Establishing an Environmentally Sound
Vegetarian Community for the 21st Century

An inspirational talk to elevate environmental awareness. A demonstration of vegetarian cuisine.

[Taipei] In its February health seminar, our House of Loving Food in Taipei analyzed for its audience hazardous substances that could affect human health, including impure water, pesticides, detergents, food additives, and air pollutants. The seminar made the audience aware of the need to eliminate pollutants, conserve water, eat simple foods, and purchase environmentally sound products as much as possible. By doing so, we can contribute to the establishment of an environmentally sound community for the 21st century. At the seminar, the initiate owners of Tang Tang Vegetarian Restaurant demonstrated for the audience six easy-to-make and delicious vegetarian dishes.

Landscape Maintenance at Ilan Center

Initiates work together, cutting grass and planting trees along the hillside at Ilan Center.

[Ilan] The Ilan Center, located on the eastern coast of Formosa, rises like a paradise amidst the billowing clouds and hazy mists. When this vast expanse of land required spring-cleaning and maintenance, the Center arranged camping activities for this specific purpose at the end of February.

It was mid-winter and a frigid continental air mass was passing through the region. Those of us who are accustomed to the warm weather could not quickly adapt to the thick fog and endless drizzle, accompanied by occasional gusts of chilly winds. However, the motivating force of love pushed us to work more diligently than usual. We meditated, cut grass, loosened the soil and planted trees to keep our bodies warm. As we worked our way up the hill at the Center, we had to hang on tightly with both hands and help each other over the steep incline near the hilltop. The grounds were slippery and we had a hard time keeping ourselves balanced. During the descent, we virtually rolled down the hill. By the end of the activity, those of us who normally did little hillside trekking had such sore legs that we could barely walk. Yet, this did not diminish the contentment and inner satisfaction we felt.

The most wonderful and enjoyable part of the trip was basking by the fire at night. The twinkling lights from Ilan were beautiful from afar. Many brothers and sisters meditated by the fireside till daybreak, while some braved the cold winds to venture into the dark. The two days of activities were indeed an unforgettable experience for all of us.

Spiritual Awakening

A seminar featuring Master's videotaped lectures held in Stockholm, Sweden. Among the guests, most had already had some spiritual experience.

[Stockholm] Fellow initiates from Sweden hosted a seminar on December 13, 1998, featuring Master's videotaped lectures. The venue was in an education center in downtown Stockholm. God's love permeated the event. Several days before the seminar local initiates went to the offices of "Daily News" and "Swedish Daily News," the largest newspapers in Sweden, to print an advertisement about the seminar. As soon as the ad was printed, people began to call, asking about the seminar and how to learn the Quan Yin Method of meditation. The day we went to the Stockholm Subway Stations to distribute fliers was also the day of the Annual Nobel Prize Ceremony. As it was a grand occasion, crowds arrived in waves, which kept our fellow initiates busy. At times, people even had to line up to receive a flyer.

Some people requested initiation into the Quan Yin Method even at the beginning of the seminar, as they had long been informed of this wondrous Method and known that it can bring them wisdom and happiness through enlightenment. A guest from Finland saw light radiating from the Quan Yin messenger during the seminar, and immediately asked for initiation. Even the disciples radiate light, so one can imagine how great their Master must be. The earnest guests asked many spiritual questions. Most of them had already had some spiritual experience; therefore they understood that the Quan Yin Method can truly bring them immediate enlightenment. When the time was up, no one wanted to leave the venue and many purchased Master's books and videotapes. More than half of the guests requested initiation or to learn the Convenient Method. Because so many longing souls had been awaiting Master's arrival, it had made the seminar a most fruitful one.

Absolute Concentration

Spiritual Interlude

By brother Park, Kwang-ho
Inchon, Korea (Originally in Korean)

Since being initiated, I have had numerous inner and outer experiences. Many times, Master has made use of my dreams to teach me lessons. For example, in dreams I learned the mathematical formulas of the universe perfectly; however, I couldn't remember them clearly when I woke up. In my dreams, I also have seen my previous lives and Master. These experiences have gradually transformed me.

One day, when driving my car, I suddenly found that I could concentrate on my wisdom eye. I felt something very new, and began to practice concentrating all my consciousness on my wisdom eye, even while my physical eyes were open. It took about two years to get used to it, but now I can concentrate on my wisdom eye and recite the Holy Names while doing my daily work, although, I still cannot do it when sleeping. I have discovered that while having a conversation by looking at the wisdom eye of others, I can see they are also very beautiful souls.

Seeing a Buddha

Master's Wonders
height="60"> >

About one or two months ago, I had a dream in which Master was dressed gracefully and walking up through a crowd that lined Her path. Her face looked very rosy, but I didn't know why. In the dream, I was leaning on one side of Master's car. Holding my chin in my hands, I looked at Master and pondered: "Master, why is your face so rosy?" When I woke up from the dream, I still could not answer this question. As time went by, the question faded from my mind. Nevertheless, having dreamt of Master made me feel contented, and sweetened my life.

In February, I went to Florida, USA. There I finally saw Master, whom I hadn't been able to see for a long time. Thank God for fulfilling my longing. That night, Master was dressed beautifully. Oh, my God! Was that the manifestation of Master that had come into my dream one or two months earlier with the same attire? I couldn't believe it! Then my memory brought back to me the same unanswered question: "Why did Master's face look so rosy in my dream?"

On Lunar New Year's Eve, I worked as one of the kitchen staff. We concentrated on making rice dumplings, leaving no room for me to think about other things, though the red color of the dumplings seemed to remind me of something. On New Year's Day, Master invited all the working staff members to a dinner and asked the kitchen staff to prepare more rice dumplings. When rolling the red dumplings (which symbolize family reunion), the image of red envelopes (which symbolize luck and prosperity in the New Year) also came to my mind. As I continued to roll the red dumplings, I found the answer to my question in my hands.

Master's Wonders height="183"> >

In August of 1997, my wife (a sister initiate) and I were suddenly inspired to explore the mountain area northeast of Mount Fang. Each time we passed by the mountain on the way to Taitung, off the eastern coast of Formosa, its majestic appearance and thick green foliage would captivate us. We wondered what wonderful scenery might be concealed beyond the mountain.

On that adventurous day, my wife and I set out on my motorbike. We reached a big valley, which happened to have been the riverbed of a stream that had dried up. The valley was rough and uneven, being covered with rocks and little bushes of all sizes. My 125-cc motorbike could hardly move on that rugged terrain. I could only choose to ride slowly on a more even track. After about an hour, the motorbike suddenly shook vigorously so we stopped to have a look. The front tire was punctured!

"This is unfortunate! What should we do?" my wife asked me worriedly. I shook my head, as I had no idea either. The sun was very hot and we were wet with perspiration. It was almost noon, so we put down the motorbike and found a cool place to have lunch and a rest. During lunch an idea suddenly crossed my mind: "Why don't we pray to Master for help? When we had run into trouble before, hadn't we always prayed to Master, and our problems were solved?"

After our prayer, I took a nap. We then pushed the bike forward on the rocky riverbed and switched on the engine for some auxiliary power. About a hundred meters later my wife and I were panting with exhaustion. After sitting down for a rest beneath a big tree, we went back to work, aiming for another big tree about one to two hundred meters ahead. When we reached this second target, we sat down again and ate some of the sugarcane that we had brought with us.

Just as we were beginning to bite down on the sugarcane, we heard the rumbling sound of a car approaching from the northeast. We sprung to our feet and looked around us. A small truck was moving slowly in our direction. It came to a halt right in front of us. The driver was a member of one of the indigenous tribes. Sitting beside him was a woman, probably his wife. "Is your motorbike kaput?" He asked.

"Yes. That 's right!" I answered promptly. "We were anxiously hoping that someone would come to help us!"

"So, indeed it's true," he said softly to himself. Then he turned towards us and said, "All right, let me get you out of here."

Overjoyed, we quickly tried to lift the bike onto the truck, but it was too heavy. How could we lift it up? Just as we were perplexed by this new problem, our indigenous friend cleared some things away on the truck and pushed a button. Suddenly the carriage started to incline backward. When the vehicle was steady he told me to switch on the engine of the bike. With his help, we easily pushed the bike onto the truck then secured it with ropes.

The truck moved slowly and shakily while I kept my motorbike steady. Questions arose in my mind to which I could not find the answers. What did the indigenous man mean by the words " So indeed it is true" when he first saw us? Such well-equipped and convenient trucks are scarce and why had he suddenly appeared in such a remote mountain area, just when we were desperate for help? When he first saw us, we were taking a rest and eating sugarcane under a tree and our motorbike looked brand new. How did he know that it was not working? I decided to ask him for the answers to my questions at a later time!

After about an hour, we reached a garage by the Ping-ER Highway. While the technician was repairing the punctured tire, I took the indigenous man to one side and asked him quietly, "My dear friend, just then when you met us, I think I heard you say 'Indeed it's true'. Can you tell me what you meant by that? How did you know that our motorbike needed repair and we needed help?"

He told me a story, "My wife and I were near an upper stream on Mount Fang. We seemed to hear a voice say, 'A couple has a punctured tire. They are stuck and need help. They are now waiting anxiously beneath the shade of a tree. When you are on your way home, please drive them out of the mountain.' Though somewhat skeptical, we immediately packed our things and drove down to see whether the message was true. Indeed it was, since we found you there."

"Oh, I see," I said as I nodded and patted him on the shoulder. "We are extremely grateful to you and your wife. You are really messengers sent by God. Without your timely help, I don't know how we could have gotten back from there!"

As I thanked him, I was so emotionally moved within that I could barely hold back my tears. Deep down in my heart, I prayed to heaven, "We thank You so much, Master."

A Spring Breeze
Brings New Life

By LA News Group, U.S.A. (Originally in English)

>

On March 21, 1999, after the early morning group meditation session, fellow initiates at the L. A. Center were delightfully surprised by an unexpected visit from Master. Just coming out of samadhi, some practitioners thought they were in a dream when they saw Her.

Wearing casual white pants and shoes and a taupe colored sweater, Master looked relaxed and joyful. Walking around, She said "Hi" to the disciples and all were overjoyed by this surprise visit on such a beautiful spring day.

Soon, everyone gathered at the foot of the stairs leading to the meditation hall. Master lovingly comforted an elderly practitioner who was unable to move easily without a wheelchair. They sat side by side and Master chatted with her in Au Lacese for quite a while. She joked with the lady and asked her about her Buddhist practice, while much of the time the lady folded her hands as a show of respect to Master. Then, Master put Her own earrings on the venerable woman, who responded with a very contented look. People in the crowd smiled with understanding.

Master then patiently answered questions about meditation practice and life's problems. One new disciple told Master that her job involved taking care of seriously sick infants, many of whom die. However, since her initiation, no babies have died during her shift.

Someone else mentioned that he had difficulty meditating. Master recommended adding one more minute of meditation each day to his practice. Sometimes we are very tired, because in this life we work very hard. We have headaches, responsibilities and pressure from business, associates, friends, and family. Then we just sit there and the body just does not listen because it is so worn out. We live with all kinds of pressures, so we should take it easy on ourselves.

"If you're too tired, drink something that calms you down, like some tea; or rest first, until you feel better; or go for a walk in the fresh air, and then come back and sit again. If after thirty minutes you're finished, and you cannot sit any more, then get up and go for a walk, listen to music, or do something that you like. Later come back and sit again, thus adding up to a full session."

"So sometimes if you don't meditate well or have problems, it might not be all your fault. If you check everything and you feel you're all right spiritually; and you're a good vegetarian, you usually meditate well and your faith is still strong, then someone near you or someone you're thinking of may be affecting you. Or perhaps a deceased person or a relative far away from you is having trouble, and because of your spiritual sympathy, you automatically share the burden of that person, so your spiritual practice is slowed down a little; but don't worry. Or if you feel fed up and don't want to meditate, don't meditate. The next time, the next day, you can meditate. Or just meditate a little bit and then go to sleep and when you wake up and you want to meditate more, do it. Take it easy, take your time and live forever."

