She + He = Hes (as in Mess) Her + Him = Hirm (as in Firm) Hers + His = Hiers (as in Beers) Example: When God wants, Hes makes things happen according to Hiers will to suit Hirmself. It's very difficult for us to concentrate on God. Just to think of the name of God, or even to remember that God exists is already very difficult. We tend to forget God when we need God the most. But this is the practice. This is why we have to do it every day, until we overcome our weaknesses, overcome our problems, and remember God every time, in every situation of our life. Until we close our eyes and we see Hirm. It's not that in one minute to the next, you can become united with God right away. After thousands of reincarnations, millions of years of recycling yourself in this world, it is very difficult indeed to re-acquire this habit of remembering who we really are. We are Gods. We are one with God. If we are one with God, that means we are God. At least if we are the children of God, we have the God quality. Any child bears some resemblance to his father, by having the father's DNA and blood type inside. So we cannot say we are not Gods. If we are not Gods, or we are not the children of God, where do we come from? Dinosaurs? And then where do the dinosaurs come from? They have to be traced back to the origin somehow. But we have forgotten this. Even I forget sometimes, when I am under pressure and suffer. I forget it for your sake, so that I can suffer. So maybe you have forgotten yourself for someone else's sake. Or, that is your sacrifice. You struggle for someone else's benefit. It's all right. But don't lose heart; just continue. The fact that you have come to seek God through initiation, the fact that you have come all the way here, despite the difficulty of your journey, your country, your job, or your family problems, you come and sit here a whole week in this intensive period of time, hoping to find God, that is very, very precious already. The intention is important, not always the result. God knows! God knows our intention. That is very important. And you know your intention. That's important. The Light and Sound are only the proof that God exists. Hes exists anyhow, whether we see or don't see. In the Bible, it is stated, "Blessed are those who do not see but believe." The people who see God, who experience God, they believe. That's easy; their longing is not intense any more. But for the ones who don't see, their longing is the substitution for blessing. As long as we still long for God, we still have the blessing, we have the connection with God, we feel that we have something to work for, something to strive for, to achieve, it's okay. Don't always sit there and expect an experience. This is the worst experience that you can have. Because the expectation dampens the spontaneity, dampens your carefree spirit, and that in turn sometimes really obstructs the vision. Have you ever experienced that, when you sit in front of the television but you are so wrapped up in some problem you don't even see what's there? Or when you're reading some book--you're reading and reading, and you know the exact words, but you don't understand anything. You read it again and again, and still it doesn't register in your mind what the book or the letters are all about. So, God is always right there. It's just that we are over-anxious, and also over-burdened with troubles. Be patient. That is the way you have to work through your life. That is your destined mission, to work through problems. That's how you earn your place in Heaven, working through them. And if you don't work this life, next time there is double interest. How terrible! That would be worse. It's true. Every time we come back again, the obstacles will be more manifold. That's why people are afraid of reincarnation, not because we have to be a human being again, but just that we have to face many more problems than the last reincarnation, until we work it all out. And really, without the Master's blessing, without Master power, we couldn't make it. With the past karma, the present karma, and the coming karma--ooh! (Master shakes Her head vigorously from side to side.) Even if you think I don't have problems, I do. Every problem you have, I have--sometimes more intensely, or the problem is more intense. But we have to survive, so I have to pick myself up, and then continue my work. You think it's easy to be a Master. It's not true. I don't know about other masters; you can go ask them. I don't know. But for me, it's not easy. It's not a problem physically. It's an inside problem. You can't point it out, like, "Oh, it's my children," or "It's my work." I can't even point to what my problem is; it's just there. Sometimes it chokes me. Okay, we all have to struggle, but we can make it. We are making it! We will arrive. We felt very happy and encouraged that a Quan Yin messenger was able to help us hold the seminar. During the seminar's question-and-answer session, the guests asked questions with so much enthusiasm, that one brother said it was really different than previous ones he had attended. After the seminar, half of the attendees stayed to learn the Convenient Method of meditation. We felt greatly blessed that we again got a chance to participate in the local Dragon Boat Festival. We arranged another seminar one week after this event (on August 25) as a follow-up to our June seminar. The Dragon Boat Festival in London, Ontario operates as a non-profit event, and the money generated is used to support local charities. This year, the Festival attracted over 40 teams from many cities across Canada, and was well supported by the public. Before the Festival began, the weather forecast predicted a high chance of showers on the two days during which it was scheduled, potentially ruining it. But as usual, with God's blessings, the weather "miraculously" cleared up, and in fact remained perfect during the Dragon Boat Race, and then heavy rains occurred after the Race concluded. Our booth was quite attractive with its display of Master's publications. Many of our guests picked up flyers announcing the following week's seminar. One lady read the flyer right in front of our booth, and murmured to herself that she had been searching for this a long time, and now she had found it. She immediately asked for an additional flyer and sample booklet for her daughter. A gentleman from the booth adjacent to ours, who was promoting his martial arts group, told us that he recognized Master's picture from a previous visit to Japan, was interested enough to take a flyer, and expressed his wish to attend the upcoming seminar. An older couple recognized Master's picture and told us that their daughter-in-law in Alberta was a Quan Yin practitioner. They had their photograph taken standing next to Master's picture, and said they would mail it to her. A lot of interest was shown in our booth at the Festival, and we felt that attendance at such a public event was very useful in spreading Master's message and promoting the upcoming seminar. The subsequent seminar was well attended and the audience consisted of a broad spectrum of people from different age groups and ethnic backgrounds, giving us the opportunity to spread Master's universal message widely. This time, we decided to make some changes in the format of the seminar, in order to broadcast Master's words more effectively: The seminar itself was very short in duration. We first showed Master's TV program, which lasted half an hour and consisted of three parts: 1) a news report about Master at the Parliament of the World's Religions in South Africa; 2) one of Master's lectures; and 3) Master's music concert in Hollywood. Because the duration of the seminar was kept short, most of the guests stayed the entire time. During the question-and-answer session, people were very enthusiastic with their questions--some asked for confirmation of what they understood about Master's teachings, and most were sincerely trying to find answers in their search for self-realization. After the seminar, some people acquired Master's publications and showed great interest in Her teachings and an appreciation of our efforts. Many visited our center in the following weeks to join the group meditation or borrow more tapes. One new Convenient Method practitioner said that he felt elevated and relaxed while watching Master's videotapes. He also said he had learned a lot from Her and thus respects Her very much. Another brother told us that he had been searching for Master for 25 years, and had finally found Her. Because of his intention to get initiation, he raised a concern during the seminar: He had a farm which had many mice in the fields, and sometimes he had to use mousetraps to catch them. After hearing the answers to this question from initiates, he asked the mice to go away when he got home from the seminar, and surprisingly, the mice disappeared right after that day! He also said that half an hour of meditation is not enough, and he misses meditation so much that he can't wait to continue another half hour of meditation the next day. Through these events, we have come to realize that there are many sincere truth-seekers in our area, and thus we must continue in our efforts to bring the good news of Master's teachings to them. Moreover, our hearts are always filled with joy whenever we see people elevated into the noble way of living that Master conveys. (Sp5-1-127) Report from California, USA The Second Annual International Street Faire [San Jose] The San Jose Center of the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association recently participated in the Second Annual International Street Faire in Sunnyvale, California, the heart of the Silicon Valley. The festival, hosted by the Sunnyvale Library and Parks & Recreation Departments on September 22, 2001, received widespread recognition from diverse cultural groups in the community. In light of the September 11 tragedy, this year's festival reflected many fine moments of intercultural unity and acceptance, which are needed now more than ever before. In this spirit of harmony and peace, Association members from the San Jose Center volunteered to introduce vegetarian dishes to community members. Our booth was popular among festival attendees, many of whom indicated that they did not follow a vegetarian diet, but would very much like to try it, because they knew that vegetarianism "would be good" for them. One youthful senior citizen came to our booth and asked if vegetarian food was any good. Our volunteer answered that if she did not like it, we would gladly refund her money. A while later, the same lady came back. In her hand was Master's sample booklet, which she had picked up at the display table down the street. She exclaimed with a smile, "That food was delicious!" Others also came back for seconds or bought food to share with their families at home. The San Jose Center later donated the entire proceeds of US$800 generated from vegetarian food sales that day to New York relief efforts. At the Sunnyvale International Street Faire, the San Jose Center also had opportunities to share Master's teachings with community members. Sample booklets in different languages, such as Aulacese, Chinese, English, Korean, and Spanish, were picked up by many festival attendees. A few days after the event, a fine gentleman of Indian descent came to our Vegetarian Restaurant requesting to learn the Convenient Method. Asked how he had come to know about the Convenient Method, he said he had learned about our restaurant and the Method after stopping by the display table at the Sunnyvale International Faire. He must have found the Method beneficial, for the following week, he brought his wife to learn it and has been coming diligently for group meditation each weekend. Thank You, Master, for Your abundant blessings and the many beautiful gifts You have bestowed upon the world! (Sp7-1-127) Report from California, USA Divine Love Shines Over Southern California [Anaheim] On the warm, sunny afternoon of September 29, 2001, Anaheim, California, the home of Disneyland, was the site of a video seminar conducted by the Los Angeles Center at the Anaheim Central Public Library. Initiates displayed Master's publications, video and audio tapes and artwork, and offered delicious vegetarian pocket sandwiches, coffee, and a variety of other snacks and drinks for the guests' enjoyment. Some initiates wore red, white, and blue lapel ribbons to honor the memory of those who had lost their lives in the 9-11 disasters in the U.S. In light of these recent tragedies, the mood of the audience members was initially somewhat subdued, as fellow practitioners presented the lecture "Return to the Innocence of Childhood" given by Master in Stockholm, Sweden during Her 1999 European lecture tour. But Master's all-pervading love soon managed to overcome the serious tone at the event, as everyone became immersed in Her words of wisdom and compassion. Almost all of the participants received the Convenient Method, and afterwards meditated with the large group of initiates present. After a number of incisive questions about the practice from the new practitioners, the seminar drew to a successful close in an atmosphere of peace and harmony. Report from Korea 2001 Vegetarian Day [Seoul] The 2001 Vegetarian