay in Tamanique County, many households earnestly invited us to stay in their homes temporarily; their cordial reception warmed our hearts. Our merciful Master always arranges everything for us perfectly and discretely, so that we can smoothly accomplish our tasks. Our main mission in Tamanique was to visit the local communities to determine which homes were in poor condition and vulnerable to heavy rain, so that we could ensure that the materials would really reach them. After attending a conference by the township reconstruction and development committee, we found that the most urgently needed items were food and zinc sheets for roofing. The Lady Mayor generously provided transportation for us, so that we could conveniently proceed to various communities to make purchases and distributions. When traveling among the communities, we noticed that many households were in urgent need of building materials and food. Situated in remote areas that were difficult to reach, they were deprived of concern and help from the outside world. This strengthened our determination to go deeper into the mountain areas to convey Master's love and concern to these forgotten victims, many of whom, upon seeing Master's photo on the sample book, immediately forgot their suffering and material needs, and began to experience peace and bliss. When they realized that it was Master who had instructed us to help relieve them of their homeless and starving condition, they were deeply touched by Her selfless and boundless love. While doing the relief work, we came to realize that everything was manipulated by God's power, and we were simply tools of God. We not only brought material relief to the victims, but also conveyed the message of love, which was of the utmost importance. On the last day, the distribution of zinc sheets was completed. When we were meditating that evening, we heard the pattering sound of rain. God had let the rain fall only after we had distributed all the building materials to the victims, which seemed to convey the message that God's blessing had graced this heavily afflicted area! This time, two hundred households received zinc roofing sheets and three hundred received food supplies. For both fellow practitioners and local government officials, the operation was an unforgettable experience. Two different political parties worked with us for the first time, and it was also the first occasion when they had worked together for the wellbeing of the people. Though there were some hindrances at the beginning of the project, everything later went smoothly. When the work was completed, the participants wholeheartedly said, "This miracle is all due to Master's grace, because She always shows us a good example through Her own deeds; regardless of our religion, political affiliation, or color, God loves us all without discrimination." Thus, we are forever thankful to God for letting us be Master's disciples. We are fully aware that "Love" is Master's only icon, and that She takes care of every fellow disciple and all the brothers and sisters around us without discrimination. Children from Heaven [Seoul, Korea] In Korea, Children's Day falls on May 5. On this day, the dreams of children come true, as they receive specially selected gifts from their parents, have fun in amusement parks, and enjoy the love of their parents. Therefore, Korean children eagerly look forward to this day each year. It is the most joyful festival of the year for children who have parents. But for orphans, it is the saddest and loneliest day. Thus, on the eve of Children's Day, initiates from the Seoul Center visited two orphanages and presented gifts and necessities to the less fortunate children living there. We presented detergents and clothes to Song-Am Orphanage in Shiheung City, and Gwang-Myung Orphanage in Yangju-Gun. The children loved the presents so much that they jumped about in elation as they selected the clothes of their choice. These children, who are greatly in need of love, firmly grasped our hands in hope of keeping us there longer, and invited us to dinner. We were deeply touched to see how happy they felt with such small gifts. They were just like children from heaven. Thus, I have found the Origin of the soul, And my life has opened into Infinity. May is a month of warmth and joy, as the day dedicated to all Mothers falls within this month, and so does the sacred birthday of our Master. This May, Master bestowed a delightful surprise on us by designing for Her dear children a range of clothes for ladies and gentlemen. To share Master's infinite love with the world, the SM Celestial Clothes Group held a special "2001 SM Happy Yogi Spring/Summer collection debut show" at the Hsihu Center. At the time of initiation, Master has already unveiled the mystery of the universe and planets to us. Now She sends us further memoranda through these symbols of enlightenment--the "Sun", "moon", and "stars"--in the latest SM Happy Yogi leisure clothes, reminding us to practice diligently and find our inner Heavenly Kingdom soon. The "Star" collection: Close-fitting blouse with a matching pair of straight-cut, full length trousers. The fabric is pure cotton, processed to produce smooth surfaces on both sides; the texture is very fine, soft to the touch, and comfortable to wear. The patterns of glittering stars on the front of the blouse are in colorful relief, embroidered using expensive artificial Japanese chamois. The collection is available in white and the popular pastel colors beige, light yellow, light pink, and pastel green, giving a very charming and delicate appearance. The "Moon" collection: The pure cotton blouse has a crescent moon pattern embroidered on the chest with artificial Japanese chamois in vivid, three-dimensional relief. The floral pattern of the trousers is highly original and goes well with any garment. The fabric choices available include a special Japanese fabric with purple flowers; rayon with two ranges of orange and blue flowers; and Italian viscose in coffee colors. The "Sun" collection: This collection, available in beige-colored, pure cotton jacquard fabric, is based on an artistic design created and personally sketched by Master after the 2000 retreat in Korea. The SM Celestial Clothes Group especially engaged fellow initiates to produce the design according to the original drawing.