"We cannot regress. We can only progress slowly or quickly. But if we do not meditate well, we have a less smooth life. We have more problems, and that's how we come to appreciate our spiritual power inside when we do meditate. When we meditate more, we remember God more and our lives become better. If we meditate a lot more, we uplift ourselves to a higher level, and if we don't meditate, we sink down to a lower level, or we stay in the middle, and don't experience a higher, smoother life, a better situation. When we are on the lower level, we sink, and many bad things come upon us, because we are in a bad area."

When asked how to balance spiritual practice and daily life, Master delivered an excellent speech, stating that She now lives by Herself, without the help of attendants and must do everything on Her own. She has thus learned more about our lives and the hardships of worldly living. Master said: "It is so hard so that we can understand what to do, and we can become stronger so that we overcome it. So we should not let the world pull us down, but instead rise above it, and that's how we become strong. We have the Master inside, and we have all the angels standing by waiting to help us. We must never ever forget that, because you are what you think. You get what you believe."

"So just believe in yourself strongly, and you can do anything you want. It's just that the world always tries to pull you down and tell you that you're weak, you're bad, you can't make it, you're stupid and so on. Try not to think that way, and instead think more positively. Believe in yourself, because the Master is always there for you. You have to call for help at any time. Don't forget that. Later on, you will know that the Master is your own self, your own strength, and you will have no fear, and no problems."

Master also talked about how difficult it is to always remember how great we are. Even She cannot always remember Her own greatness. Jokingly, She said that if She were caught by the police for speeding, She would be scared too. She said: "You are very great, but when you're working, when you're doing things, when you're under pressure, you don't remember it, but that's all right, as long as you remember it sometimes. That is OK; it's better than never remembering. In your subconscious, you still know that you are the Master, you are God, you are one with God. We are God's children at least, but when you're doing things in everyday life, you can't remember all the time. Then it's OK. Besides, it's OK not to remember. If we remember all the time that we are God's children, we wouldn't want to live here anymore. We're working like mad for just a few dollars an hour, and we are God's children! What a ridiculous conflict. So it's OK if we don't remember."

"Don't wish to die early, since it's also fun to stay here. Just hang around, and take it easy, one day at a time, and stay in the present moment, always in the present. Because you think too much, you get into trouble. 'Oh, what will happen tomorrow, because yesterday was terrible, and the day before it was even worse?' Don't think too much. Take one day at a time, one minute at a time, and everything else will be OK. As long as you always concentrate on the present, everything else works out perfectly. You give life a chance to work out for you. Give the Master Power a chance to arrange things for you. Because if you think a certain way, everything you think about will come true, and the Master can not help you if you think that way, and want it that way. Don't bother about it, live one minute at a time, do whatever is in front of you at the moment, and do not bother about the rest, because we can't have it. The past is gone, and the future has not come yet, so why worry, because it doesn't make any difference." Master said that we should just live one day at a time, one minute at a time, and our lives will be much simpler, we'll save ourselves a lot of energy, and we'll live longer, if we want to.

Master said not to worry if we have problems. She has run into many difficulties, not Her own problems, because She doesn't have any, but problems that arise because She is related to us. So our problems become Her problems. For example, when people need Her, She has to run, but each time She goes through the airport, Her heart skips a beat. Sometimes going through customs can be a very trying situation! With God's blessing, it will be better for us in the near future!

So even when She just comes to see us, just to do good things, She has to go through a lot of trouble. Even if She applies for permanent residency in the U.S., there are many conditions, such as having to prove She is a good citizen. She has to provide proof of Her income and bank account; even if She wants to open a bank account, She has to have references from other banks. She had nothing, because She has never used Her name to open a bank account. She never needed to worry about money in the past. So Master has to come and go. But She doesn't mind all these things.

We all know that a very enlightened and highly spiritually developed Master will bring a great deal of blessing to any country where She stays. For example, when Master stays in the U.S.A. for a longer time than usual, America's economy becomes better. Although it's the truth, such an abstract thing cannot always be proved. We hope that every country can cherish the Light that an enlightened Master brings to the world. We hope also that Her wish that there be no frontiers between nations will be realized very soon.

During Her speech, Master encouraged everyone to be happy. "Whatever situation we are in, we are really lucky. Think of all the people who don't have what we have. Spiritual wealth is the best thing that we can possess and we have it. We'll never lose it. How many people out there do not know this, suffer very much, and don't know where to turn? When they pray to God, God doesn't answer them because they aren't connected. Their telephones are cut off. But when we pray we get a response, although we have to suffer sometimes due to fixed karma that we chose before we came here. We chose to be like this, and we chose to be like that. It's our noble choice so we shouldn't think that we are suffering, but doing our duty. We should think that we are training ourselves in our situation to be stronger, better, more noble individuals. It's a blessing to be anything. Look at Jesus; at the most tragic moment of His life, He still blessed people. He didn't curse them, and He didn't feel sorry for Himself. He said, "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do." And He also said, "Father, how You glorify me." He still remembered God in the most painful moment of His life.

Master's "Will Power" is worthy to be followed as an example. Sometimes Her legs felt bad, and She has to plead with them, "Please, I still need you, so come on. We can go on holiday together when we are in the grave." She tells them, "We have a long time to rest, so don't worry now, just go on working." Then, they come back to life. Or sometimes Her body is very tired and wants to sleep very much. But She has things to do, so She says to Her body, "Don't worry. We will rest for a long time in the grave later on. Now get on with it."

Master also mentioned that we're stepping into the 21st century soon. There are many technologies that are being developed now in the world. So we have to not only be involved with them, but we have to go with the flow of the world.

Master reminded us once again that we should put a note-pad beside us while meditating. Even during sleep, She wakes up a lot of the time just to write down notes about what She has to do, because if we don't write these things down, we'll forget them very soon. We don't have time to remember everything.

Later on, Master met two teenage boys who knew how to "break dance" and She asked them to teach Her. Master learned several movements from them. Still new to this field, She did amazingly well. Watching a living Buddha "break dancing" with two "cool" teenagers we felt that Master is really very fascinating! She commented that dancing works, because it expends energy and gets rid of frustrations. This is better than fighting or causing trouble.

After having lunch with several lucky disciples, Master left while the rest of us meditated. She permitted an initiation for that day, and excited mothers brought their children for half initiation, and others who were practicing the Convenient Method came for full initiation. The blessing power was very strong during the initiation and disciples swayed like flowers in a gentle breeze. With the dawning of the Spring leading to the next millennium, Master blew a warm, pleasant breeze into the world, enabling the flower of life to bloom in everyone's heart.

A Vanity
is a Vanity!

By sister initiate Tena Norm, L. A. Center, USA (Originally in English) >

Recently, after the L A. Center's early morning group meditation session, local initiates had a very surprising and uplifting visit from Master on that beautiful spring day. Later, She even asked two teenage boys to teach Her a few "break dancing" steps and joyfully participated with them. Master said that "break dancing" burns up a lot of energy, rids the body of many frustrations and is much more positive than fighting or behaving violently. Once again, Master focused attention on an issue so that its positive side could be illuminated. Happily, this whole interaction between Master and Her disciples caused a chain reaction of thoughts that I believe are helping me to solve a problem in my own life.

When I got home from group meditation, an event that happened over twenty years ago came to mind. My father wanted me to read a Biblical passage in the Book of Ecclesiastes called "A Vanity is a Vanity." I thought, "Why does my father want me to read this passage? Does he think that I'm vain?" Once again, this passage came into my thoughts and was somehow synonymous with Master's message to the two teenage boys who taught Her how to "break dance." One may ask, "How does "break dancing" have anything to do with Ecclesiastes, a very heavy and dreary passage in the Bible?" I really did some serious contemplation about this question before Master's wisdom finally became clear to me.

The answer to the question deals with my "attachment to virtue". For most of my life, I have considered myself to be a very moral and upright person. I cannot lie, cheat or steal. However, in the process of living a moral life, I have often looked down upon "those people" who are not as moral or upright as I believe they should be. Although it may seem commendable to be a "good" person, this thought process has its negative side. As I began believing in my own goodness, I also began to separate myself from other people and became attached to my own virtue. By focusing on the negative habits of others, we momentarily feel better about ourselves. In the long run, however, this wreaks havoc when honestly dealing with human relationships. This attachment is also a very difficult habit to break.

Master has taught us that in order to reach the higher realms of consciousness, all of our attachments must be erased. But how, I asked myself, can I erase my attachment to virtue? Although it is easier to see the splinter in someone else's eye and avoid the forest in one's own eye, I have admitted to myself that I do have a problem in dealing with other people. Now that I have finally admitted to this problem however, where do I go for help?

Of course, the solution to all of life's problems is to meditate more and ask our inner Master for guidance! However, there are many other examples of where we can find Master's wisdom, in order to solve our own problems. All of Master's paintings have very significant names and we are attracted to different titles and compositions by our own affinity with them.

The many generations of Master's celestial jewelry collection have mysterious names that rival the jewelry itself for beauty. However, did you know that even the jewelry is able to help solve our problems? An example of this occurred during the past gathering in Florida for the Chinese Lunar New Year. I love most of Master's jewelry designs but one in particular really caught my attention. In Chinese, it is called Han Hai Dian Di, which means A Drop of the Ocean. I really love the name of this beautiful platinum design and the name reminded me of certain Chinese characters that I really like. More importantly, Master's jewelry allowed me to realize very deeply that we are all but drops in the ocean and that ocean is GOD! How can I look down upon another drop, when we are all the same?

Now that I look back at my life prior to following Master, I believe that my father must have wanted desperately to teach me these same lessons in life about attachment. He must have witnessed the impact of my not getting along with others. Although I am still a long way from taking the middle road, at least I've admitted to myself that I have a problem and have asked for help. Each step that I take will be one step closer to reaching my goal. Perhaps, my father is smiling down on me now because I am finally beginning to do something about these attachments. Yes Father, a VANITY is a VANITY after all!

Thank You Master!

Loving Angel's Gathering --
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
Annual Hollywood Gala

Report from Los Angeles, CA, U.S.A.

Danny Thomas, the founder of
Saint Jude Children's Research
Hospital, and children.

As a token of their appreciation for Supreme Master Ching Hai's generous contribution, St. Jude
Children's Research Hospital published Her charming photo in their 1999 special annual Hollywood Gala book.

The benefit concert, "One World... of Peace Through Music", is still resounding in the ears of all those who attended and continues to be a hot conversation piece among many people, who cannot stop discussing their experience at this memorable event. Even the National Vice President of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Tennessee, Jerry Chipman, said he had heard many great things about the concert and the wonderful contribution of Supreme Master Ching Hai to the children. Not only did audience members enjoy the grandness of the event, they were deeply touched by Master's love, grace and generous contribution to the two children's charities, Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital and Starlight Children's Foundation.

Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital is the world's premier center for treating and researching terminal childhood diseases. When it began, its founder was the then little-known, struggling entertainer - Danny Thomas. Shortly before World War II, Danny had reached a turning point in his life, and turned to St. Jude Thaddeus. Praying for guidance, he promised, "Show me my way in life, and I will build you a shrine..." Now his promise has been realized. The shrine is the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, which benefits many youngsters, and its cure rates for many so-called incurable diseases such as leukemia are quite high.

Through the concert, people had a chance to witness the benevolence of Master and got to know Her better. Thus, on March 4, 1999, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital invited Master to attend its 19th annual Hollywood gala at the exclusive Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. The National Executive Director of St. Jude Children's Hospital, Richard Shadyac, personally wrote a letter of invitation to our beloved Master to attend the gala. He was very excited and looked forward to the opportunity to meet Master in person after hearing of all the great work that She has done to benefit others.

At 7 p.m., the entrance to the Hilton began to fill up with numerous guests and VIP's dressed in their most formal attire, including the many celebrities who support this noble cause for the sake of children around the world. Among those attending the star-studded gala were Billy Bob Thornton (Sling Blade, Armageddon), Steven Seagal (Under Siege), Laura Dern (Jurassic Park), Jennifer Love Hewitt (Party of Five), Matt LeBlanc (Friends), and super model Cindy Crawford, to name just a few.