Day Expo was held at Insa-dong in Seoul by the Korean Vegetarian Union on September 23, attracting active participation and assistance from many initiates. The event drew attention to the necessity of providing vegetarian meals in schools and government agencies. Representatives from a number of organizations voiced their opinions about vegetarianism, noting that heavy emphasis on the meat-eating culture had obstructed the younger generation from accepting the vegetarian diet. They also called for vegetarian meals to be provided in schools and government organizations, so that the younger generation can come to realize the importance of the vegetarian diet and respect for life. In a lecture on vegetarianism and meditation, a contact person from the Seoul Center explained the need to observe a vegetarian diet by spiritual practitioners and everyone else. A representative of the Inchon Urban Ecology Research Center discussed why vegetarianism is the best solution for the new generation, while a pastor from the Seventh-day Adventist Church advocated vegetarianism from the viewpoints of health and spirituality. In addition, Buddhist monk Juk-Moon--well-known for his Buddhist temple foods--spoke on modern society and Buddhist temple food, and a representative of the Korean Vegetarian Union stressed the importance of vegetarian menus in planning school meals. Local fellow initiates provided considerable assistance in making the event possible, serving as master of ceremonies, setting up the audio system, presenting performances, and coordinating all arrangements. Guests lined up non-stop to sample vegetarian delicacies prepared by the VegeLove Co. run by the Seoul Center. With the dedicated support and work of local initiates, VegeLove easily attracted the largest number of guests and the attention of major broadcasting stations, such as KBS and MBC, which interviewed several fellow practitioners. The event generated widespread interest in vegetarianism, and many had the blessing of receiving Master's sample booklets and the opportunity for physical and spiritual elevation. (SP1-1-127)Large crowds gather to sample the vegetarian delicacies prepared by initiates on Vegetarian Day. (SP1-2-127)Major local broadcasting stations MBC and KBS conduct interviews with initiates. Report from Korea Enlightenment of Love [Seoul] The Supreme Master Ching Hai Painting Exhibition, the "Enlightenment of Love," was held with great success from September 12 to 18, 2001 at the Insa Gallery in Insa-dong, Seoul. The Insa Gallery, one of the best galleries in Seoul, requires that reservations be made two to three years in advance. However, the unexpected cancellation of a scheduled event gave fellow initiates an opportunity to exhibit the great paintings of our Master. The exhibition proved to be an enormous success, thanks to the enthusiastic participation of fellow initiates. Considering the event to be a precious opportunity to disseminate Master's teachings, initiates worked hard to put up posters in major areas around Seoul. A professional art director, who greatly admires Master's paintings, produced the catalog and invitation card for the exhibition. He also introduced Her works in his art magazine. On the opening day of the exhibition, the heavenly paintings on the walls filled the gallery with Master's blessings. Large numbers of people showed up. Many expressed great interest in the artistic accomplishments of Supreme Master Ching Hai. Several guests arrived, drawn by the spiritual blessing and soft, warm atmosphere generated by the posters and paintings. There was a rush of orders for the heavenly paintings, which brought spiritual elevation to the guests, as the brilliant light from the painting "Stone Cave" attracted special attention. The week-long exhibition provided an excellent opportunity for art lovers to know Master. When the exhibition ended, fellow initiates felt that it would be wonderful if they could have a permanent gallery to display Master's paintings. (Sp4-1-127), (Sp4-2-127) Report From Formosa Musical Feast [Kaohsiung] The Love Ocean Art Ensemble of the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association is composed of fellow practitioners interested in public-interest activities and the art of music. Since its establishment last year, the Ensemble has twice given charity performances at the Kinmen Elderly Home and Kinmen Prison. The group has also performed at the Taliao Women's Prison in Kaohsiung and the Kinmen County Cultural Center. In addition, the dance troupe of the Love Ocean Art Ensemble won first prize in the folk dance category at a dance competition held by Formosa's seven southern counties. After a series of public performances, the Love Ocean Art Ensemble has made a name for itself in Formosa. On September 22, 2001, the group was honorably invited to and performed in a program at the triangular auditorium of the National Science and Technology Museum in Kaohsiung. The museum integrates creativity, science, the arts, and the humanities in its exhibitions, and often invites prominent entertainment groups to perform there. The elaborately-planned event began with a Chinese zither recital, followed by choral singing that captivated the hearts of audience members. Next, a piano and violin duet gave immense pleasure to music lovers, who also enjoyed a tenor's singing, which left the whole auditorium reverberating with the sound of his vibrant voice. The audience also cheered and applauded a brilliant folk dance, followed by a romantic musical dialogue between a harp and a flute that pushed the event to a soul-elevating climax. The performance by fellow practitioners at the National Science and Technology Museum may be regarded as another form of Truth-sharing. Through the initiates' artistic expression of Truth, goodness, and beauty, the audience was uplifted in its level of consciousness. The lively, cheerful, optimistic and creative demeanor of the new-millennium spiritual practitioners erased from people's minds the conservative, solemn, and rigid impressions of the past. In her speech at the event, Legislator Hsiao Chin-lan lauded members of the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association for their professionalism, although they were merely amateur art lovers. Their successful performance proved to be a feast of music on an early autumn afternoon! (Sp2-2-127): Legislator Hsiao Chin-lan delivers a speech at the scene. (Sp2-1-127, Sp2-3-127) Report From Formosa Flower Arrangement Course [Pingtung] The bustling urban life leaves us no time to appreciate the beautiful things around us. Therefore, the Pingtung County Cultural Department arranged a series of community cultural activities for local residents. In support of the county government's efforts and in hopes of generating local interest in flower arrangement, Chairman Hsu of Linluo township's Environmental Protection Promotion Association invited the Kaoping Center of the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association to co-organize this meaningful activity. After elaborate planning and preparations, a three-month flower arranging program commenced on September 6, taught by sister initiate Lee, a professional teacher specializing in European and American flower arrangement styles. During this period, Quan Yin messengers visited the various centers around Formosa to convey Master's instructions. Fellow practitioners in Taitung earnestly joined the prayer and meditation session during this period. Many of those who were busy during the day tried to meditate throughout the night. A brother initiate said that, after meditating for two nights, he felt very comfortable and his body became nimble and light; although he stayed up two whole nights, he remained energetic and alert. The Quan Yin messenger also took the opportunity to correct many fellow initiates who had been meditating in the wrong way, and this subsequently helped them to see the Light. All the fellow initiates beamed with a divine glow, which made them look much younger. According to our past experiences, fellow initiates who sincerely follow and practice Master's instructions definitely attain spiritual growth. And as Quan Yin messengers, we also are elevated spiritually. Light Comes When the Way Is Right! When exchanging experiences with fellow initiates in Formosa and abroad, each time the Quan Yin messenger mentions contemplation on the Light, there are always some fellow initiates who claim to be unable to see the Light. This September, when the Quan Yin messenger joined a Taitung group meditation for world peace, again several fellow initiates raised this concern. Then the messenger showed them the correct way before meditating together. Those who originally could not see the Light happily announced that they finally saw the Light. During meditation, some fellow initiates often try to look at their wisdom eye with their physical eyes, or turn their eyeballs upward. This accounts for their unsettled hearts and inability to sit long or see the Light. When in samadhi, our eyeballs should turn upward naturally. If we do it deliberately, we will not be able to see the Light. Master has told us in one of Her discourses that, when contemplating the Light, we should not see with the eyes. Instead, we should focus our attention on the wisdom eye, and relax our minds as though we were sleeping but remaining awake inside. Then we should look forward from our wisdom eye in a natural and relaxed way, as though we were looking at things with our physical eyes in daily life. In our hearts, we should not expect or desire anything. After some time, unexpected experiences will then come to us naturally. When the way is right, naturally comes the Light! Back to contents ================================================================== Pearls of Wisdom The Way of Peace and Love Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Colombo, Sri Lanka, April 29, 2000 (Originally in English) We can live our lives in many ways. We can try to use violence or force, or we can try to use unreasonable measures, thinking that we can get what we want. But finally we all have to make the great choice, that is, to come back to own Self, to our God's Nature. The way of the saints since time immemorial has always been peace and love. That's our true Self. The Power of Thoughts Can Improve the World Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Cape Town, South Africa, November 28, 1999 (Originally in English) Our thinking will affect the whole planet. Even though our group may be small compared to the world's population, our thoughts are not small. Together we can make a difference, if our thinking is concentrated in the same direction. And this concentrated thinking power can defeat the other concentrated group of negative power, and then, we can better the world. That is also the purpose of our being here at this retreat, because we can change the future. No matter how bad the present is, we can still change the future, because we have the free will to do so. Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Edinburgh, Scotland, June 5, 1999 (Originally in English) The universal brotherhood is a vast, beautiful net of intelligence, and we are all a part of it. And if any part of this net gets into trouble, then the whole net is kind of delayed in function, and becomes defective. Therefore, we need to fix that part, and then everything will be all right. The Essence of Life Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, April 30, 2000 (Originally in English) We are, in fact, one. No matter what we do for each other, it is the same as doing it for ourselves, because we love each other. That is the essence of life. The essence of life is love. The essence of God, of Buddha, of Allah, is love. There's nothing else but love. When we make the choice of love, that is the highest choice, the noblest choice, which is our true Self, we will feel that we are very close to God, very close to Buddha. There are many choices we can make in life. Depending on the choice we make, we will become the being that represents the choice. Sharing God's Love Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Marriott Hotel, New York, U.S.A., August 4, 1999 (Originally in English) God's love always helps people. But we have to share it, and then we will know better. The more we share, the more we know the strong power of love. If you keep it all to yourself, of course, you won't know much. This is just like having money in the bank and never spending it, never knowing the thrill of spending it. You never know how much or what money can bring you, such as this nice car and these beautiful clothes that make you look different and make you feel good. It is the same here. Love, we have to spend, too. The more we give, the more we realize that it is great, that the most important thing in life is love. Back to contents ================================================================== While on the Path What Sacred Work Means to Me By sister initiate Rosemary, Melbourne, Australia (Originally in English) If you ever have the opportunity to do Master's work, seize it, as it is a blessing from God to help us! It is not that we are doing anyone any favors. As a contact person, I admit one of my shortcomings is that I sometimes get a bit