Supreme Master Ching Hai arrived at 7:30 p.m., wearing a simple, yet elegant white evening gown enhanced with a white shawl. As She walked down the red carpet to the VIP entrance, Mr. Shadyac stopped his conversation with his son, director/producer Tom Shadyac (Patch Adams, Liar Liar, The Nutty Professor) to greet Master and escort Her into the VIP room. He proudly introduced Her to many of his important friends such as former television talk show host, Phil Donahue; actress and wife of Phil Donahue, Marlo Thomas; St. Jude's regional director, Shoshana Grammer; Mike Driebe, the St. Jude representative who received the contribution from Supreme Master Ching Hai at the "One World... of Peace Through Music" concert; director/producer Tom Shadyac and others.

Following the reception was a dinner in the International Ballroom. For entertainment, the popular comedian Dennis Miller entertained guests with his funny social commentaries and legendary singer James Taylor performed all of the great hits he has produced through the years. During the dinner, Mr. Shadyac regularly visited Master's table to bring his friends and guests to introduce them to Her, and asked for permission to take pictures with Her. Although he was very busy attending to other guests, he took every opportunity to be near and speak with Master. He continuously complimented Master on Her beauty and graciousness. He introduced Phil Donahue to Master and praised Her as being a most compassionate and generous person.

Dr. Ching-Hon Pui, a brilliant medical scientist from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

After dinner, Mr. Shadyac invited Master to the celebrity party upstairs on the balcony, where a panoramic view of the whole city of Los Angeles could be enjoyed. While Master attended the party, many celebrities/VIPs came up to Her table to extend their warmest regards, and asked to take pictures with Her for souvenirs. Included in the list of VIPs and celebrities who spoke with Master were actor Steven Seagal and Arisa Wolf, film director/producer Georges Chamchoum, Judge Roy Paul, National Vice President working at St. Jude Jerry Chipman, St. Jude's Dr. Ching-Hon Pui (one of the brilliant scientists working at St. Jude), Tony, Terre, and Marlo Thomas (dinner co-chairs and the son and daughters of St. Jude founder, Danny Thomas), director/producer Tom Shadyac and his wife, Jennifer Shadyac. All of the VIPs and celebrities were captivated by Master's kindness and touched by Her sincerity. Tom Shadyac had a long and deep talk with Master about meditation and how it could improve his life.

During the course of their conversation, Steven Seagal and Arisa Wolf learned of Master's artistic talents. They admired the celestial jewelry Master has designed. Spontaneously, Master gave each of them a celestial jewelry ring. Amazingly, the rings fit them perfectly! Mr. Seagal received the men's Sun ring and Ms. Wolf received an SM ring. They were both in awe of Master's generosity. Master modestly responded, "They are just rocks," and told them that it gave Her the great joy and happiness to beautify the world through designing clothes and jewelry. Mr. Seagal and Ms. Wolf thanked Master again and again for Her love and kindness.

Everyone who came to speak with Master was deeply embraced by Her love. They did not want to end their engaging conversations with Her. Only when a new guest was introduced to Master were the conversations interrupted. Her gentleness and genuineness touched many hearts. The event's coordinator, Linda Levine, was so intrigued by Master's cordial personality and elegance that she enthusiastically brought her friends over to introduce them to Master. Jennifer Shadyac stated that meeting Master was indeed the best gift for her on that evening. The gala would not have been the same without Master. She felt very fortunate that Master stayed for the VIP post-reception party so she could have the chance to meet and converse with Master. "She is so charming, so sweet, and so beautiful!" Jennifer exclaimed. It was easy to see that everyone who was graced by Master's presence that evening was embraced by Her boundless love, kindness and gentleness.

Supreme Master Ching Hai, after having attended the St. Jude Hollywood Gala, and due to the sincerity of Hollywood stars with an inner longing for spiritual satisfaction, made special arrangements to return to Beverly Hills on Oscar Sunday, March 21, 1999, to attend an Oscar party, yet another star-studded event.

President of 21st Century Entertainment and Vice-President of Glendale Studios Edvard Akopyan attended the "One World... of Peace Through Music" Concert on December 18, 1998 at the Shrine Auditorium. Thoroughly impressed by the beautiful compositions inspired by Supreme Master Ching Hai's poetry and the silent work She has done for humankind throughout the years, Mr. Akopyan took the opportunity to invite Supreme Master Ching Hai as his special guest to the Oscar party held at The Beverly Hills Hotel in the heart of Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard.

This 8th annual event, "Night of 100 Stars Gala", is held to support Martin Scorsese's Film Preservation Foundation, which is committed to preserving the nation's motion picture history for future generations to enjoy the wonderful entertainment that films provide. The board members presently also include the following well-respected and prestigious directors: Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Woody Allen, Francis Ford Coppola, Stanley Kubrick, George Lucas, Robert Redford, and Sydney Pollack.

Over 150 Hollywood stars, including past Oscar winners and nominees, attended to pay tribute to all those who had received awards and were honored at the Academy Awards ceremony and support the film foundation. Those given the celebrity red carpet treatment included: Renowned Hollywood actor and Oscar nominee Gary Busey (Point Break, Under Siege), singer Michael Bolton (Go the Distance, When a Man Loves a Woman), popular television actor Scott Baio (Happy Days, Charles in Charge), well-known actress, Jane Seymour (Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, James Bond: Live and Let Die), legendary actor, Oscar winner and multi-nominee Martin Landau (Ed Wood, Cleopatra, The X-Files-Fight the Future), actress and wife of radio personality Casey Kasem, Jean Kasem, acclaimed actor, Oscar winner and multi-nominee Maximillian Schell (Deep Impact, The Chosen), model and actress Anna Nicole Smith and many more.

At 4:30 p.m. celebrities and special guests began arriving. As each limo drove up to the red carpet, the celebrities stepped out to greet the awaiting fans and media. The crowd suddenly shifted its center of focus as it spotted a brand new white stretch limousine pulling up to the red carpet. People were wondering who the superstar inside would be this time. The limo slowly rolled to a stop as the chauffeur promptly approached the luxury car to open the door. Gently stepping out, the beautiful and petite woman, simply dressed in white with a complementing white shawl, captured the attention of the cameras and video crews, as well as the reporters lined up alongside the red carpet. Mr. Akopyan walked forward to greet Master and introduced his lovely special guest to his wife, Diane, and attorney, Vladimir Khiterer. Then, he escorted Her to the Crystal Ballroom where the dinner took place. As they made their way down the red carpet, Supreme Master Ching Hai granted an interview at the request of Cookie Cota, a reporter from Malibu TV.

On the way into the ballroom, Norby Walters, event producer and well-known super agent for Norby Walters/Walters Entertainment, introduced himself to Her. Besides Norby Walters, throughout the evening many celebrities made special visits to Supreme Master Ching Hai's table to meet Her. The first to have the honor of meeting Supreme Master Ching Hai was Stella Stevens, a famous actress known for her roles in The Poseidon Adventure with Gene Hackman, Girls! Girls! Girls! with Elvis Presley, and many more. She commented on how nice and classic Supreme Master Ching Hai looked, and Master modestly responded, "In front of all the movie stars, I have to be simple." Stella remarked, "Simplicity is the essence of style!"

Next was not a movie star but one who has pioneered to the stars, Buzz Aldrin, one of the first astronauts to set foot on the moon, and his charming wife, Lois. They enjoyed a lengthy conversation with Master. Before leaving, they both gave Her a warm hug. Others who had the opportunity to speak with Supreme Master Ching Hai were actor David Carradine (Kung Fu, The Long Riders), perhaps the most famous in the world for martial arts aside from Bruce Lee; Oscar nominated actor Tony Curtis (Some Like it Hot, The Defiant Ones) who has worked with Marilyn Monroe and Sydney Poitier; Oscar winner and multi-nominee Rod Steiger (On the Waterfront, In the Heat of the Night) who has collaborated with such legends as Marlon Brando and Humphrey Bogart; distinguished Hollywood actor Kevin McCarthy (Death of a Salesman, Twilight Zone: The Movie); well-recognized actor Henry Silva (White Fang to the Rescue, Above the Law); legendary actress/director of the silver screen and multi-Oscar nominee Diane Ladd (Wild at Heart, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore), who won an Academy Award nomination for her role in Rambling Rose with daughter, Laura Dern (Jurassic Park); Peter Nygard, international fashion designer and underwriter of this Oscar gala; famed singer and actress Connie Stevens (Hawaiian Eye, producer of A Healing, performed for U.S. Presidents at the White House, and sang on tour with Bob Hope during the Vietnam War); popular Hollywood actor Robert Davi (James Bond: License to Kill, Profiler); talented actor Mark Hamill (Star Wars, Return of the Jedi, The Empire Strikes Back); singer and actress Babydol; Mutar the Human Twister (international celebrity shown on Channel 11 TV's Guinness Records show for the amazing tricks he can do with his body); famous actor Vincent Schiavelli (Ghost, Batman Returns, James Bond: Tomorrow Never Dies), Oscar Nominated Actress Karen Black (Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces), Dan Sefton, Hollywood screenwriter and columnist for The Tolucan Times; Ken Huthmaker from Entertainment Sports Television and many more. Diane, Mr. Akopyan's wife, as well as the other guests seated at Supreme Master Ching Hai's table, expressed that it truly was their honor to have had the company of Supreme Master Ching Hai that evening.

Many people were curious as to who Supreme Master Ching Hai was and why all the superstars were coming over to personally visit Her. Everywhere Supreme Master Ching Hai went, there was an entourage of cameramen, video crews, and escorts. People were asking each other, "Who is this charming lady? Is She a movie star?" They were even more impressed after discovering that She is not only a humanitarian touching the hearts of millions, but also a world-renowned meditation teacher helping others change for the better. People were also in awe of Her superb talents as an artist, recognized and respected for Her paintings, fashion designs, and jewelry designs.

Everyone who met Master was touched by and admired Her for Her noble work. As Mr. Akopyan answered in an interview, "She explains that we have to live in love and peace. She exemplifies the ideal of One World." All the guests expressed that it was their honor and pleasure to have met Supreme Master Ching Hai. She is a true gem to be treasured in this world.

Aphorisms

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai (Originally in Chinese)

Fearlessness means ignoring the extent of our fear, our fearful minds and cowardly areas, and just doing whatever we need to do.

When we meditate, if we focus our attention completely on one point and then place before it any problems we have, they will be solved immediately.

You ought to be truthful to yourself under any circumstances.

The more superior the spiritual practice is, the simpler it will be.

Why are the Enlightened Masters capable of doing anything? It is because They are always in a state of concentration, focusing Their acts, speech and thoughts on whatever They are doing, and at the same time being omnipresent.

As spiritual practitioners, we need to be cautious and distinguish facts from non-facts clearly. If we really do not understand, then we should refrain from thinking too much. Possibly we will understand a few days later.

The Best Things in the Evening of
"One World... of Peace Through Music"
Hosted by The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association
Last Christmas at the Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles

By Musician Le Uyen Phuong
(Originally in Au Lac Language)

In the closing days of 1998, a spectacular musical gala was held at the prestigious Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Although I am only an ordinary music fan, I believe this event was one of the finest musical productions not only of 1998, but also of the years that marked the growth of musical and arts performing abroad.

This great event was made possible by the meticulous arrangement of director Steven Cooper and Dr. Larry M. Timm. On-stage appearances were made by some of the most recognizable figures in the movie industry, such as Debbie Reynolds, who has starred in over 30 movies, and appeared in two Broadway shows and numerous television productions, along with John Moschitta, Jr. who set the world record for fast talking, 586 words per minute. The musical program was orchestrated by three of the most sought-after conductors in Hollywood: Bill Conti, George Thatcher, and Peter Boyer. These Oscar Award winning composer/conductors appeared on-stage one by one to conduct a symphony orchestra of 60 top musicians. They performed along with the legendary soprano voices of Anne Marie Ketchum, Kerry Walsh, and Mel Kubik, as well as the harmonious voices of the Pasadena Boys Choir.

We must also mention the spectacular and highly enthusiastic performance of the Irish band Gaelic Storm, which performed magnificently in the movie "Titanic"; as well as that of the Beach Boys Family & Friends, who made their debut with songs popularized by the original Beach Boys throughout the decades.

A most lavish program, the musical gala at the Shrine Auditorium attracted an audience of 6,000 people from around the world. With little effort, one could easily imagine how costly the program was.