frustrated with some of our brothers and sisters who come to group meditation regularly and do not help with Master's work when the opportunity arises. I find that the same people always have to do the bulk of the Center's work, when really we should share the work and rub together to learn from one another, so that we become more aware of our strengths and weaknesses. We then have to face the truth about ourselves and cannot hide anything. Otherwise, how will we truly know what we have? I have learned a great deal through working as a contact person. At first I was frightened of the responsibility, because I did not think I was good enough to do the job. But I told myself that if I had not been meant to do it, Master would not have given me the chance. I think I have made more mistakes and blunders than perfect decisions, but such errors have taught me more than doing things correctly all the time. My difficulties have given me greater courage to take on any situation or problem, knowing that it is okay to make mistakes, because that is a way to improve and perfect myself. I am no longer afraid of taking on responsibility in fear of not doing a perfect job. Making mistakes is better than doing nothing at all. When I do Master's work compared to doing the ordinary work of the world, I feel a greater force working with me. However, the negative force can be very strong sometimes, and the pressure unbelievable, especially with the politics at the Center. However, you get such experiences everywhere in the world, and if you run away from them, you will only encounter the same situations again and again until you face and rise above them. But at such times, I remind myself it is only a test from God. Hes wants to see how strong I am in seeing through the illusions of the negative power. This helps me to persevere, as each test makes me stronger. At the same time, when I feel the blessing power, it is so uplifting that I cannot find the words to describe how fulfilled I am inside. So if you want to progress, besides meditation, do not wait to be asked to do Master's work, and work cooperatively with others. Soon you will realize you are actually helping yourself. Thank you so much, Master, for the blessed opportunity you have given this Rose to grow. I have many more thorns than I realize. But without such an experience, how would I have known that I was not such a perfect rose after all? Being no longer blinded, I can now truly grow to perfection! No Logic in Love By brother initiate David, Togo, West Africa One day my doorbell rang. It was a little girl begging for money. At first sight, she appeared to be neatly dressed. I gave her some money but wondered why she was begging. After a short while, she came back with her younger sister, who looked at me with shining eyes. This time, the little girl explained her family situation. Their mother had passed away and their father had just sustained a leg injury and could not work temporarily. So she did odd jobs here and there, like selling trivial things. They had to go without meals if her business was bad. A strong feeling surged inside of me after I heard her story, so I gave her several times more money than I had earlier, and the two little girls left happily. I thought I would be happy to help her again if she returned. When I mentioned this story to a fellow initiate the next day, she told me that the little girl had visited her as well. She had asked the little girl to sweep away the fallen leaves outside her dwelling before she would give her any money. But the little girl left without doing so. I understood that this fellow initiate wanted those seeking help to first try doing something for themselves instead of always relying on others. But then I suddenly recalled something that Master once said: "We help when other people need it, and do not seek anything in return; we do it unconditionally." Nevertheless, the initiate's words made me feel that it was not worthwhile helping such people, because these things happen so often that we sometimes become tired of them. I assumed that I had been cheated again, and decided that when the little girl returned the next time, I would ask some initiates to visit her family to learn the truth. Two days later, a Quan Yin messenger came to Lohmay, my hometown, and talked about Master's loving concern for Ghanaian initiates. I felt a shock from a kind of spiritual light and suddenly realized that love comes intuitively, without logical analysis or judgement. It is unnecessary to consider what is the most beneficial way. All these years, I had let my values influence my decisions and used materialistic concepts to weigh my actions. I had always wavered back and forth, wondering which decision or action was better or worse. And this kind of thinking had plunged me into a physical struggle between good and evil. Fortunately, I have now met a living, enlightened Master, whose omnipresent teachings have helped me rise above my long-rigid values. Several days later, the little girl came again, this time with her cute, lovely, little brother. Later our initiates visited their family and found that it was just as the little girl had described. We asked the initiates to bring them some medicine and money to cover their living expenses. The little girl's father was very happy and thankful to receive our loving donation, and I felt happy myself. My thinking has been purified through this experience, and I now understand more deeply Master's teaching: "We do charity out of love, out of wanting nothing, out of just duty to mankind, out of love for less fortunate beings." Back to contents ================================================================== Master Says Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Cape Town, South Africa, November 27, 1999 (Originally in English) Heaven Is Only the Beginning For everything in this life, we can prepare. We must prepare a long time for everything we want to enjoy or experience. We even prepare for a 'rainy day.' We work hard and then spend some, and we put some in the bank and some in a savings account for emergencies. And we even save for retirement; we prepare for the funeral service, but we forget to prepare for the road after. Every one of us knows we don't live here very long. We are not here to stay. But the worldly demands and the struggle for survival have always tried to make us forget what we are here for, and that we won't be here very long at all. Learn to Face Death Squarely Anyhow, all of us will leave this physical world one day, but not all of us are prepared for the final departure. That's why most of us feel very uneasy and fearful about that day. Even though some of us are still very young, like me, we already worry about this fearful day of departure. That is because we have not prepared very well for it. We prepare insurance for sickness, for the house, for the mortgage and for everything else, but we have not prepared for the day that we will depart from this world. In the Bible it is stated , "Forsake the flesh for the spirit; learn to die so that you will begin to live." We might read this every day or even more than once a day. But many of us do not know how to die daily so that we can know life as it truly is. Of course, that's all right also. Because we all have Eternity to make our choices, again and again. I am not here today to show you how to live your life. I will show you how to die. Because it's only when we learn how to die and face death squarely that we will no longer be afraid of the unknown. Once we die, it's the same as living now, except with much, much better conditions. We are freer. We can move anywhere at a speed faster than light. We can have anything we want in an instant. We are freer than a bird. And we can have access to God anytime, because we will be one with God. But that is only if we have prepared for it. Because our thoughts are very powerful. In everyday life, whatever we think or desire the most will come to us. Suppose at the time of departure from this world that our thoughts were dwelling on something, and it had not come true yet, then we would return again to this physical planet to live out our desires or to fulfill our wishes. So for anyone who does not wish to come back here again, or who would like to master the destiny of their future existence after this one, there is a way to prepare for that. At the time of our departure from this world, if our thoughts are very powerful about something, we will be drawn to that thing, that event or that desire. This means that when we are alive, we should train our thoughts in a very positive way every day, as much as we can, until it becomes second nature, until it becomes us. Then at the time of death, we will go where our thoughts lead us. We are the essence of God and we have God power within us, whether we are aware of it or not. So our thoughts are, practically speaking, very, very powerful. God Is Forever Merciful If, during our lifetime, we are brainwashed into believing that we are sinners, that we are unredeemable wretches who are not worthy of God's love, that we will go to hell, and we have been told how terrible hell is--then at the time of death, if we believe what we have been told, we will go to the so-called hell. Even though hell doesn't exist, we create it or other people create it for us. Since the old times, fear has been injected into our genes, into our brains, into our way of life, so that certain groups of people could have control over us and make us submit to whatever their purpose, which was not always very noble. Therefore, in order to free ourselves, we have to re-acquaint ourselves again with the true teaching of all the Masters since ancient times. This teaching is that God--or Buddha or Allah--is ever merciful. We are the children of this highest power, and we will be forever loved, forgiven, and helped in any way possible in this life and the life after. I have seen that myself. I have seen God power at work. I have seen only love and mercy in the realm of the invisible as well as the realm of the physical. There is no such thing as damnation, hell or revenge from God. Because even if our mortal parents love us and forgive us time and time again, our God Father or God Mother will be infinite times more loving and forgiving. The only problem is that we have long been brainwashed into thinking that we will be punished for whatever mistakes we may make in this world. We will do so--we do all the time, because our physical brain, the physical body and the physical environment force us into making mistakes. But it doesn't matter what mistakes we make, God can always repair them. So Hes would never condemn or punish us in any of the ways that we have been made to believe. That's what I have discovered. So I would like to share it with you. And I hope that from today you will keep this in your mind, whether you want to study further with us or not: Remember that God is merciful. And have no fear whatsoever, either here or hereafter. At the time of departure, there will be beautiful beings of Heaven waiting for us immediately as the soul leaves the body. The reason that many people have not been able to see this, including at the time of death, is that they have not prepared themselves. Or perhaps they have prepared themselves in the wrong way, such as thinking they have done wrong in their lifetime, for example, like breaking some of the Commandments. Maybe these people have prepared themselves in a negative way because they thought they did something wrong in their life. So they expect damnation or punishment, and that's what they get. Retrain Yourself to Find God's Essence Whatever you believe shall be materialized, because you are God. You are one with God, always, even though at the moment, due to physical hindrances, some of us do not realize this. We truly have nothing but God within us and without us; we are nothing but God's essence. There is nowhere else we could go but to be within God's embrace, all the time, 24 hours. We are separated from God because of our thinking and our deep-rooted beliefs that we are mere mortals. In order to remember that we are God again, we must train ourselves backward again. The way we have trained ourselves to think--as separate from God--we have to retrain in the opposite direction. We will do that until finally it becomes automatic. And then, because we contact God every day through our diligent and pure intention of practice, we will know for sure that we are one with God. So at the time of departure, there's nothing but God surrounding us, or heavenly beings that come and greet us to the higher dimensions of Love. Some dead people do not see this phenomenon. Even though Jesus stands by and Buddha is near, they do not see Them. Also they don't realize that they could manifest anything at will, that they have the power of creativity in their hands. Especially after leaving this physical body, the whole power will be returned to us again. It's not really returned, but without the hindrance of this physical body we become all-powerful again, just like in the days we were with God, before we descended into this world. But some of us depart from this world without knowing this secret; we did not learn it; we did not learn to master our thinking while we were in the