The most remarkable quality of the show lay in the presentation of its creator's abilities. With respect to musical attributes, it was an event that utilized the most that Hollywood has to offer to profoundly reveal the skill of its creator: Poet Supreme Master Ching Hai.

"The Prince," a poem by Supreme Master Ching Hai, was set to music by composer/conductor Maria Newman, daughter of nine- time Oscar Award winning composer/conductor Alfred Newman, and interpreted through the soprano voice of Anne Marie Ketchum. Then "Love Melody IV," another poem by Supreme Master Ching Hai, arranged for music by Peter Boyer, was sung by Kerry Walsh, creating a mysterious atmosphere that seemed to go beyond the limits of time. These songs expressed the harmonious union of different sentiments within a common musical feeling. The audience's awareness was concentrated on the music, which seemed to embrace everything in its arms.

Then came "The Peace Seeker," which was subdivided into five separate sections: "Winter Afternoon," "Cannot Do A Thing With My Heart," "He Couldn't Buy," "Farewell Song," and "Like A Bird," musical settings of poems by Supreme Master Ching Hai by the Oscar Award winning composer/conductor Fred Karlin. This piece was performed by Mel Kubik, accompanied by Nicole Campbell, Stevie Mercer and the Pasadena Boys Choir with background music provided by a 60-piece symphony orchestra conducted by Peter Boyer. This was a brief musical depiction of Supreme Master Ching Hai's historic achievements in Her journey to seek perfect enlightenment. Fred Karlin is indeed a highly talented composer with a profound understanding of the poetic and artistic creations of Supreme Master Ching Hai. One could feel the transformations, the upheavals, and the sudden change in consciousness of the spiritual practitioner in an ultimate and final meeting, not only with the light of heaven, but with the freedom of a bird that went beyond all boundaries. Again, music embraced all in its loving arms.

The concert, which focused the energies of many musical talents, was indeed one that gathered the best and most successful that Hollywood could offer in the fields of music and film. They included outstanding musical and movie performers of recent decades, such as Academy Award winning composer/conductor Bill Conti, author of "For Your Eyes Only," which reached record sales of eight million copies; Fred Karlin, author of "For All We Know," sung by the Carpenters, for which he won an Oscar for Best Song; Peter Boyer, composer of the score for the film "Covenant"; and George Thatcher, author of "Send Me a Lover," recorded by Celine Dione and Tayler Dayne, which became a top hit single in Billboard Magazine and Radio and Record. In addition, participants included Debbie Reynolds, John Moschitta, Jr., Maria Newman, Gaelic Storm, Kerry Walsh, Mel Kubik, Anne Marie Ketchum, Jerome Smith, Nicole Campbell, Steven Cooper, Dr. Larry M. Timm, the Pasadena Boys Choir, and especially, Poet Supreme Master Ching Hai, who has become popular through her highly creative poems, paintings, music, clothing designs and charitable activities.

The proceeds of this highly successful and internationally acclaimed fund raising gala were given to The Starlight Children's Foundation and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Their representatives received checks totaling $250,000 from the hand of Poet Supreme Master Ching Hai to help children with terminal diseases and cancer around the world.

This most perfectly arranged and flawless musical gala was professionally carried out on a grand scale. Its sets were constructed through the experiences and skill of Hollywood stage decorators and coordinators. The construction of the program sets could not have been made possible without the meticulous application of Hollywood time-honored stage-building formulas. Although not the highlight of the event, they were nonetheless easily and flawlessly created by well- equipped Hollywood professionals.

The performance was excellent. To my knowledge, it was the first time that messages from a spiritual Master were conveyed through the music of a Hollywood symphony orchestra, being successfully rendered by Hollywood sound legends to spread their creator's noble ideals to the public, which was indeed an extraordinary act. To those who are familiar with Hollywood's tricks of the trade, this was definitely a miracle.

Moreover, it was the first time I had ever seen an Au Lacese Master with a petite physical appearance dressed in a white evening gown singing Her own song in front of a great symphony orchestra on a grand stage frequented by Hollywood celebrities. This image was something unique and mysterious, and created a profound, unforgettable and thoughtful impression in the audience. It was the first time that I and the other 6,000 audience members had had an opportunity to see a short video lecture about the Supreme Master's loving compassion and devoted help to disaster victims. Despite its brief duration of less than five minutes, the time used for presenting the two checks totaling $250,000 to children's charities truly conveyed to the audience the care and sharing, full of human love and compassion, that is essential for people during times of disaster and disability in our world. It was the first time that an event of such great magnitude, even by Hollywood standards, was carried out by a spiritual organization, namely, the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association, to introduce and help execute its charitable deeds.

In short, to me this was a unique phenomenon of 1998, not only in the field of the arts, but also in conveying a specific spiritual meaning. It is certain that people will talk more about this event, not so much of its level of quality, but rather its incredible planning and organization. With all the abilities and intelligence employed, the performance seemed miraculous. It is certain that people will speculate more about these things, however, since the event has already taken place, nothing can be done to change it. The four hour concert on the stage of the Shrine Auditorium, with its bright lights, reverberating sounds and colorful settings, was recorded on tape, which may be used as a reference for those who are inquisitive about that wonderful musical evening.

I pray that indeed there will be One World... of Peace Through Music, and also a peaceful world through people's generosity, understanding, compassion, and sharing.

The Peace Seeker

Symphonic Portrait
Lyrics by Supreme Master Ching Hai

Music Composed by Fred Karlin

Once upon a time,
A true peace lover wandered around the many worlds
In search of eternal happiness.
She walked over the face of the Earth, the suns,
The moons and the clouds.
At last she found,
That it was all the while hidden in her very heart.
Then she sat down,
And was about to enjoy the new found Bliss,
But suddenly she looked down
And saw countless beings were still groveling in darkness,
For they were searching for happiness without.
Just like her before, erring over millions of ages.
Her tears were then rolling down...
One drop, two drops...and many more...
Each drop became a shining jewel,
And soon the firmament was studded with glittering tears,
Which are the stars today;
They are too shy in the day,
And too restless in the night to go to sleep.
For all peace seekers,
The stars are there to light the Way,
And to remind them of the Compassion of a holy Sage.

The Prince

Lyrics: by Supreme Master Ching Hai
Music: Fred Karlin

Whirling night.
Fever runs high.
Liquid rhythm, golden tunes,
Trembling senses and fragrant breath!
The bamboos in a garden corner
Sing glorious love songs...
Together, choir frogs around the lotus pond
And the weeping willows blow elegant kisses.
The aloof pine trees and cool faced water quiver
In silence.

Darkened firmament,
Shimmering candles,
Now glow with the vibrant power of love.
Time holds still.
And the worn out walkway forgives all trespassers!

O welcome!
Welcoming the Prince of Grace!
Whose melodious voice 's clear as the sound of a mountain spring,
And whose embracing eyes
Are blue as the water of the peaceful Azure Coast.

The flowers whisper:
"One would never want to see any other man." Monaco

Like A Bird

Lyrics: Supreme Master Ching Hai
Music: Fred Karlin

There were times tomorrow wouldn't arrive;
I waited all night, feeling very, very tired!
My soul was immersed in an endless nightmare,
Struggling so hard to be free from the sea of misery!
Like a bird in the middle of the stormy sky,
Immense oceans couldn't contain my melancholy.

There were times the sun would not rise;
I prayed in vain for the future to arrive;
Like in a coma, I lie in the long darkness,
Praying for tomorrow to quickly come by.

There were places where Spring wouldn't visit
I expected hopelessly for cherry flowers to blossom.
White snow everywhere instead of a pagoda bell's pealing,
To herald the New Year, only the cold wind's whistling...

And so it went - the rain came, followed by falling leaves,
Day and night, time flowed indifferently,
My heart still felt there was something incomplete,
Perhaps it was a love I'd never discovered before.

Winter Afternoon

Lyrics: Supreme Master Ching Hai
Music: Fred Karlin

I went to a foreign street on a cold winter afternoon.
The snow threw itself on the dry treetops;
The houses on the roadsides lay silent like graves;
Pale street lamps stood in a stupor, exhausted!

I walked through a park, the wind in my heart,
A stern statue proudly stood in the winter scene,
As if feeling sorry for those who sought fortune and fame,
As if feeling sorry for those who suffered in this fleeting dream.

That afternoon, I too wanted to be a statue,
Standing in the open space watching the buzzing scenes
A strange sadness overcame my sorrowful heart:
The compassion I felt, for me or for the multitude?

The Peace Seeker

By Nicholls Hackman

Fred Karlin brings to " One World" an extensive and multi-faceted musical expertise. Considering his background in jazz as a trumpet player, his years of experience composing musical scores or film and television, his credentials as author of two highly-respected texts on film music, and adding to these both an Oscar and an Emmy award it becomes clear that Karlin has traversed the scale of musical experience and expression.

It is this range of expression that Karlin has harnessed to create his symphonic portrait entitled The Peace Seeker. This work is a forty-minute journey weaving music, drama and prose, and featuring a 60-piece orchestra, three actors, a folk-rock band, vocalists, and the 25-member Pasadena Boys Choir. A grand and profound composition, Karlin describes The Peace Seeker in his interview with Liz Pennington of La Kezy radio:

"This work is a series of lyrics and poems by Supreme Master Ching Hai describing various ways in which we come face to face with the problems of life because of not having that connection within".

This theme is clearly evident in the following lyrics: And so it went-the rain came,
followed by falling leaves,
Day and night, time flowed indifferently,
My heart still felt there was
something incomplete.
Perhaps it was a love I'd never discovered before."

Karlin used these poetic images to weave a musical journey through lyrics that describe a search for inner peace and harmony with the outside world. The questions and conflicts encountered throughout the journey of The Peace Seeker represent a natural extension of Karlin's history of exploring and expressing , through his music, many powerful and provocative thoughts and ideologies that are meant to inspire the listener. For The Peace Seeker, Karlin has used his musical talent to give a voice to the inspirational poetry of Supreme Master Ching Hai: I walked through an empty park,
the wind in my breaking heart,
A cold stone statue proudly stood
in the winter scene,
As if feeling sorry for those who sought fame and fortune...

The lyrics are replete with powerful images and Karlin has built around them a majestic piece that inspires quite a bit of soul-searching.

Ultimately, however, the poems communicate an uplifting message which Karlin himself describes as "... the realization that happiness and peace are inside us and not found in the outside world."

It is such powerful verses and their ability to evoke these profound thoughts that move Karlin to undertake the project of adapting poet Supreme Master Ching Hai's words to music. He relates, " I feel very privileged myself to be able to have worked on this piece and written it. [Supreme Master Ching Hai] feels that we all have the power to be very artistic within us and creative and lives that message by example." As a renowned artist, poet and designer, Her works invite people to look within themselves to achieve their own individual greatness. Her poetry and designs leave us with a sense of depth to the understanding of our own purpose in life, without stepping over the boundaries of personal freedom. Evidence of this insight is found clearly in the admiration and respect of such high caliber performers who have prepared their inspirations from Her works.

Benefit Concert to Feature "The Prince";
Maria Newman's Regal Musical Adaptation of
Supreme Master Ching Hai's poetry

by Elliott Davis

Daughter of the legendary composer Alfred Newman, Maria Newman is an effervescent and talented composer, who has composed an orchestral piece around lyrics of the internationally recognized poet Supreme Master Ching Hai entitled "The Prince." When first reading Supreme Master Ching Hai's work, Newman immediately felt that the strong imagery created by the description of the poet's surroundings at the time would be offered beautiful support by orchestral harmonies.

The aloof pine trees and cool
Faced water quiver
In silence.

George Thatcher, an internationally renowned trombonist and composer, has played in many hit movie scores such as Jurassic Park, Men in Black and Toy Story. Thatcher shares Newman's warmth for both the poem and the poet Supreme Master Ching Hai, whom he describes as one of the most inspiring artists and humanitarians he has ever come across. Both Newman and Thatcher were struck by the poem's sensual and sincere portrayal of love, which carries the obvious earthly awe of beauty and gentleness so graciously alongside that of a deeper and more spiritual nature:

O welcome!
Welcoming the Prince of Grace!
Whose melodious voice's clear as the sound of a mountain spring,
And whose embracing eyes
Are blue as the water of the peaceful Azure Coast.

Letters of Appreciation

One World of Joy
and Happiness

After the benefit concert "One World... of Peace through Music", Master contributed US$10,000 to the Pasadena Boys Choir scholarship fund, as well as another US$10,000 worth of gifts and red envelopes to each of the boys. John Barron, the director of the Pasadena Boys Choir, was thoroughly surprised and touched that Master had answered his prayers for the scholarship fund. Some of the boys wouldn't have been able to go to the summer camp for their music lessons without help. The choirboys were all extremely grateful to Master for Her love and generosity, as well as for the opportunity of performing for Her. The following are from the appreciation letters sent by John Barron and the boys. Witnessing the sincerity of these talented boys from various cultural backgrounds, one could feel that "One World" will soon be realized...

Dear Supreme Master Ching Hai

We feel so overwhelmed with joy and gratefulness for the generosity You have bestowed on our organization and children.

Our children received Your beautiful gift packages and the special New Year's gift envelopes that You so lovingly arranged for them to have as special expressions of Your love, kindness, and charity. How surprised they were when they were presented with these beautiful flowered gift bags and Chinese New Year gift envelopes.

When Nancy came to the College where we conduct our classes to deliver the gift bags, I helped her to unload them from the van. We lined all of the flowered gift bags in a corner of the room and told her that it was as if a beautiful garden had sprung up right in our classroom. The soft pastel colors of the flowers on the bags seemed to me to be a reflection of Your gentleness, wondrous kindness, and Your love and caring for humanity. How very blessed we feel by all of this goodness and generosity You have so graciously bestowed on us. I hope we can be worthy of all of it.

We will have a little special gift for You in a few weeks as a small and humble token of our thanks. In the meantime, we send You our love, our prayers for continued good health and prosperity, and our gratitude from the depths of our hearts.

God's blessings on You and Your continued work in our world.

John Barron

Dear Supreme Master Ching Hai,

I have been away for over a week but I wanted to express to You again how deeply grateful we are to You for showing our organization and children so much generosity. The wonderful gift of $10,000 to our scholarship fund was such a surprise to us, but then to receive another $10,000 in special gifts to our children was overwhelming. The bags were so beautifully and lovingly put together, and to include a cash gift for each child was quite a surprise to them.

I also want to tell You how much we have appreciated everything Your staff members have done to show their kindness and support. I know how proud You must be of Your wonderful staff; each of them whom I have met are such a beautiful reflection of everything that You represent in Your love of people and Your devotion to the cause of charitableness and helping to alleviate suffering. I so very much admire all that all of You do to make the world a better place to live.

I will not see the boys choir for almost two more weeks, but I know many of the boys are writing thank you letters to You. Once we have collected them, we will forward them on to You.

Our continued best wishes to You in your work; may our paths cross again in the future.

With our fullest thanks and gratitude.

Yours very truly,

John Barron

March 29, 1999

Dear Supreme Master Ching Hai,

Your special gifts of some weeks ago to our children were very much appreciated, and many of the boys wanted to express to You their personal appreciation. We have compiled here the letters that many of the boys wrote, and we have included the photos that I took the day the gifts were distributed to part of our group.

I wish You could have been present when the gifts were presented to see the surprised expressions on their faces. They were overwhelmed with Your generosity and very moved by Your kindness.

As You know, we are going to apply Your gifts of $10,000 to assist some of our boys with summer camp scholarships. Your generosity will make it possible for a number of our children to go to camp who would otherwise not have been able to afford the costs of the summer training program in Northern California. Your gift was an answer to a prayer. Just prior to my being advised of Your donation, we had received word from the school that we use in the summer that our camp rates were going to be substantially increased. Your donation will greatly help us to see that most of our boys get to camp this summer. We are truly most grateful!

I send my warmest regards and personal best wishes for a peaceful and happy Spring and Summer.

Yours very truly,

John Barron

Supreme Master Ching Hai,

Your life is an inspiration to the people of the world, especially those who have seen life’s darkness. Your beautiful poetry, writings and wisdom bring joy and peace to those whose spirits cry out for sustenance. Through Your artistry and gifts, You bring relief, compassion, and hope to those who suffer. Your kindness, Your generosity and Your gentleness soften the anguish of tragedy and man’s inhumanity to man. Your life is like a beautiful symphony, an eloquent poem which refreshes the human spirit and points the way to truth, fulfillment and beauty.

We cannot begin to repay You for all You do to make our world a better place, but we can send You our love and our deepest expression of thankfulness. We are humbled by Your kindness and abundant generosity. May Your life always be blessed and sanctified - may Your spirit always soar.

Dear Supreme Master Ching Hai,

Just like the thousands of people who have heard the "One World", I too, thought it was extremely beautiful. Especially, I liked the "Winter Afternoon". Whatever the music, the words (created by You), explained to me what the real world was like, far different from the world I live in. Despite the differences in the many independent worlds now, I too believe in the union of the different worlds.
Also, I thank You for the gifts and Your generous heart. I am very honored to receive Your powerful books and C.D. full of beautiful music. Once again, thank You very much!

Dear Supreme Master,

My name is Blake Christensen and I am 12 years old. Singing at Your concert was exciting. Your story about Your life was very interesting and the way that You sing was moving to me and also the way You sang to the audience. Your art work is very beautiful and also Your women's clothing. Thank You for the gift basket.

Love

Dear Supreme Master,

For You have been a wonderful woman throughout Your life. I'm in fifth grade and love to sing. When I sang in the beautiful concert, One World, I felt so fortunate to sing for You. Not many children were able to do what I did. Your generosity made You the person You were and are.
Thank You for the wonderful gifts to packed and the Chinese New Year's red bag. I'm also thankful for going through trouble to pack that.

Dear Supreme Master Ching Hai,

I am Shafeeq Shomsid-Deen, my name means follower of the faith and light of faith. I am thirteen years old, and in seventh grade. I love to play with r/c (radio controlled), Lego building, and hockey. I enjoyed Your tribute the One World... of Peace Through Music. I thought (and as with my parents) feel that it was of exquisite taste and perfect stature. I loved Your tapes, CD, and book on Your life, and Your donation to global disasters. I feel that Your support and donations toward the disasters was very gracious. I feel that others who have money should do this too. My dad is an Ob/gyn and my mother is a home-establisher. I feel grateful, and feel gratitude toward Your gift package. I would like to thank You again.

Sincerely, Shafeeq Shomsid-Deen

March 18, 1999

Dear Supreme Master Ching Hai,

I have studied the arts since I was very young as You. I was first introduced to the piano since I was three by my grandmother. Upon my arrival to the United States, I started professional lessons. Since then I have taken the vocal arts and have been in organizations like the Pasadena Boys Choir for seven years. Your poetry and music has been an influence. So was Your concert.
"One World" was one of the greatest experiences I've had in my life. I enjoyed learning the music and shall cherish their memory. I have also heard of Your work around the world and of how You have continued to support people in need. You have my respects and thanks. Specifically for Your work and Your generous donations and gifts to the Pasadena Boys Choir. Thank You.

March 20, 1999

Dear Supreme Master,

I am in the seventh grade and I really enjoyed performing in Your program. I personally thought that it was excellent. And it really opened my eyes on what the world is really like.
Thank You for Your generous gift and I hope You live a long, loving, caring and prosperous life. I hope I get the Honor of meeting You some day. Sincerely...........

One World of Joy and Happiness From Mrs. Zaida J. Rinsulat, Cotabato Province, the Philippines Letters of Appreciation

Excerpt from the letter of appreciation from Mrs. Zaida J. Rinsulat,
Cotabato Province, the Philippines (Originally in English)

Greetings of peace and love! I am thankful to God for giving me a chance of knowing you, and especially the opportunity of feeling the love of Supreme Master Ching Hai for the poor people. The people of Malinan are very, very happy for the water system Master Ching Hai has given to them. They are all expressing thanks to God for sending you and Master Ching Hai, when you learned of their miserable condition. Our Water system project is already finished and the people now are enjoying their drinking and cooking water. The little children told me that it seems that everything that has happened is like a dream. People did not expect that the project would be started right away, so quickly after our visit in the area. Please extend our deepest thanks to Master Ching Hai.

Sincerely yours,

The Heart-Felt Voice of a Moslem

>

At a spiritual symposium held by Moslem sponsors in Indonesia in December 1996, fellow initiates distributed vast numbers of sample booklets to the guests as well as the working staff and delegates of the sponsoring organization. Those who received the sample booklets could barely conceal the excitement they felt, and the good news spread quickly among them.

One day, the local Center received a phone call from the chairman of chapter of the sponsoring organization, who revealed that a perusal of the sample booklet had evoked his interest in learning more about Master's teachings. Although we invited him to visit us at the Center, he did not come as scheduled. Realizing that taking this first step forward is difficult for anyone, we called on him at his home. After a courteous exchange of greetings, we had an enjoyable meeting and felt exceptionally close as though we were old friends who had not seen each other for many years. Mr. chairman has a great sense of humor and is very sincere. He has been a devout spiritual practitioner for over twenty years. His wife is very dignified and showed a strong spiritual inclination. Once the couple understood that Master's teachings are in accord with Islamic concepts and values, they asked to learn the Convenient Method and asserted that they would come to the Center.

One afternoon, Mr. Chairman and his wife came to the Center. I taught the Convenient Method of meditation to them and, before starting to meditate, reminded them that Convenient Method practitioners should not meditate for more than thirty minutes a day. When the time was up, I played Master's music and turned on the light. But they sat motionlessly. Five minutes passed. I snapped my fingers. They made no response and their eyes remained closed. Another five minutes passed. I got a bit worried because they had exceeded the time limit set by Master. Driven by a sense of urgency, I picked up a "gong-stick" from the table and, asking Master for Her blessings, made three loud knocks close to their ears.

After a while, they slowly came out of their meditation. The chairman's wife was elated. During the meditation, she had seen herself passing through a dark tunnel before a brilliant and beautiful scene with lotuses appeared before her. She herself had turned into an innocent child, playing and running around as she liked. She was so filled with joy that she did not want to stop meditating.

The chairman did not say anything about his experience when he first woke up. He only asked where we had purchased that "gong-stick," why it was so powerful, and if we could help him buy one. Later, he shared with us that he not only beheld a dazzlingly bright light radiating from a diamond but also heard the chimes of church bells during his meditation. He too was exalted. I commented that they could have such wonderful experiences just by practicing the Convenient Method because they had very pure hearts, sincerely believed in Allah, and had been doing spiritual practice for many years. Not long after that, they brought their children and friends to the Center to learn the Convenient Method in what was a sheer testimony of their faith in the Quan Yin Method.

However, when I encouraged them to receive initiation, the Chairman confided, in embarrassment, that it was very inconvenient to follow a full vegetarian diet in Moslem society. Nonetheless, soon afterwards, their longing for the Truth encouraged them to switch to a pure vegetarian diet and later they received initiation. This once again proved how powerful the Quan Yin Method is and how it can help us overcome difficulties.

One day, the Chairman said to me with great sincerity, "Master has always helped the Catholics and the Buddhists in the past. Now it is time to help the Moslems!" These words touched me deeply, for the Moslems are known worldwide for their deep belief in their religion. They pray five times a day to remind themselves to remember God at all times. They form a solemn scene of respect when they, regardless of gender or age, put down their work and join in prayer at the same time. With their earnest sincerity to follow Allah's teachings, God will surely help them find their way back to the Kingdom of Allah. The Quan Yin Method, with its observation of the inner sound stream, is the best way back to the Kingdom of God. As the Bible says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

By practicing the Quan Yin Method, the Moslems will one day truly understand the many Islamic ceremonies and have the same inner sound experience that the Prophet Mohammed did. Although all the ancient enlightened Masters taught only the Quan Yin Method, the formal rituals that are preserved until today are performed without the inner power that those Masters had during their lifetimes. Now people of the Islamic faith need to carry the torch and disseminate the ancient holy method of observing the sound stream to their brothers and sisters. May Allah respond to the earnest prayers of the sentient beings and guide them towards the path of the Quan Yin Method, through which the inner sound stream will lead them back to the Kingdom of Allah!