physical body. So at the time of death, we forget even more. For example, you have probably heard about people who died and "came back" complaining that they were in hell, they need help, they need prayer, etc. These examples are true but only for those people. They are not true in general--not true for you and not true for me. For those who have learned the secret of the universe, who have learned the power of creativity, and have learned to be one with the universal mighty power, they know everything before and after they die. They are masters of their own destiny--anywhere, now and hereafter. But to arrive there, we need some practice. It may take a few days, a few weeks or a few months. Not only do we practice to remember our own creative power, we practice so that we also enjoy Heaven while living; we enjoy contacting God's intelligence while we are still here on this planet, so that we can make use of this power to enhance our life and the lives of the people that walk on our path. But this takes some discipline, even though it's so easy. We would rather work for money, for a car, for a house or for a beauty, than work to re-earn the Kingdom of God. Why? Because it's become a habit. Whatever we have been trained to do since we were young, we continue doing that. The brain doesn't like change. The brain likes everything settled, simple and fixed, with the same routine every day. Whether bad or good, the brain likes that. It becomes very upset when change takes place. Because machines are like that, and the brain is also only a machine. Even the power behind the brain, the mind, is not very highly qualified for the purpose of attaining Heaven. The mind is just like the electric power behind the computer. So we have to return to the source of all wisdom and Truth. If we do not train ourselves now, at the time of death it will be too late. Prepare Yourself Daily for the Life Hereafter Our brain and our mind have become fixed into some negative thinking patterns, and we have not had enough time to escape from or to repair those patterns. But we can do so during the time that we sojourn on this planet. This is the easiest way. Because if we have not prepared for that day, if we have not learned about what we are doing and where we are going, then at the time of death we will be overwhelmed by different dimensional karmas. Karma is the Sanskrit term for the law of cause and effect. Whatever we do in this lifetime will be ingrained as impressions in our thinking, and when we die we will bring those impressions with us. So if we want to erase that, we must do some deep contemplation and purification. We can call it meditation, contemplation or deep prayer. But we must do it correctly. There is a very easy way to do it, but it must be correct. Just like everything else, there's a correct way. And if we know that way, it's very easy. At the time of departure, we all hope to go to Heaven. We normally should; every average citizen in the world will go to Heaven. But there are different degrees of enjoyment of Heaven, just like there are different houses in Cape Town. Some houses are cheaper, while others are more expensive, with more equipment, more comforts, a swimming pool, everything. The extent of our developed consciousness is the extent to which we will enjoy Heaven after we leave this physical world. That is, if we have trained ourselves sufficiently, we can ascend to Heaven immediately after death. If not, we will sometimes hover around for a while until we realize that we really are gone, that we no longer have a physical instrument to work with, that our speech will not be heard by our loved ones, or that our wife or our husband is bringing another person in front of our nose every day to our bed. And there's nothing we can do about it. It doesn't matter how much we complain or how many tantrums we throw. No one understands anything, and nobody cares. At that time, it creates great suffering for us. Also, we will be overwhelmed by the results of our thinking during the lifetime while we were in the physical body. During the time we are living, if we keep thinking negatively, then when we die, that's what we get. So if we die without preparing, without meditation on positive power, without connecting to God's power, the negative thinking that we had during the lifetime will overwhelm us and take us to unpleasant places. And that's why people say there is hell. We could escape from that hell if we are conscious enough at the time to walk out of our own prison. But most of the time, we have not prepared, so we are weak. We are not strong enough to walk out, so we have to stay in the negative atmosphere for a while until it dies down. There is also another kind of pressure for us, not just our own individually--created sphere of negativity or pressure. We also have the collectively created consequences of the people on this planet, as well as that of our relatives and friends. Because we haven't learned the art of mastering our own destiny or how to walk the correct way to Heaven, we will stray here and there; we will be pulled apart in different directions or pushed into the unpleasant scenery of an illusionary planet, which to us at that moment seems absolutely real. And that's how people say they enter hell, and they suffer. Ingrain the Right Thoughts before Death But it must not be like that. Even if you don't want to practice vegetarian compassion or practice meditation with us, you should always tell yourself and remember that God is merciful. That is the only thought you should remember at the time of death. Then you will be clear enough to see that Jesus is standing by, that Heaven is opening its gates, that angels are greeting you with the music of the Celestial Realms. You must remember something noble like that--that we are the sons and daughters of God, that we can never be anything lower than that and that nothing at all can harm us. These thoughts should be ingrained in your mind. If you think like this, you will not fear the Angel of Death because he doesn't really exist. He exists because we created him by believing in him during our lifetime, so he manifests. Whatever you wish shall be given unto you. Knock, and it shall be opened; ask, and it shall be given. Because on this planet, sometimes we ask for something and when it doesn't come immediately, we think it doesn't work. But it works all the time. It's just that because we are hindered by this physical body, we might not see a result immediately. Sometimes it comes a little bit later, and we have forgotten. We forget that we wanted it. We think, "Oh, this is just luck!" or, "This is just bad fortune that these things happen to me." But nothing really happened without us wanting it in the first place. Also, if we are not strong enough in our will, then of course the karma, the negative or positive collective consciousness will affect our daily life as well as our time of departure. In our daily life, we are more or less shielded by this physical ignorance. At least we don't know when something bad is coming. But when we leave this physical protection, we will see everything. Everything will affect us immediately. If we die, and the loved ones are crying and lingering and missing us so much, and they cry and they suffer, we feel it exactly as if we are suffering. That's why during the time of the loved one's departure, maybe the best thing is that we should just pray for them to go to Heaven, to enjoy and be liberated. Maybe we shouldn't be praying, crying, lamenting and missing them so much, because that will make them feel very miserable and delay their departure to a higher dimension. Death should be celebrated, not mourned, because that is our final liberation. Nothing can touch us anymore; nothing can harm us. Nothing can cover us anymore. We will know everything, and we will be a part of everything. We can be anywhere in a fraction of a second. Everything that we wish for will come true immediately. Remember Your Heavenly Heritage But in order to prepare for a higher reward than just this, we should learn the art of mastering our own destiny and our own future. We should create our own Heaven, prepare our own future, and not let the atmosphere or karma of other people influence us and drag us here and there like a slave or a dog. Because we are the master. We are the Children of the Ocean of Love, of God. We have dignity. We should walk like a god; we should act like a god; we should think like a god. It's not easy, because we have forgotten how to do that. But that's only a habit, and habits can be trained; they can also be broken with time. During our busy activities, of course it is difficult for us to control our thoughts and train ourselves again back to the glory of who we really are. That's why we have to choose a short time--span during our busy schedule to be quietly alone with ourselves and with God. At that time, we can concentrate our power of thinking. Then we can correct the habits of our thoughts and make them positive. And day by day like this, we will become the Children of Heaven again, as we really are. That's why we should meditate every day, not just after initiation. Because after initiation, you're liberated already. You are a free person. You really are free. No one can touch you any more. But in order to have a smoother life here and to enjoy Heaven while we're still breathing, in order to re-train ourselves into being the Prince and Princess of Heaven, we must remind ourselves every day. It's sometimes not even enough. Because we have already been reminded, time after time, for a long, long time, just how bad we are. So now we have to be reminded again of how good we really are. That's why it takes time. It takes everyday practice to remember this. You are not going to learn anything; you're just going to remember, because there's nothing for you to learn. You are the King of Heaven; you are part of Heaven, part of the whole universal power. There's nothing you cannot do. Just take the time to remember it again. I am here to help you to remember, and it's not as difficult as you think. It's easier than making a living; it's easier than driving a car; it's easier than sleeping. So it would be to our benefit to try, because it is so easy and simple. To those who could devote their entire heart and mind to regaining Heaven, we can give you the whole instruction. You meditate two to three hours a day, or as much as you can. For example, you can cut down a little on sleep, talk less on the phone, and watch only the important news on TV--don't just sit there and watch whatever comes on. So then you will have a lot of time. We find that we have a lot more time to spare if we cut down on many of the unnecessary activities we used to do just to kill time. Now we don't have time to kill; we use it to live. We use it to resurrect our soul. Then, not only will we feel good and bless ourselves, we will bless others as well. A habit is hard to break, we all know that. But that doesn't mean it's impossible. Before, I couldn't drive a car. I just got a license recently. So when I found that I could drive, my God! I felt like a human being. I felt like everyone else on this planet. I was so proud; I wanted everyone to see that I was driving. Because I trained myself. The first time, I failed. The second time, I failed. But the third time, I succeeded. Even learning to drive takes so long! It takes effort, money and concentration. Still, we can do it. We can do this and many other things, like learning English or even learning to walk. We were born crawling--not even crawling, lying helpless as a baby. But as a baby, we know how to try. We try to crawl, and then we try to stand up, and then we try toddling around. Then we try to walk. And then we run, and now we even fly! An Enlightened Master Lights the Way So everything is a process of learning. To a baby, it must seem impossible to see the adult running, riding a bicycle, driving, jumping around or dancing. But to us, it's easy, because we have tried; we have trained ourselves. Similarly, we can train like that to go to Heaven. It looks difficult at first, but it isn't. It is more difficult if we try by ourselves. But it's not difficult if someone else already knows how, and shows us by hands-on experience or teaching. It's very simple. That's why since ancient times, God has sent a lot of teachers to show us the way, because we have forgotten. Being able to show us the way doesn't mean that person is better than us. We call him or her "teacher" just because in the beginning, they teach us something. In this planet, we call someone a teacher of English or professor of Mathematics, for example. But in the order of Heaven, no one is lower or higher. There is just someone who walks the way first and shows the one who walks later. And someone who knows the way already can show us; it's easier, less stressful, surer and quicker. We could try to walk back to Heaven by ourselves, but there are so many parts of the road we don't know because we have forgotten, and sometimes it could be frightening. That's why many people feel they are not up to it. They're scared. But when you have someone walking with you, holding your hand and protecting you, showing you the way to walk and where to avoid, then the road is more pleasant. You have a companion, and it's quicker and easier. So in short, I am here in case you feel you want to remember again who you truly are. And there's no cost and there are no conditions. The so-called Five Precepts are not the Five Precepts. They are a measure of your readiness, or a way that we can measure our standard of quality. Remember when Moses came from the mountain and handed down the Ten Commandments? He said they were from God, so that we know where we are and where we stand. It's not that you must follow me "or else." It's not that. You don't even have to follow me. I will just teach you once, and you can remember all the time. Then you can do it alone. After we give you the instruction, you will know what to do. You'll be your own master every day. The difficulty is not following one master, or any master. The difficulty is being your own master, having the discipline to do what you have chosen to do and what you know is the best for your soul. Back to contents ================================================================== Selected Questions and Answers Enlightenment Brings Us Eternal Peace Spoken by Supreme Master Cing Hai, Prague, the Czech Republic, May 28, 1999 Q: Why do we have wars, disasters and catastrophes? M: Well, we cause all of these things ourselves. I am sorry to say it, but we are all responsible for whatever happens to us. That's because we are also a part of God, and we have creative power. Whenever we think of something loving, kind and correct, then we create a better atmosphere and we experience a better environment. Just like when you love another person or when you fall in love, doesn't that feel good? Even though you cannot prove what love is and you cannot touch it, you know it's love and you just feel so good. Everyone around us is also affected by this happiness. We can love everyone else when we're in love. We can kiss everyone else as well, because of the power of our love. In contrast, when we hate someone, we create hatred. When we have jealousy, when we have this lower kind of attitude and quality, we create a very negative atmosphere. That atmosphere in turn affects us and the people around us. And when too many of these negative or hatreful atmospheres are created, they are drawn together by the law of "like attracts like." Then they become vast and more powerful. They can influence even the weather and will influence people's hearts. And that is what causes disaster; that is what causes war. Don't you notice that sometimes when you are in an angry mood and you respond very sharply to another person, that person in turn also feels agitated and angry toward you? Then sometimes finally you both fight each other, because of this very burdensome and very pressurizing atmosphere of hatred and anger. So when a lot of this is going on in the atmosphere, it becomes real; it materializes in some concrete disaster, like bad weather or war or an epidemic. And this negative atmosphere, of course, will be attracted to wherever is already thickest with this kind of quality. All of the scattered negative energies will come together where there's already the densest 'clump' of negative energy. Then bad things will happen, right there. So we should make sure in our lives that we give love more and more, that we think before we act and that we stop before we think anything negative. In this way, we will also contribute to the peace of the world. But as mentioned earlier, ignorance is the only thing to be blamed for all these bad things that happen to us. Ignorance and not knowing God--that's the only criminal in this world, or any other world. Because if we are enlightened, if we know God, we are so happy and so blissful that we can never do anything wrong, or we're far less likely to do anything wrong. We are enlightened and wise; we know what's right and what's wrong. So the best thing anyone can offer us is enlightenment. And that's the best thing I can offer you: more than gold, more than diamonds, more than anything that is the so-called best in this world. Because even if I give you money or if I give you a house, these things will also pass away; they can also be destroyed by war, fire or accident. But if I give you enlightenment, you will be able to do everything you need to do, earn anything that you need to earn, protect yourself and take care of yourself forever. Even if you lose your home or your money, you will never lose your enlightenment or your wisdom. You can always start anew. You can always find ways to survive better and better in this world. So enlightenment is the best gift that God can give to us. ================================================================== The Way to End War Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Edinburg, Scotland, June 5, 1999 (Originally in English) Q: Do you think there will always be war? M: If our planet elevated itself to a higher level of spiritual understanding, there would be no more war. War only exists in an atmosphere of hatred, misunderstanding and frustration because of the distance between humans and the God within themselves. War is the crying out of anguish, of longing for Home; it's the most desperate and violent cry of a kid who doesn't know where his father is. So if we show him the father or the mother, he will stop crying and kicking his feet. The child doesn't know right from wrong. The child-hungry, thirsty, cold, frightened and lonely--only wants the bosom of his mother. That's all there is. But as long as our planet is still far away from God's knowledge, we will still have wars. And that's why I am coming to different countries, sometimes even without invitation, if God has directed me there--so that the child can know the father and stop all these desperate, lonely cries. In the higher civilizations of other planets, people are more intelligent and spiritually developed. They don't ever have war with each other because they know God is with them all the time; God is the only thing they live with and for. On this planet, not many of us can see God directly; we don't talk to God directly about all of our anguish, our frustrations, our fears and our worries. But despite our tough appearance, we all have our problems, weaknesses, fears, wants and desperation. And when we have nowhere to turn to, we tend to turn violent. That's how war happens. But the violent ones are also victims of war, in a way. The true victims of war and the ones who cause war are both victims, just of a different kind and different degree. The ones who cause war are the worst victims of all, because they don't even know right from wrong. They can't run away from themselves to take refuge in any other country, because they're deep within this terrible illusion of the negative power. They're struggling very, very hard. So the only way to end war on this planet or anywhere is to be enlightened, to know God--just like when the child is hugged by the mother, he stops crying. Back to contents ================================================================== Story World A Heavenly Kitchen By sister initiate Chiu Heng-chen, Taoyuan, Formosa In November 1999, I was fortunate enough to attend the Three-day International retreat in Cape Town, South Africa. Before the retreat, I thought that I would be unable to make it. But thanks to a series of miraculous arrangements, I not only successfully joined the kitchen staff, but also enjoyed the bliss of spiritual growth. I worked smoothly and happily, and immersed myself in inner bliss. When I saw fellow initiates in the kitchen set aside their preconceived ideas and habits to work with selflessness, the kitchen became like Heaven to me. And the familiar scenes made me realize that this feeling came from vibrations in the depths of my heart--my meditative experience and dreams had come true! Repeated feelings of elevation lifted me from the physical to the mental level, and then to pure consciousness, and finally to the spiritual level, where I became one with everyone. Can you imagine how initiates from many parts of the world could come together to make use of a limited amount of utensils and tools and convert vegetables, grains and vegetarian meats into one delicious dish after another? This was indeed difficult to do. But through selfless devotion and cooperative effort, all our tasks were managed easily. It was touching to see everyone working carefully and devotedly in the pursuit of perfection. The energetic rhythm of knife against cutting board was pleasant music that flowed like a gushing spring. Our happiness was hard to describe. I finally understood that extraordinary treasures also lie in ordinary things. When we are sincere, purified, and happily devoted, every job becomes supreme bliss, no matter how arduous the process may be. Even when my shoes wore out as I worked and had to be discarded, or when I was too tired to move my legs, I was able to gather all my strength again to return to my work post early the next morning. Thanks to all my venerable working partners, I got to know the pure and genuine side within them. And most of all, thanks to Master's arrangements, I was able to radiate the light of vitality, and satisfy my eagerness to challenge and transcend myself. Surpassing Physical Limitations By brother initiate Sam, Formosa The 1999 international retreat in Cape Town, South Africa was my first experience of an overseas retreat, and an unforgettable event in my life. The quiet and serene campsite, the bright blue sky, the tender ocean breezes, and the atmosphere of courtesy, harmony, and intermittent laughter among the participants made me wonder if I were in Heaven. It was the first time I went abroad and felt so close to Master since being discharged from military service. But the most interesting aspect of the retreat was the fact that just one week earlier I had had an accident on my way home from group meditation at our center. A speeding motorbike driven by a student in the wrong direction hit my motorbike head-on. A bone in my left toe was fractured, and the pain was unbearable. I almost decided not to attend the retreat, but found courage in this counsel from a fellow initiate: "Trivial or vital, it is a matter of perception." I knew that these solemn words calmly spoken were an indirect message from Master. In the few days after my accident, I trained myself not to succumb to the pain or let it affect by daily life. I insisted on doing everything myself because I did not want to become a burden to others during the retreat. Miraculously, four days after the accident, I could walk without a cane! During the retreat in South Africa, I could walk without assistance, and even moved about to help decorate the campsite. Soon after the retreat, my toe healed and I could walk normally. Thus, the retreat in South Africa not only let me experience paradise on earth, but also helped me surpass and overcome the limitations of the physical body! In war-tattered Afghanistan, tens of thousands of innocent people have fallen victim to the bitter war now going on in their country. Displaced widows and orphans are in an especially miserable situation, as they may not be able to survive the coming winter. They have already lost their loved ones, and are yet to face a grim reality. With deep sympathy for the Afghani refugees, Master recently sent a message to the Rescue Department of the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association, instructing fellow members to render them humanitarian aid. Below is Master's message: ================================================================== Date: Oct 17, 2001 To: Rescue Dept. Apart from meditation/prayer for world peace, please send aid to the following organizations: 1. UNICEF (The United Nations Children's Fund) US$50,000 2. The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies US$50,000 for the help they may render to our fellow human beings in Afghanistan to satisfy their urgent needs this winter. May God bless us all with peace and love! Thank you, Ching Hai ================================================================== Brotherly Love from Europe The September 11 incident in the United States was a traumatic nightmare without warning for countless people around the world. As panic, fear, and helplessness gripped large numbers of people, initiates at various centers worldwide had already launched a love and relief activity based on Master's instructions. (For more details, please see issue No. 126.) For example, far from the United States on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, European initiates demonstrated their heartfelt love and profound concern by holding frequent group meditation and prayer sessions. Brief reports on the actions of love and relief by selected European Centers are given below. Prague, the Czech Republic Prague initiates met for group meditation three times instead of once a week. Initiates were asked to pray for world peace and spend more time meditating at home in order to elevate the positive energy on our planet. Vienna, Austria Upon receiving Master's message, Austrian initiates held several prayer-meditation sessions as well as a three-day retreat in hopes of uniting spiritual forces for the early realization of world peace. Sofia, Bulgaria Local initiates held a prayer-meditation session and increased the frequency of group