* The Prophet Mohammed heard the voice of Allah in the Cave of Hira and wrote the Koran.

Sharing the Truth at the Green Island Vocational Training Institute (2)>

[Green Island] Toward the end of 1998, fellow initiates presented a spiritual lecture seminar at the Green Island Vocational Training Institute. Due to spatial restrictions, however, not all prisoners were able to attend. Therefore, the Institute invited initiates to give a second seminar on February 8, 1999 for those inmates who were not present on the first occasion. Instruction in the correct method of meditation was also offered upon request.

It is also worth mentioning that, after examining the Quan Yin Method, the Professional Training Center of the Institute asked that our Association send instructors to provide inmates with long term guidance on a regular basis.

A certificate of appreciation presented
by the Changhua juvenile Reformatory School.

[Changhua] As the gentle spring breeze blew over central Formosa on March 6, 1999, fellow practitioners from the Changhua Center set out for the Juvenile Reformatory School in neighboring Tienchung township. When the team arrived to decorate the venue, they found the gates of the center open wide in welcome of their arrival. Several inmates joined in the decoration work and soon all barriers dissolved between the initiates and the young detainees. Their low voices and light laughter gave an air of lightheartedness and peace to the normally quiet and somber center.

At noon, groups of fellow practitioners from around Formosa arrived, ready to present their best performances to the juvenile detainees. A Quan Yin messenger and the local contact persons also joined in the activity, adding a warm and festive air to the venue.

The activity commenced with the juvenile center presenting a certificate of appreciation to the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association for its social concern and contributions. The entertainment program immediately followed this. The wonderful performances by the fellow practitioners won thunderous rounds of applause from the young people. As laughter reverberated throughout the venue, both performers and members of the audience melted as one in the ocean of Master's love.

The performance ended with a videotape display briefly introducing Master. The young detainees watched the tape with devotion and undivided attention as they were completely drawn by Master's amicable and noble being. She dissolved the long-frozen walls surrounding these souls and led them towards the gate of wisdom. The day's activity ended on a successful note with the song "The Little Lambs Want to Go Home".

Prison inmates close their eyes to meditate.

[Tainan] Against the backdrop of beautiful mountain scenery in Shanshang, a rural township in southern Formosa, is Tainan Ming-Teh Open Prison, a seeming paradise undisturbed by the hustle and bustle of the world that houses inmates screened for good behavior and excellent performance in other prisons. Their good conduct earns them the opportunity to serve the rest of their terms at Ming-Teh Prison. Vehicles bring the inmates to private factories to work during the day and return them to the prison at sunset. The inmates do not work on holidays or weekends.

On the evening of February 26, the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association and the Great Awakening Association jointly held a spring activity, the "Feast of Love," to show their concern for the inmates. Local initiates entertained the audience with a variety of performances designed to provide a relaxed and happy time. The program ended with the area Quan Yin messenger introducing the Convenient Method of meditation to the interested individuals.

Time passed quickly and soon the inmates had to leave the venue. Each one received fruit and cookies, prepared by fellow initiates, other initiates bid them good-bye on stage with the song "The Little Lambs Want to Go Home". Many of the inmates experienced Master's love, while shedding tears and waving good-bye to the initiates. This is one of the more relaxed prisons in Formosa, and some of the prisoners will soon be released, but others will have to serve many more years, or even life sentences. May those who have learned the Convenient Method of meditation practice diligently and regain true freedom and peace from within.

Vegetarian food sampling and singing activities at the Kaohsiung Juvenile Detention and Classification Center Kaohsiung Juvenile Detention and Classification Center

[Kaohsiung] Over the past two years, fellow initiates have sponsored a weekly instructional program at the Kaohsiung Juvenile Detention and Classification Center. Though strictly guarded, the Detention and Classification Center is like a junior high school, where most students are under age eighteen, with some only ten. They wear uniforms and are no different than regular school students. Their supervisory officers and teachers are full of compassion, and warmly welcome fellow initiates when they arrive at the center to present their weekly class about Master's message of love. Listening to Master's spiritual stories is their favorite activity, and they often request to see Master's pictures and videotaped lectures.

Students at the center are awaiting their various court decisions. Those who are convicted of committing trivial offenses will be transferred to the adjacent Juvenile Reformatory School, while serious offenders will be sent to the Juvenile Jail. When we first saw the cheerful looks and innocent smiles on the faces of these youngsters, we wondered what crime they could have committed at such a young age. Later, we came to understand their background and crime motivation; most of them had been taking drugs out of curiosity and a small fraction of them had been arrested for fighting or stealing.

Among the students was a dignified-looking one who became a vegetarian right after entering the center. Unlike his peers, he has maintained this diet for several months and is now practicing the Convenient Method. Some of the juveniles have come to appreciate the staff for being nicer than their parents, whether in their daily life or spiritually. One of the students could hardly recognize his friends when he first arrived some time after they did, as their rough personalities had changed so quickly in this new environment. They had become gentler and have become interested in studying, writing, painting, and reciting poems. Even their appearance and temperament had changed.

The Detention and Classification Center requires that all students meditate for half an hour just before bedtime. One day, when a Quan Yin messenger came to teach the Convenient Method, one of the faculty members brought the new arrivals and asked that they learn the Convenient Method. To this, the Q.Y.M. replied, "They have to be willing to learn before I can teach them."

The officer replied, "Meditation is very good for them! It helps to calm them down emotionally. Even when they are sent to other prisons after their verdict comes in, they still have to meditate every day. It's good to learn meditation."

A week after they learned the Convenient Method, we found that their faces were shining and full of joy. One of them confided that he was over his nightmares and could now sleep well. Others disclosed that they found peace of mind and no longer felt troubled or irritated. Many teenagers spend a lot of time playing video games, singing karaoke, or speeding on motorcycles, with little chance to come into contact with religions or less chance to practice spiritually. Detainment at the center has given these students access to religious scriptures. The questions these teenagers raise are similar to those of adults who have studied the holy books. Perhaps, fate has brought them here. If so, then detainment is actually a pivotal juncture in their lives - a chance to know Master's teachings and receive the "method" of practice.

Kaohsiung Juvenile Reformatory School

Students eager to learn the Convenient Method at the Kaohsiung Juvenile Reformatory School.

Adjacent to the Kaohsiung Juvenile Detention Center is the Kaohsiung Juvenile Reformatory School. The education director there thinks much along the same lines as we do. He permits us to conduct large spiritual seminars at the center from time to time, with one-to-one counseling every week. Although none of the initiates have had counseling experience, they have been able to communicate with the students with inner love and wisdom that they have obtained from the inner Master.

The first time we arrived to offer counsel, we were pleasantly surprised when many students greeted us and asked whether we would tell them some of Master Ching Hai's stories. These students come mainly from the Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Taitung Detention and Classification Centers to be reformed after final decisions are made regarding their offenses. Thanks to the instructional programs we have given at the centers, numerous students are familiar with Master's teachings. At our first spiritual presentation, we taught the Convenient Method and many that volunteered to learn it were those who had heard Master's teachings at the Detention and Classification Centers.

Fellow practitioners, charged with Master's love, visit the Great Awakening Association.

[Tainan] The Great Awakening Association, an association devoted to the well-being of prisoners, offers both moral counseling to prisoners and substantive assistance to parolees. They accept them with a magnanimous heart and help them to begin a new life.

The association was founded by a one-time gangster chief, Mr. Hsu Cheng-hsiung, who became a devout Buddhist and devoted his life to living the Buddhist teachings after his release from jail. He rejected lucrative temptations to again conduct illicit activities. Instead, he worked with his wife, cleaning public lavatories, and selling vegetarian soups and cold drinks to earn a humble living. Life was tough, but Mr. Hsu chose to brave through the hard times over breaking the law. Today, he returns to the prisons, citing himself as an example and advising those inmates to turn back from the wrong path.

The Great Awakening Association chairman (left) receives a NT$50,000 contribution to help new-life seekers stand on their own feet.

A fellow initiate, who has been working in the prison for over a decade noted, "I have known Mr. Hsu for more than ten years. He sells cold drinks for 5-10 NT per cup, and uses the meager earnings to help the families of the inmates, so that they can serve their prison terms with peace of mind. He also advises these families to take good care of their children, so that they won't suffer another family tragedy."

Many prison wardens have witnessed the one-hundred-percent change in Mr. Hsu, as well as his perseverance in conducting counseling work in prisons. His positive influence on the inmates is indisputable. Therefore, members of the Great Awakening Association are given easy access to the prisons. The warden of the prison where Mr. Hsu served his sentence proudly named him an honorary alumnus of his prison, and his association is always welcomed there.

Ten years ago, Mr. Hsu attended one of Master's lectures and immediately switched to a vegetarian diet. After a number of spiritual experiences, he went to venerate Master at Hsihu Center. Master, in Her deep concern for inmates, arranged for fellow practitioners to visit the prisons around Formosa. For many years, with assistance from the Great Awakening Association, fellow practitioners have shared Master's divine love and teachings with prison inmates. Many inmates now practice the Convenient Method. Some who have received counseling from the Great Awakening Association have been initiated by Master, and are pursuing spiritual practice. Mr. Hsu is also practicing the Convenient Method and communicates with the inner Master.

Normally, society does not readily accept those who have served time behind bars. The difficulty in finding a livelihood often pushes these unfortunate people back onto the wrong path. To solve this problem, the Great Awakening Association operates vegetarian restaurants, manual car wash garages and stores that sell hand phones and communications systems et cetera, to provide job opportunities for those ready to start anew. The employees are required to observe a vegetarian diet, keep the five precepts, and study the Buddhist scriptures. Each day, Mr. Hsu personally prepares vegetarian meals for these people, but despite his noble ideal, he is often hindered by the shortage of funds. Touched by the benevolent intent of the Great Awakening Association, the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association in Tainan contributed NT$50,000 to the association, hoping to do its part to help these remorseful souls as well as praying that these lost ones find their way to a bright future!

The Method of Love

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, N.Y., U.S.A.
June 20, 1994 (Originally in English)

  Pearls of Wisdom height="139">

>

A person who practices the way of love, contemplation of the inner light and sound, is supposed to grow in love and wisdom. So if we practice the way of love, we should do everything with love. And everything that comes out of love is naturally beautiful and perfect. If you do anything that is not yet perfect, or not yet beautiful, you know that your love has not yet completely developed. You have not completely used the power of love inside you. And that's the way to reflect, and know whether we have progressed or not.

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Thailand
January 1, 1994 (Originally in Chinese)

The reason that we help others is to raise the loving atmosphere in this world. We want to symbolically and spiritually raise the energy of this world; bring, spread a loving atmosphere into our planet, so that our world becomes better and better, and there is increasing love among neighbors, and unconditional love for each other. That is the true meaning of charity.

Master Tells Jokes

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai
Group Meditation, Hawaii, USA
March 28, 1993 (Originally in English)

St. Peter is supposed to be very serious - he has the key to heaven, you see. At one period of time, God forbade any "unserious" person to go to heaven because they always came there very undisciplined, lying around everywhere, drinking, making a mess, and they didn't clean their garbage and all that. So God forbade, and said, "Only serious believers can go to heaven! The unserious persons have to go to the intermediate state, stay in hell, or stay in the human realm. We have had enough with casual laughing, loud noise and garbage everywhere. It can't be like that!" So, St. Peter knew it, and he took the order very seriously, checking that anyone unserious could not come.

There was one woman; she had always been a good joker in her life. She had never taken things seriously and she laughed all the time. When she died and wanted to go to heaven, St. Peter said to her, "No, you can't. Lately God has had enough with laughter and the "unseriousness" of human beings. Hes forbids any "unserious" person to come up. So, sorry."

The woman was very sad and said, "Oh please, won't you give me a chance? I promise I will never tell any jokes in heaven. I will be very serious. I will never show my teeth again. I will never show a "tooth".

St. Peter said, "Oh no, I can't believe you people. You are always cracking jokes. How can you be serious?" The woman said, "Please, please, won't you believe me? I will never say anything anymore, never, ever!"