meditation sessions, which began with a sincere, silent prayer for greater understanding among all people through peaceful means. The initiates plan to hold a retreat during the last weekend of each month. Lodz, Poland The Poland Center immediately notified all local initiates of Master's instructions upon receiving them. Group meditation sessions began with a prayer for global peace as well as love, wisdom, and mutual assistance and cooperation among all people, so that humankind will be free from fear, war, and other forms of violence. Germany In response to Master's instructions, initiates of the Munich Center gathered for four daily sessions of group-prayer and meditation on September 13-23. The Berlin Center held a one and a half day retreat in Uelzen, attracting initiates from across the country. The Hamburg Center organized a two-day retreat to pray for the victims of the US disaster, while the Dusseldorf Center held a two-day-retreat on September 22-23, with a longer meditation session on Saturday. The initiates hoped that humankind could enhance mutual understanding in peaceful ways. Dublin, Ireland On receiving Master's message, the Dublin Center immediately passed the information on to all local initiates asking them to join in group meditation. Sessions were arranged for Wednesday and Sunday to pray for global peace and the 9-11 disaster victims. Brussels, Belgium Belgian initiates arranged an extra group meditation day on Sunday, September 16. It was exceptionally quiet that day and even the neighboring residents seemed to be affected by the quietude. At noon, initiates discussed Master's message and shared thoughts about the event. They also decided to hold an additional 'retreat day' monthly and to remit monetary contributions to the US to help the victims. Amsterdam, the Netherlands Local initiates held a two-day retreat during the September 29-30 weekend to pray for those who lost their lives in New York, Arlington, Virginia and Pennsylvania, and also for peace in the world. Helsinki, Finland Initiates in Finland met for group meditation on Sunday to pray for world peace. Ljubljana, Slovenia Slovenian initiates gathered several times for out-of-schedule group meditation sessions dedicated to world peace and social harmony. ================================================================== Master's Gifts of Love On the tragic day of September 11, 2001 in New York City, Master instructed fellow initiates to prepare some heartwarming gifts for the children of the victims. Soon after, She instructed us to contribute the remaining relief funds to the children of New York firefighters, both victims and non-victims alike., so that they could buy the toys of their choice. Thus, we spent the remaining US$37,300 on purchasing 746 gift certificates valued at US$50 each. The certificates, enclosed in separate envelopes, were presented to the New York Fire Department and the UFA (Uniformed Firefighters Association) Widows' and Children's Fund. At 1:30 PM on October 11, four fellow initiates arrived at the New York Fire Department headquarters, and with Master's blessings, easily found a parking place nearby, which was a miracle on a working day in downtown Manhattan. In the lobby, we were met by two young gentlemen, who told us that several firefighters were still at the disaster site and some materials were still smoldering under the debris. They were upset at the loss of so many friends, including the 343 firefighters who had died in the rescue work. When we met Battalion Chief Michael Canty, we introduced our group and explained the purpose of our visit. We then presented him with gift certificates valued at US$18,000, as well as Master's sample booklets and News magazines. He promised to forward the gifts to the children of the firemen and expressed his appreciation of Master's love before taking some pictures with us. From the fire department, we drove to the office of the UFA Widows' and Children's Fund, where we were met by Ms. Tama Reilly. She was delighted to receive the gift certificates, exclaiming that the children would be overjoyed to purchase the toys and gifts they wanted. She said some people gave toys like teddy bears which are not easy to store or handle. Ms. Reilly enquired about our group and showed great interest in Master's teachings and meditation. She and a colleague were deeply moved by our loving acts and thanked us for our carefully--prepared gifts, valued at US$19,300, for the children of the firemen who had lost their lives in the rescue work. The only real thing is positive; the only real thing is God; the only real thing is love. The only real thing is that whatever you want, you will get. And you will get all the good things, because that's what God wants us to have. ~ By Supreme Master Ching Hai Without a doubt, the recent 9-11 incident in America has written a tragic page in the history of humankind. The people of the world may have all kinds of responses to this unfortunate catastrophe, but our fellow practitioners worldwide still adhere to the ideal that "all people are brothers; Creation is part of me," revealing the utmost love and concern between brothers and sisters while conducting relief efforts after the disaster. Especially, fellow practitioners in the United States, under Master's guidance, amply displayed great calmness in the midst of the catastrophe, and a spirit of doing our best to help others. From the following reports and stories personally experienced by initiates, we have again proven that "God's love is forever with us"! A Loving Relief Effort By the New York Relief Team, U.S.A. (Originally in English) During the relief work at Ground Zero in New York City, it was very touching that all the booths set up by many non-profit organizations became one and everyone was a customer. Whatever one needed, one could ask for from any of other booths without question. No one asked you anything. Everyone loved to provide whatever was required. As Master has said, in difficult situations, people tend to become more spiritual. Our booths offered Chinese food, sandwiches, lunch boxes, hot coffee, tea bags, and fruit. Also, clothing, socks, gloves, and common medicines were available. Twice a day, the Seamen's Church Institute of New York and New Jersey provided us with regular supplies of ice bags and a variety of soft drinks. Our food was prepared in a temporary kitchen set up in the backyard of a sister's home near the disaster site, and transported to the site for distribution. On average, more than a thousand lunchboxes were consumed daily. Since our booths were beside the main entrance to the fenced and guarded area at Ground Zero, most of the rescue workers needed to pass by our booths. Many had the chance to be served by our organization and most were very happy to associate with us. In t he beginning, we could hardly get inside the scene to serve. But later, many policemen, national guardsmen, and volunteer workers from various organizations got to know us as a very dedicated organization, and came to greatly respect our spirit of service. On the afternoon of September 18, Governor George Pataki of New York State came by our first booth and complimented us for our work. The next day, he visited the site again and as he passed by, cordially waved to us. As we knew that workers contracted by the government would be taking over the rescue work on Thursday, September 20, we began to clean up and move out our booths after serving breakfast. As we worked, it began to rain, and gradually rained more and more heavily. We then delivered two boxes of raincoats that we had brought to the site and passed them out one by one. We felt that for the time being, our mission was over. Master had once again blessed New York City with Her abundant love and blessings! The Yellow Vest That Guarantees Unrestricted Passage By the San Jose Relief Team, U.S.A. (Originally in English) Members of the San Jose relief team participated in volunteer work in New York City from September 17-20. What we saw at the World Trade Center disaster scene was far worse than what was shown on television. Being there in person, we could experience firsthand all that was happening around us, and felt the emotions of the people in the area. The atmosphere was extremely sad and depressing, so our booth was there to bring Master's love and compassion to rescue workers and uplift their spirits. Our food booths were the nearest to the site of the collapse. About 30 brothers and sisters worked at the scene along with three Quan Yin messengers, operating in two 15-16-hour shifts per day. During the eight days of our relief efforts at Ground Zero, initiates barely had time to sleep. Each day, members of our organization worked round the clock to prepare meals and serve food and drinks to relief workers in the area. It was amazing that just with our yellow vests, initiation ID cards, and the simple emergency badges made by our group for the volunteer team, we could pass through security checks and enter the sites to offer direct help. Only designated personnel were allowed inside the site. It is no wonder that at the beginning of our rescue relief project, Master instructed all the relief volunteers to wear the yellow vest while doing disaster work. We certainly believe that Master's blessings were the main support facilitating our relief efforts at the disaster site. Timely Guidance By a brother initiate, Kentucky, U.S.A. (Originally in English) On our trip to the National Salvation Army Headquarters in Arlington, Virginia to hand over a donation check, we got lost! Speculations, ideas, and differing opinions among us did little to relieve the anxiety of missing our appointment. Then, surprisingly, a car passing by in the other direction stopped. The driver rolled down his car window and asked if we needed help. After knowing of our intentions, he pointed exactly at the building we had been looking for. We all realized that life is mysterious from moment to moment. This coincidence lightened our hearts in our moment of distress. Who else but our beloved enlightened Master would have given us such a surprise gift to inform us that She always takes care of Her disciples in any circumstances ! Two Hearts Sharing One Mission of Love By a sister initiate, Missouri, USA On the afternoon of September 12, 2001, I left home and headed for the New York Relief Center. With a deep desire to help with the World Trade Center disaster relief work, I decided to drive to New York City. On my way, at about 11:30 PM, my car was damaged by a huge rock that flew from a construction site on the side of the road. I pulled over and smelled gas. I called for help as a construction worker came to me at just the right time and gave me a ride to a motel, since my car was not in driveable condition. The next morning, I called a rental car company but there were no cars available. I then phoned the New Jersey Center to inquire about the situation in New York, and was informed that since many roads were closed, it was hard for people to get to the New York Relief Center. When I heard this news, I felt very frustrated and sad because I really wanted to go, but could do nothing except take the bus home. I arrived home around midnight. The next morning, I got a phone call from a sister whom I had never met, but who happened to be passing by my home (also the Missouri Center). She was coming from Los Angles. As soon as she learned about the World Trade Center disaster, she too wanted to help out and began driving to New York because the airports were closed and she could not get a flight. She said was coming to pick me up. She had originally wanted to phone the Missouri Center the night before, but thought it was too late, so she waited until about 5:30 the next morning. She thought that if nobody answered, she would go directly to the New York Relief Center. Usually I do not answer the phone when I meditate in the morning, but that morning, I jumped up as soon as the phone rang. This was how the sister and I got together to drive to the New York Relief Center. As I think back on all that happened, I cannot help but feel that Master really knows and takes care of everything. We feel that it was our common love and desire to help the victims that brought us together. We were truly two hearts joining together in one mission of love. Every morning and evening, the parents would go out to find food for their little ones. One day, when they brought the food home, the baby birds said to them frantically, "Pa! Mom! This is the end of us!" Startled, the parent birds asked, "What happened? Tell us quickly." The baby birds said, "We heard that the owner of the farm has asked his relatives and friends to come and help harvest the crops tomorrow. We will have nothing left to eat." Their parents comforted them, saying, "Don't worry about it. No matter what, his relatives and friends will definitely not come." The baby birds were confused, but they believed there must be some truth to their parents' words, because they were older, more experienced, and must know everything. Reassured, the baby birds ate heartily. Several days went by, and true enough, none of the farmer's relatives and friends came to help with the harvest. Then, a few more days later, when the parent birds came back with food, their little ones told them again, "This is the end! We heard that the farmer has asked all his children to come home tomorrow to help reap the crops. We will have no more food. We are in serious trouble!" Their parents laughed and reassured them, "No! It won't happen! Don't worry. Their children will definitely not come to help them. Don't be afraid." The baby birds were happy to hear that. Their parents had made the correct prediction last time, so they must be right again this time. The family enjoyed their dinner joyously, and truly, as predicted, none of the children came to help the farmer harvest his crops. Again, several days went by, and when the parent birds returned to the nest with dinner for their babies, the little ones again told them, "We are in trouble! We are in danger! We heard that the farmer and his wife have decided to harvest the crops by themselves tomorrow. They are not going to rely on others or ask for help." This time, the parents were really worried and said, "This is indeed the end!" (Master and everyone laugh.) The little ones asked, "This is strange! Why is that? The last two times we told you that they were going to get help from their relatives, friends, and children, you were delighted and said that nothing would happen. Why are you so shocked this time that they are going to reap the harvest by themselves and not rely on others?" The parents explained to them, "You don't understand. If they really rely on themselves, they will definitely do it. You cannot depend on others. Now that they have decided to be self-reliant, they will definitely do it. We will have no more food. We had better move to another farm." The moral of the story is: We spiritual practitioners should rely on ourselves rather than on others; the Quan Yin Method teaches us how to rely on ourselves. Even this body does not belong to us, so practicing with the body only is not ideal either. That is why I emphasize that we should practice with our inner, original Self, and remind our original Self to practice spiritually every day. Only this is the best way. This is why we derive so much benefit from practicing the Quan Yin Method. Back to contents ================================================================== Master Tells Jokes An Unsuccessful Lie Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Florida, USA, October 3, 1999 (Originally in Chinese) The phone rang, and the teacher answered it, saying, "Hello, may I help you?" A voice said from the other end, "Is this Mr. Hsieh? I would like to inform you that Tony cannot come to school today." The teacher asked, "Who is this, please?" "This is my father speaking, of course," came the answer. Too Diligent Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Florida, USA, October 4, 1999, (Originally in English) A shipment came into the port. It contained crystal being imported into the country. When the dock workers were unloading the cargo, their supervisor came by to check if everything was okay with the crystal. He saw a new packaging worker and patted his shoulder, saying, "Oh, you are doing well and I observe that you have done as I asked. You have stamped the top end of each box with 'This side up, handle with care.' This is very good. You are doing a very good job, and you haven't missed a box. You've stamped every box. I've noticed that. This is good, very good." "Yes, sir, I am a very, very diligent man, as I told you on my first day of work. I even stamped the bottom end of each box with the same mark. I stamped both ends, just to be sure." The Receipt's Purpose Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Florida, USA, October 4, 1999 (Originally in English) At the traffic fine office, the police handed a motorist a receipt for his traffic fine. The motorist must have been fined for speeding. He grumbled, "What am I supposed to do with this?" The clerk advised him, "Keep it. When you get four of these, you get a bicycle!" (All laugh.) By that time, he wouldn't be allowed to drive a car! This report generated widespread interest among fellow initiates, and in response to the overwhelming requests for more information, we conducted an exclusive interview with Mr. Baek, the MRT's inventor and head of the MRT lab. The following are excerpts from the interview. By the Korean News Group (Originally in Korean) Interviewer: Could you please tell us about the MRT? Baek: As I explained in our previous meeting, the human body has a magnetic field, also known as Chi or the aura. The MRT reads information in the human magnetic field, and its sensor detects precise data about life organisms up to very subtle vibrations. It can perform tests on anything that contains vibrational information on the human body, including hair, blood and urine. Therefore, the MRT is also known as the "chi information reading instrument." I: How was this instrument invented? Baek: I'm not an engineer, or a professional medical doctor. I'm just a spiritual practitioner, and have been practicing various spiritual methods for many years. After ten years of practice, I received inspiration for this instrument from the I-ching (Chinese Book of Changes). It suddenly dawned on me that the I-ching describes the universe as a digital 0/1 binary system, the only difference being that it uses the yin and yang (-, +) symbols. I also discovered that energy studies had devoted much less attention to polarity than to dynamics and vibrations. Therefore, I began to contemplate the possibility of integrating waveforms and polarity into the analysis of information on life energies. At the time, I knew nothing about engineering. But as people say, "Where there's a will, there's a way." I discussed my idea with some engineers and asked them to write an executable program for the functions I envisioned. I successfully invented this tester about five to six years ago, and it was released on the market about two years ago. I: Please elaborate on the specific principles underlying the MRT's functions. Baek: Before we discuss its functions, we must first understand two basic concepts: the body code (or hereditary nature) and the principles of the I-ching. The MRT can detect the inherent vibrational polarity (-, +) patterns in the human body and its system. Each person has a unique set of polarity patterns, and these yin and yang combinations are known as the body code, which is an inherited and constant quality. A reading and analysis of the polarity patterns of a person's Chi energy will reveal his or her genetic information. The concept of "reading polarity patterns" is based on the principles of the I-ching (i. e., the transformations of the hexagrams in the text during divination). Analyses can currently identify up to six levels and sixty-four classifications. The first stage or level of the analysis basically categorizes the human body as either yin or yang. At the second level, this yin or yang quality is classified into four patterns and further into eight patterns at the third level, sixteen at the fourth, and thirty-two at the fifth. This brings the total to sixty-four patterns at the sixth, or final level. In the I-ching, these patterns are known as the sixty-four hexagrams. Every human being corresponds to one of these sixty-four body codes. And the more comprehensive an analysis is, the more specific and accurate is the information obtained. I: Why are there only six levels and sixty-four patterns? Can there be more categories? Baek: The analytical system of the MRT is based on the theories of the I-ching, which delineates six levels and sixty-four combinations. I have tried repeatedly to raise the number of the levels, but have been able to support only the six-level framework. So I have tentatively concluded that classification is complete at the sixth level. If possible, I hope to develop finer and more sophisticated equipment that can analyze the human body code up to 64 X 64, a multiple of 64 categories. If this becomes possible, then perhaps a computer can be used to analyze the data automatically. We now have to rely on insightful human analysts to obtain accurate results. I: Please elaborate on the data analysis process. Baek: The MRT has 3,000 embedded codes. At the time of our last interview, we had about 2,300 codes, but we have since increased the number through ongoing research. I will briefly explain how the MRT functions. First, we determine which of the sixty-four body codes corresponds to that of the examinee. We have a comprehensive database of genetic, physical, and temperamental characteristics for each of the body codes and information on the weaker organs of the body that are more susceptible to diseases. Once we identify the corresponding body code, we analyze the normal/abnormal code to obtain information on any illness the examinee may have. We then compare this information to the MRT embedded code to determine possible health problems. Resonance occurs when two energy forms vibrate with the same frequency. So we test the normal human organ vibrational codes one by one against the examinee's test sample (hair or urine) and if resonance occurs, that means the organ is fine. But if it doesn't, that means the organ may not be functioning normally. When no resonance occurs, we input the specific diseased codes for that organ one by one. Through this process, we are able to locate which part of the body has been affected and by what kind of disease. Even if the symptoms are physically indiscernible, the illness can still be detected. Any micro abnormalities that cannot be diagnosed by other tests can be detected. For example, we can detect the presence of invisible accumulated poison and precisely measure the degree of heavy metal contamination of the body. The MRT has more extensive functions relating to the spiritual aspects of a subject, but we'll only discuss its medical features at this time. The MRT can distinguish a person's inherited physical qualities, special characteristics and weaknesses. It tells which diseases he or she is more susceptible to, so that precautions can be taken. Should an examinee be found to suffer from certain health problems or abnormal conditions, we provide more specific information about the causes and conditions of the disease. I: Once a disease is diagnosed, how is it treated? Baek: Even if you do not know you are ill, once abnormalities occur in your cells, or symptoms of any disease surface, we do what we can to make things right. We usually write a prescription for Chinese medicine and alternative medicine. We may also prescribe natural therapy or acupuncture, depending on the condition. Sometimes we prescribe special kinds of baths or saunas or physical exercises. And we generally suggest a vegetarian diet as the dietary cure. I: Master has told us that not everyone can operate this machine because it requires intense concentration. Baek: I was surprised that Master Ching Hai grasped this vital factor of the MRT so accurately. Although people can use it if they are well-trained, strong concentration is essential to obtaining an accurate and precise analysis. Very strong concentration is required to determine whether you resonate to an established code or not, without omitting subtle and fine vibrations. Before an analysis commences, the MRT sensor has to be fine-tuned to the analytical program and the state of the human analyst. This is because the frequencies of a living organism inevitably influence the subject, so the sensor has to be tuned to correspond to the frequency of the living organism. It must be set at that optimal point of complete resonance with the human body. That's the most difficult part and that's where the caliber of the analyst becomes important. A machine needs to be tuned only once a day, but the frequencies of a living organism change every second, as before and after a meal, or before and after meditation. Because any subtle changes in the analyst can affect the readings and analysis, the MRT must be tuned very often. Since it is difficult to tune the sensor when the mind is in a state of excitement or distraction, it is best to conduct the analysis when the mind is calm, as in meditation. Resonance occurs primarily in the form of light and sound. In order not to miss the very subtle vibrations, strong concentration is required. That's why the analyst's tranquility and concentration can affect the final analysis. I: Does resonance appear in the form of light and sound? Beak: Yes. Resonance occurs in the form of light or sound, and even graphics. But with this instrument, we basically listen to the sound. We have to listen carefully to both resonant and non-resonant sounds. I: You said that Master has a body code that enables immediate enlightenment. Baek: Yes. I was very astonished when I tested Her body code. It was exceptionally pure and clear in every aspect. Because it was so clean and clear without any negative factors, I further analyzed Her non-polar resonance. It was amazingly perfect. The highest degree of non-polar resonance means that all of Her chakras are opened and that She is in a constant state of enlightenment. But it doesn't mean that She has an exceptional body code. She is among the sixty-four patterns, each of which resonates to reveal certain information. Some categories, for example, are more likely to develop cancer, and some are more prone to