St. Peter felt very sorry for the woman. She was very sincere and she hadn't done anything bad in her life. She had always gone to the church and given the priest what he demanded; given to charity and did everything that the church demanded. So actually, she was a very holy person. St. Peter said, "Oh yes, I've looked at your record and you are all right, except that you laugh too loud all the time. But if you promise to be serious, I will talk to God about it first."

So he went back and reported to the "Boss" up there. The Boss said, "Is that right? If she is that good and she promises not to laugh again at random, all right, give her a chance. But you have to give her a test first to see whether she is truly serious. Let her cross the one-thousand-mile bridge. If, during the crossing of this very narrow bridge, the razor's edge bridge, she doesn't laugh and she doesn't tell any jokes at all, then she can go to heaven. Otherwise, the bridge will break and she will fall down."

So they crossed the bridge together. Then suddenly, the woman started to blah, blah some joke as habit would go. St. Peter said, "Don't joke! Don't laugh, okay?" She said, "All right, I forgot. I won't talk. I won't laugh." But then, as they walked on, suddenly the bridge broke. Do you know why? St. Peter laughed. He heard the joke and he couldn't help it. He laughed.

There was a big kindergarten class and the teacher allowed the kids to ask questions. They kept carrying on one after another. There was one little guy who kept putting his hand up in the air. But when it came to his turn, he put his hand down. So the teacher asked,"What's wrong? You've been waiting all this time till your turn. Why when I asked you to speak did you put your hand down? He said, "It's too late. It's already happened, right here. I already wet my pants." (Laughter)

When you meditate, don't worry about the energy. You should not pay attention to any part of your body, because when you think like that, you stop the energy. Let it flow freely.

Sit with about one third of your buttocks on a cushion. Then you can sit straight like this. If you sit like this or like that, (Master slumps forward with Her shoulders, from right to left, then leans far back against the chair cushions) then sometimes the energy doesn't flow correctly. If you sit long, and if you don't sit correctly, the blood circulation cannot flow. Then it causes some blockage in the body, and then it causes pain. Also if it's cold, you must keep yourself warm. Sometimes it is rheumatism. Next time, before you sit, maybe you should put something warm on your back first; keep warm from the shoulder on down. If that doesn't help, you should put on sesame oil. That should help.

Q: Dear Master, I was wondering. Is it possible to pick up the karma from others, and feel it as physical pain?

M: It's possible, yes. (Q: And the solution?) At that time, you should recite the Five Holy Names, pray to the inner Master to protect you, to help you, and do more meditation as soon as you can. If the pain persists, maybe you can go to see a doctor, or rub some sesame oil on it. Eat a little bit more calcium-rich, vitamin-rich food, or take a supplement of vitamins or calcium. Maybe it is a physical problem, too.

I wanted to tell you that for people who have pain in any part of the body, please don't ever wash with cold water, not even for one second. Even if you wash your hands or face, the cold water still remains somewhat in your skin. Then it sinks inside the bones and it makes the pain terribly worse, unbearable. When washing your hands, please try to use warm water. Even those who don't have pain in their joints or muscles yet, try not to use cold water, just wash with warm water all the time. For those who have pain, even in warm climates, try to wash with warm or lukewarm water, not cold, and never ice-cold water. Like this, you aggravate your painful condition. If you have pain, and you don't have any hot massage oil in your house, you can use sesame oil. The sesame oil that's used for cooking in the kitchen is a very good remedy for you.

Have a Notepad Handy
While Meditating

>

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai
International 4-day retreat, Washington D.C., U.S.A.
December 24, 1997 (Originally in English)

You know, sometimes even when I meditate, I think of a problem, too. It was at hand, and sometimes pressing, sometimes very difficult to get rid of. So what I do is, I write down the problem, before I meditate -- this I will have to solve. Have a notebook beside you, or in your pocket -- a small one, so it's not heavy, and a pen. This is more practical, concerning your job; because once you write it down, the mind feels better. "Okay. He is going to take care of it." It has already lessened the intensity and the pressure. You tell your mind, it eases off. If you know the solution to your problem, write that down, too. That's even better for the mind to calm down. But during meditation, sometimes you have better ideas about how to solve that problem, have some clearer idea about what to do. Then you write it down immediately, because that may be the Master answering you, giving you the solution. So write it down before you forget. Also once you write it down, you are peaceful. Then you can continue to meditate; and later when you finish your meditation, you can take care of it. So don't hesitate.

The practice of meditation is not only to become a Master, as I've told you. It benefits you in many ways. It gives you peace of mind, gives you a clearer mind to solve your daily problems. It gives you physical purification so that you become fit and healthy. It is not only to become a Master or to be one with God. The by-products are plenty. Miracles happen, and health is restored. The sickness is removed, and the problem is resolved. So do more meditation. During meditation, if any ideas come up very clearly to you, write them down. Like this, you can continue to meditate, and the problem is gone.

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai
Los Angeles, CA, U.S.A. June 7, 1998 (Originally in English)

When you meditate, you should have a pad next to you. Any clear ideas that occur, jot down quickly the main points -- one, two words to recollect later. During meditation, you are in a different level of consciousness. When you come back to this physical one, you forget because the mind is limited. It's like a computer. It's not equipped for all the information in the universe. So sometimes it misses out on information. It's defective -- the mind, the computer.

No Turning Back >

By Ta-Ming

In 1989 when I was still a novice in the monastic order, I had the good fortune to accompany Master on several trips to foreign countries. While I claimed to be very fortunate, in reality I was very nervous and afraid. The reason was simple; I knew I didn't know how to assist and take care of anyone. I had always been extremely well cared for. Having just been ordained, I didn't even know how to cook, do laundry, or take care of my daily duties; yet I was assigned to take care of the absolutely perfect, meticulous, and elegant Master. Being Her attendant was the last assignment that I would have imagined myself doing; it was the one job I feared most.

However, in the days to come, Master showed me that She was only responding to the deepest aspirations of my soul. I realized clearly from the efforts She exerted and the difficulties that She suffered for my sake that helping me fulfill my aspirations accounted for every one of Her actions. And this is true not only for me, but for all of us as well!

After much reflection, I have realized that the main reason why I was chosen to be Master's attendant was that I was very anxious to be rid of my many negative qualities. I became a nun with this intent, deliberately waiting a few months before joining the order to make sure it was not an impulsive decision. I knew very well that becoming a nun was the only way to get rid of those parts of myself that I hated most, so I joined with the determination to be born anew. And immediately after my ordination, Master personally helped me to fulfill my wish by bringing me with Her.

Since the course had been set, I had no option but to follow. How I wished that I had been called to be Her attendant after I had been better trained in the monastic order! The reality is, however, that after Master had trained me to become better, I could not accompany Her anymore. From this, it is obvious that She chooses us to be Her attendants only to train us and to benefit sentient beings; She never considers Her personal comfort or pleasure.

One day in 1990 while abroad, Master and I were taking a stroll along the street when we saw an ordinary-looking elderly woman slowly walking toward us. As she came closer, I did not notice anything unusual about her, but Master stretched out Her arms to give the elderly lady a hand, asking, "Are you all right?" Weary and walking unsteadily, she replied, "I have not eaten for a long time." Supporting her with both arms, Master took her to a nearby restaurant and immediately ordered hamburgers, French fries, and a drink for her. The restaurant manager came over, and with a grim face ordered the old woman to leave. She apparently had begged for food there before. When Master told the supervisor sternly, "She is my honorable guest," the embarrassed manager apologized. Apart from treating the aged woman to a meal, Master also bought more hamburgers for her. The woman was very grateful although she was too weak to say anything.

They were not vegetarian hamburgers, but so what? Master's quick, decisive actions swept away the habitual conflicts that had previously plagued me when I wanted to do a good deed. Sometimes when I wanted to offer my seat to others on the bus, I would feel afraid and uneasy about attracting attention. I was filled with negative thoughts at that time, and looking back now, I not only find it ridiculous, but also I feel bad. People have the courage to do evil things but are shy about performing good deeds. This is like having the guts to go to hell, but not the courage to go to heaven!

Anyway, this incident seems to have shaken off some of the mud that was stuck to my body. We can learn quickly by observing the way Master does things. Without need for additional words, we just understand and feel touched. We come to love Her even more, and to hold Her in greater reverence. She helps us lift the heavy burdens from our previous lives, and uses Her personal actions to set examples for us in every way imaginable.

ighting the Lamp of Love
in Hearts

By Ta-Ming

Following a volcanic eruption in the Philippines in 1991, we received news from our friends in that country about the need for emergency relief. Master immediately assembled the monks and nuns to discuss what to do. Such a discussion was in fact a session for us to learn how to put love into action. Throughout the night, Master discussed with us plans of action and specific ways of implementation. It was also decided to place ads in the newspapers asking compassionate people to join the relief operation.

Master always acts very quickly, and demands the monastic practitioners to act in kind. It is always a unique experience to work with Her. Her way is very different than the way I was accustomed to working outside. Since no time could be wasted if lives were to be saved, within a short while all the advertisements and relevant documents were ready. I worked very hard, but only because Master told me to do so; I didn't feel that I was very compassionate myself. Then, since time was passing quickly, Master decided to send a team of monks and nuns to do whatever could be done. I was chosen to be a member of the team.

The climate was very hot in the Philippines, and outside of Manila, the whole country was covered with ash. It was a tragic sight. We spent every day of our stay purchasing large quantities of food, utensils, and basic necessities, and then packing them into boxes so they could be delivered to the affected areas the following day. We soon received help from a general who offered an indoor basketball court at an air base where we could store the relief provisions. That saved a lot of time in transportation, and increased our efficiency. The air base assigned a soldier to guard the goods for us. In the beginning, he had little respect for us. But day and night, he watched this group of foreigners busily packing sugar, salt and rice, not taking any time for sleep, and then going out in trucks at daybreak to offer relief provisions to his fellow countrymen in the affected areas. The group usually returned at dusk, and took no rest then, either.

After a while, the wives and children of the soldiers living nearby came in and began to work with us, packing the same way we packed. Due to the language barrier, we were unable to converse with each other, yet the atmosphere was warm and we felt very close. It was a beautiful sight. With their help, we were able to leave earlier for Manila, where we placed long distance calls to report our progress to Master.

It was midnight when we left the basketball court, and the soldier on guard was asleep. We had to inform him of our departure and ask him to lock the door, so I went to wake him up. When he opened his eyes and saw me, he took my hand and placed it on his forehead; starlight was sparkling in his eyes. I was surprised at first, but then I realized that Master's love had reached deep into his soul, and he was only expressing his utmost appreciation. I was extremely touched. I knew that I had not been doing this job out of love, but the change in this soldier lit a lamp in my heart. I am now willing to light, with my humble lamp, this world that is desperately in need of brightness. This incident made a deep impression on my mind for a very long time.

If Master had not sent me with the disaster relief team, I would not have seen the suffering in this world so clearly, nor could I have liberated myself from my selfish heart. As love grows in my heart, I will never be able to live in that narrow world again. This incident brought me to the realization that we can use sincerity and right actions to light the brightest of lamps in the heart of each sentient being.

The Great Mercy

By Wild Grass

In 1986, Master went to the Formosan offshore islands of Penghu to visit the Au Lacese refugees living there. While crossing a long bridge on Her departure from the refugee camp, She suddenly asked the cab driver to turn the car around so She could look at a dog lying by the roadside. She had seen it there on Her way to the camp that morning and wanted to know if the animal was all right. She got out of the taxi and patted the dog, which could barely open its lifeless eyes. It could neither move nor bark and seemed to be in great pain. Master asked the driver to carry the dog carefully to the back seat of the cab. The blood stains on his hands showed that the dog was injured. Master was much troubled and asked the driver to find a veterinarian as quickly as possible. The driver drove around and finally found one, but unfortunately the vet was out on a house call.

While waiting for the vet, Master moistened the dog's head and talked soothingly to make it feel better. The dog seemed to rouse a little; it drank some water and lay quietly. Touched by Master's true love, the driver left on his own initiative to bring the veterinarian back. On the way, he told the vet about Master's loving actions. Upon arrival, the vet immediately checked the dog's condition. It had obviously been hit by a car and sustained internal injuries. Its chest was swollen and it appeared to be in great pain. The vet gave it two injections to reduce its pain and it regained consciousness.