suffer a stroke. There's also a category where the chakras are easily opened. I cannot provide the details of the test results, but Master corresponds to this type. So the body codes and degree of non-polar resonance are somewhat related, but totally different in concept. Body codes cannot be changed in one's lifetime because they are inherited genetic characteristics, but the level of the chakras can be developed and changed through spiritual practice. Of course, deviation may occur when machines are used to measure enlightenment. However, I want to emphasize that this spiritual aspect, which was once invisible to material science, can now be demonstrated, thereby extending the entire field of science. I: Thank you very much. What future prospects do you foresee for this machine? Baek: The MRT is a very advanced piece of equipment compared to other instruments. But I heard Master say that there are similar but more advanced machines on the more highly developed planets. I have mentioned several flaws in this machine. In the future, of course, we'll try to develop more sophisticated and advanced machines, like those on other planets. Truly advanced science can keep pace with the development of spiritual knowledge. I'm not a material scientist, but I consider myself a natural scientist, because I'm a practitioner. I'm very happy to have developed and to operate this equipment, for through these experiences, I have become more convinced of my spiritual realization. Basically, I believe that we don't invent things from nothing, but that we all came from enlightenment and already know everything. What remains for us to do is to remember our forgotten wisdom. (Originally in English) An initiate sister has a son who works in downtown New York. He commutes to his job from New Jersey and takes the subway at the former site of the World Trade Center around 9:00 AM. At about that time on September 11, two airplanes crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. When the sister saw news of the disaster on television, she knelt in front of Master's photo and prayed that her son would escape the calamity. Later her son called and said, "Mom, I am fine. I do not know why, but I got on the subway safely earlier this morning." This example shows that Master arranges everything and protects all Her disciples and their families! Another sister regularly takes a subway transfer in the area of the World Trade Center around 8:40-9:00 AM on her way to work. However on September 11, she took an earlier train and left the WTC 30 minutes early for no apparent reason. This was not her regular schedule because she usually could not get up when her alarm went off. When she saw the building explode from her office, she felt immense gratitude for Master's blessings, which helped her avoid a great calamity! Another Case By sister initiate Chou, New York, U.S.A. On the day of the 9-11 disaster in the U.S.A., I was late for work. I used to work on the 46th floor of the northern tower of the World Trade Center, and was usually in my office by 8:50AM. But that morning, I met a friend while jogging and we chatted for a few minutes, which made me late for work. When I stepped out of the subway, everyone was running away from the building. I saw smoke coming out of the building, and felt very lucky that I was not inside. Through Master's kind arrangement, I was late that day so that I could avoid the disaster. Master Had Already Made Arrangements! By sister initiate Chen, New York, U.S.A. Soon after the occurrence of the 911 events, members of the relief team formed by New York Center initiates found it necessary to fetch their rescue equipment immediately, in order to join the rescue frontline as soon as possible. However, there was a question in everyone's mind: "Since there are blockades everywhere in the city, how can we transport the equipment quickly?" But we had no need to worry! Master had already made arrangements! Originally, all the rescue equipment of the New York Center was stored in the warehouse of a fellow sister in China Town, the location of which was behind the blockaded WTC site. Several months earlier, this sister had sold the warehouse, and so all the rescue equipment was being temporarily stored in my garage. Coincidentally, the New York Rescue Team was using my house for its rescue operation. On September 12, 2001, when fellow initiates taking part in the rescue operation arrived, all the rescue equipment was readily available for use. If the equipment had still been in the warehouse near China Town, we would have had to wait at least a few days, until the blockades had been lifted, before being able to lay hands on it! The group has provided free hot vegetarian meals to rescue workers at Ground Zero since September 13. Pallets of fresh vegetables, fruit, coffee and juice crowd the front lawn of 50-year old Yengjen Chen. Portable bathrooms line the side of her house, and backyard tents act as makeshift kitchens, where meals are prepared and packaged. A steady stream of vans brings groceries and transports meal packs and workers to two food stands the group operates 24 hours a day at the rescue area's edge. A computer command center is set up on the house's second floor. From there, members communicate with the Supreme Master Ching Hai, leader of this global meditation organization that has collected more than $300,000 from its membership since the 9-11 event. Most of the money has been donated to the Red Cross and Salvation Army. It was at Supreme Master Ching Hai's behest that members drove from as far away as North Carolina to be involved in the relief effort. Chen's daughters, Alice, 15, and Audrey, 14, assist by cleaning and answering phones. Chen sees her daughters' involvement as part of the healing process. "They are shocked and very sad," Chen said, of her daughter's reactions to the 9-11 event. "Friends of theirs had parents who died. By helping in this work, they feel better." "Our hearts and our love go to the victims," said Zhihua Dong, 36, of Brooklyn, director of the relief effort. "We are brothers and sisters together, the whole Earth," said Huanchung Li, 49, of Boston, another organizer. Members of the rescue team work in 12-hour shifts, pausing only for group meditation sessions. New members continue to arrive; Li estimates that their number will soon rise to 100. By Alex Katz-staff writer [Oakland]The Golden Lotus restaurant in the downtown area donated its entire take from Monday--US$1,750--to the Red Cross. "We feel it's our duty. It's just our little part of showing our sympathy," said Nancy Dang, one of the owners of the Golden Lotus. Members of the Dang family, who opened the restaurant on the corner of 13th and Franklin streets in 1996, said they also donated another $1,500 to a religious organization serving food to volunteer workers in New York. The Dangs are followers of the religious group, the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association, which they describe as a meditation community whose members meditate for 2-1/2 hours every day. The Dangs said they regularly give donations to disaster relief funds around the world. Speaking through a translator, Nancy's father, Mr. Ut Dang said he identifies with the pain of the victims and their families, and said his donation "helps them feel less suffering and helps (me) feel less suffering also." Dang added he hopes the U.S. won't go to war, because "if a war is created, not only the enemy suffers, but we suffer." ================================================================== United Daily News, Keelung, Formosa Saturday, September 22, 2001 (Originally in Chinese) Heroes Behind the Rescue Work -- Risk Their Lives on a Typhoon Night Members of the Chinese Amphibious Rescue Society save many lives with their amphibious vehicle, but claim no credit despite gratitude from victims. [Reporter Li Hui-hsuan] "On the night of Typhoon Nari, our family of five was trapped near the Wutu freeway interchange. We waited for more than an hour before we finally saw a fireboat that saved our whole family." This is an account given by Yu Chien-chu of Hsi Tou Street. Lin Yu-ming of Tu Nan Street and six other family members were also saved just in time by a "waterborne fire engine," as they called it. This rescue vessel, described in many ways by different people, was actually an amphibious vehicle designed and manufactured by citizen Tseng An-ping. The victims of the Typhoon were saved in a rescue effort by the Chinese Amphibious Rescue Society. During the six hours of heaviest flooding, the Rescue Society saved over eighty trapped victims from the Baifu Community and Tu Nan Street, and settled some of them in the Hsi-an Sanatorium on Tu Nan Street, run by their principal instructor Lin Han-chang. Their heroic story spread rapidly in the affected area, and many victims were anxious to thank them. However, the rescuers claimed no credit for their efforts. Recalling the situation on that eventful night, a member of the rescue team thus described the "terrifying waves in a stormy sea": Even then, they were willing to stake their lives and take the risk. A team member narrated what he saw as follows: "A mother and her daughter stood on elevated ground; one of them was pregnant. We quickly pulled them into the vehicle and sent them to the Miners' Hospital as soon as possible. Following the beam of our spotlight, we saw a white helmet, a sign that someone might be trapped. We looked around and saw a tall man immersed in water up to his chin and clinging to the eaves of a house. Staying close to him was a black dog, standing on a piece of floating timber. When our amphibious vehicle drove toward them, radiant joy appeared in their previously desperate eyes. Another team member recalled hearing someone yell, "Hey! There is someone here!" But the voice sounded like that of a wailing ghost. Some victims sent out very dim torchlights in the hope of getting help. In a makeshift sheet--metal house, the water was only one foot from the ceiling, and there were five persons trapped inside. The rescue team members first secured themselves with ropes, then dove through the water into the house, and persuaded the victims to hold their breath and dive into the water with their eyes closed. That was how they were saved. A pregnant woman carrying a child on her back was trapped on the second floor of a house, and was about to be immersed in the flood water. Four or five rescue team members lined up as though they climbed a wall to save the pregnant woman and her child. Other victims looking on were horrified to see their dangerous action. When the rescuers finally succeeded, a loud round of encouraging applause broke out from the onlookers. Members of the Rescue Society are fellow practitioners who follow Supreme Master Ching Hai. They raise their own funds and are fully equipped with rescue equipment. They have developed and trained themselves in a unique rescue method. Yet, when they appear at scenes of disasters, their performances prove that they are first class professional rescuers. I have also found that artists can be placed in many categories, according to their techniques of artistic interpretation and the materials they use. Each has his or her own artistic domain. But Supreme Master Ching Hai's Works are of a different variety. She has no inhibitions in Her choice of materials, such as oils and pastels. Neither is She bound by genres such as expressionism and impressionism. While artists usually paint to express their own view of art, Master paints to form bonds of affinity with the people. In Her paintings, one finds superb and outstanding techniques of expression that may not be easily understood. Many artists who depict nature limit their works to the illustration of grass, flowers and leaves, but the Supreme Master employs refined and intricate techniques, as She did in capturing the minute details of the wild grass seed head in "Simple Joy" and in using incredible methods of representation in "The Flower in the Heart Will Not Wither." Surprisingly, these two themes appear only once in Her paintings. Due to its simple yet profound nature, we can only say that Master's form of expression is an "Ability of the Buddha". Jesus Christ and Shakyamuni Buddha emphasized the importance of practicing unconditional love as the highest virtue in the pursuit of enlightenment. The Supreme Master Ching Hai brings "enlightenment through love" into visual discourse with Her disciples and the general public. She leaves a deep impression on the souls of those who appreciate Her paintings by giving life to Her vivid imagination and profound inner inspirations. The works of the Supreme Master Ching Hai have both a visible form and an invisible spiritual power because She is a highly developed spiritual person. You must have some degree of spiritual cultivation to experience the power of the Buddha, which is also called "blessing." Anyone, even a non-spiritual practitioner, can experience such blessing if he keeps his mind open and calm. *The author--brother Kim is a famous graphic designer and recipient of South Korea's Design Ambassador Award. In 1993, he was ranked among the world's top 54 graphic designers by the International Trademark Center. He writes an art column for the major Korean newspaper "The Joong Ang Ilbo."