The next problem was to find a home for the dog. It might starve if it were put back on the street. Therefore, Master thought it would be a good idea to take the dog to the Au Lacese refugees, who were already raising and taking care of many dogs and cats. She also obtained the phone number of the vet so that he could continue to treat the dog. Her sincerity and kindness touched everyone. The vet kindly refused to accept any fee for his services, so Master asked the driver to take Her to purchase some fruit for him before returning to the refugee camp.

It had not occurred to anyone that the owner of the dog would be an Au Lacese person in the camp. He was going to the airport to meet his brother when the dog had run after him and was hit by a car. He did not have time to take care of it at the time, so he moved it to the side of the road. But he could not find the dog when he returned. (Perhaps that was after we had taken it to the veterinarian.)

Master felt much relieved when the dog was returned to its owner. When we went to have a meal at a restaurant, the driver told the people there about Master's mercy and loving care. When Master offered him a meal, he would not accept it. He only accepted some money for the gasoline. Out of kindness, the man had worked all morning without a break, carrying the dog into and out of the taxi and helping to clean up the dirty back seat, but he had not complained. Nevertheless, Master extended Her apologies to him and gave him some fruit with this remark, "This is from God."

Later, Master told fellow initiates, "When someone needs urgent care, you must help him/her/it. You must not let even a single second slip by without trying."

In July 1986, a fellow initiate found a cute little white bird with a bright red beak. He brought it to Master and asked Her to bless it, and then set it free.

As soon as the cage was opened, the bird flew out. But unexpectedly, it flew back after a short while. It landed on Master's hand and refused to leave however hard we tried to chase it away. Thinking that it might be thirsty or hungry, Master prepared food and water for it and then hid Herself. Since the bird was unable to find Her, it came to the disciples. Master told us to put the food farther away and not get too close to the bird. Some of us had a bit of difficulty letting it go, and knowing how we felt, Master explained, "If we let the bird get used to staying with people, someone else might be able to catch it and then it might lose its freedom and become a caged bird. True mercy is mercy with wisdom."

Reflections on Spiritual Practice

Learn Not to Complain

By brother initiate Wenqing, LiIllinois, U.S.A. (Originally in English)

During my two-day stay in the Orlando Center to attend the Chinese New Year celebration, one lesson I learned is "Do not complain".

In the Center, there is a public men's bathroom in the gym with shower facilities in the front and the restroom in the back. Because of the traffic in and out of the shower room, a lot of water was carried out onto the gym floor in front of the bathroom. Also, as people came in from outside, they tracked in some dirt. Consequently, the floor in front of the bathroom and in the restroom soon became very dirty and muddy.

When I went to the restroom and saw the dirty floor, I felt very uncomfortable and started complaining, "Why is the floor so dirty? Why has no one been assigned to clean the floor? Those who are organizing the celebration should find someone to clean the floor."

After coming out from the restroom, I started walking around the Center, but the complaining thoughts were still in my mind. As I was walking around, I saw many fellow initiates busily working. Several sisters were helping initiates and guests check-in at the registration desk. Security guards were directing traffic. Some initiates were putting decorations on the trees while others were helping move boxes of food to the kitchen. Everyone was happy and in a celebrating mood.

Looking at the fellow initiates who were working around me, I suddenly realized that I had no right to complain. Everyone was working hard to make the celebration a success. I had not done anything but complain. I should not complain and wait for someone else to clean the bathroom and restroom for me. I should help clean them up myself. So I went back. But I could not find any usable cleaning equipment nearby. A little bit disappointed, I went to my tent to take a rest.

The next day, when I went to the restroom in the early morning, I saw a brother using just a broom and shower water to clean the floor inside the bathroom. I got some inspiration from the brother's actions. Instead of waiting for the cleaning equipment to come to me, I started assembling some cleaning equipment myself.

Although I still could not find a real mop, I found a "partial" mop with the cloth end, but without the handle. Then I located a pole that could be used to move the "partial" mop around. Finally, I borrowed a bucket from a sister in the bookstore. With all this equipment put together, I started cleaning up the floor in front of the bathroom and the one in the restroom.

In the afternoon, Master stayed with us for two and a half hours to answer initiates' questions. When Master answered one initiate's question, I felt She was speaking to me when She said that some people come to the Center with some pre-set ideas of what the Center should look like and, if the Center is not the same as they imagined, they feel disappointed. We should not expect other people to serve us!

Through this lesson, I came to understand that when we run into a situation that is not ideal, we should not complain. Instead, we should do what we can to improve the environment. I remember that Master once said that magic is created by our two hands. With our own hands, we can turn a wasteland into a paradise. That is what Master and fellow initiates have done in all the Centers around the world.

Enlightenment is the Key
to Keeping Peace in the World

>

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai
Pusan, Korea, May 15, 1993 (Originally in English)

The world is a big house and we have many rooms, and because we are very busy with our daily lives, we do not have much chance to see each other. But if everyone in this world realized that we are all brothers and sisters, then there would not be any discrimination and war.

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai
Costa Rica, February 9, 1991 (Originally in English)

I hope that one day the world will be without frontiers, so that neighbors can come and go to neighboring countries, have a cup of tea, drink a cup of coffee, talk together, and go back home on the same day or in the same week, without any problems about documents, without any trouble, without any interference from policemen, and all kinds of terrible bureaucracy. There should never be any refugees at all, let alone people refusing them. Every person should have the right to travel where he or she wants, and to make a living where it is suitable and favorable to his or her condition. Until that day, our world will remain in suffering, conflict and war. We should not bother to ask ourselves why. The reason is very obvious. It's because we are possessive. We think this is mine, this is ours, this belongs to us. We have forgotten to whom all these things belong. We have forgotten that God is the only King. And we do not act according to the rules of this almighty King. We never think in this life. Everyone just takes care of him or herself. Even if people have too much to eat, and too much to drink, they don't give it to their neighbors in need. Therefore, war is inevitable.

Vegetarianism and Peace

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai
Berkeley University, California, U.S.A. October 13, 1989 (Originally in English)

If we did not eat meat, no one would kill, no one would raise cattle. All the food would stay where it was and they could eat it and become healthy and strong. It'd be good for every nation, and it'd be good for our nation as well. We waste a lot of money on arms and on raising animals. All the arable land is wasted nowadays on raising cattle, pigs and the like, or most of it. So if we used these areas to cultivate wholesome, healthy food, I think the nations would benefit more and our nation would have more peace and no need for armed defense.

If every nation lived according to the Bible, according to the Buddhist teachings, "Thou shall not kill, Thou shall not steal", et cetera, then the world would have no more need for peace conferences, and would not need to waste so much coffee, champagne and cake at round table discussions that go nowhere. The more we talk about peace, the more war we have. It is because we go about it in an inconsistent manner. If everyone practiced meditation and ate a wholesome diet without any killing involved, the world would have long since been in a peaceful state and we'd have no hunger. There's no need to give away your property; just give up the meat-based diet. That'd be enough to save the world, as well as your own and the nation's health.

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai
Montreal, Canada April 17, 1993 (Originally in English)

Meat is the cause of all wars and suffering in this world, as well as that of your personal self. To refrain from eating meat is to contribute to peace on this planet, because in this way we terminate the cause of killing. Therefore, we will not reap the results of being killed, or being wounded.

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai
Panama, November 29, 1989 (Originally in English)

Nowadays there are certain happenings, such as changes in the weather, famine and all kinds of diseases inflicted upon our world. Some people with little faith blame God again. Everywhere I lecture, people ask me, "If there is a God why do such and such disasters happen?" But these people should remember it's not God who does all these things. It is we who have made all these troubles. For example, a few nations always test the atom bomb and hydrogen bomb, which disturbs the structure of the atmosphere, shaking the stability of the Earth. They think they can just shoot missiles into the air and it will create no problems, or do it in the ocean and it will make no problems. These practices still make problems, because the universe is constructed with many kinds of materials, some with solid substances and some with invisible substance. So by disturbing the invisible substances, they also disturb the stability of the universe, and interfere with the natural evolution of nature.

Enlightenment Is the True and Lasting Answer

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai
Costa Rica December 16, 1990 (Originally in English)

All wars come from ignorance. If we are ignorant, we don't know how to stop hatred, we don't know how to stop aggression and possessiveness. The higher the position we're in, the more danger we may cause for humanity; so first, you'd better be enlightened, and then serve the world with greater understanding.

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai
California, U.S.A. November 30, 1993 (Originally in English)

Of course war is inevitable, and I'm equally grateful if they protect the world or they keep the peace, but to keep peace is better. It doesn't matter how big the war is, it can not go on forever if no one fights. If only one side fights, it gets fed up. It doesn't matter how aggressive a person is, if he continues alone in a war, then he gets tired and the war ends even more quickly. Sometimes we interfere with other people's wars, prolonging them and causing the loss of many lives.

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai
U.S.A. February 17, 1991 (Originally in English)

If we read the Bible, the Buddhist texts, or any other religious scriptures, we see that it is always stated that the Kingdom of God is within us, we are the temple of God, or we have Buddha nature within us. Now why don't we make use of this Buddha nature or the Kingdom of God within to deal with things, instead of using just outer material power, which is unstable, unreliable, and causes a lot of misery and the loss of the lives of many talented, young, beautiful, creative, intelligent human beings, which is a waste.

It takes tremendous creative power from God or the universal force to create a human being. It takes a lot of intelligence, time, money and love to raise one human being. Now, in just one second, it is destroyed, along with thousands and millions of others in war. That is very, very miserable. It is very unfair of us to do these things. It doesn't matter if we are right or wrong in war, it always creates misery for both parties.

We understand that even our enemies have souls, sentiments, intelligence, compassion and understanding. It's just that we don't sit together and talk. We don't make friends. We're not supposed to make friends with our enemies, so we sometimes forget that they are also human like us. Therefore, it is easy to slay someone whom we do not think much of or whom we don't hold in high esteem.

Inner Peace

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai
Hong Kong, May 28, 1993 (Originally in English)

We have always looked for peace in this world. Many nations and the United Nations, et cetera, have tried their best to reconcile broken ties between the countries that are having conflicts with each other - sometimes with success, sometimes without. It's not because the United Nations has not tried its best; it's not because many presidents or politicians are not pure in their motives; it is because many of our brothers and sisters have not truly found peace within themselves, and they are forever still searching for happiness and true peace outside. So long as we still have these brothers and sisters who are trying to look for peace and happiness outside of themselves, we will not have true and everlasting peace in this world. Therefore, most of us know that despite all the finances, all the time, all the energy spent in making world peace, we often fail. Even if we succeed, the outcome is only temporary, or if we succeed in having peace in one country, the next country will break out in war.

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai
Brisbane, Australia, March 20, 1993 (Originally in English)

People make war with each other because they identify too much with their bodies with the immediate needs of their bodies, with all the demands of their bodies. Therefore they kill each other. The only solution to this problem is to find a way to realize that we are not our bodies, and therefore no one opposes us and we are in no danger economically or politically. Enlightenment is the true and lasting answer; otherwise, we will continue to identify with our bodies and therefore try to fulfill the needs of the body, out of worry that other people will come and steal our crops, take our wives, or invade our nations. Some nations make war with each other because they want to expand their economic power. In order to feed their overpopulated countries, they fight to gain more land, to gain more of the economic market, et cetera. It all has to do with the body. Even though we say it is differences in ideals, it all amounts to bodily demands. So if we become enlightened, these wars will stop by themselves. We will realize truly the brotherhood of humankind.

Senator Alvarez has read Master's books and News magazines and watched Her videotaped lectures. He is deeply impressed by Her. For many years, he and his wife, Mrs. Cecile Guidote, have been committed to promoting environmental protection and using art as a form of education to help handicapped children become confident, capable and creative. When we visited the Senator at his office, he asked us to forward to Master, on his behalf, a book on ecological and environmental conservation, and a magazine carrying a news report on his and his wife's work on environmental protection and care for handicapped people. The couple is deeply concerned about the potential disasters that a climate change could bring to humankind if the ecology and environment are left unprotected and pollution continues unabated around the globe. They have elicited strong interest among Philippine young people to protect the Earth, and have tried to draw government attention to the need for environmental protection with the alarming warning that continued destruction of the environment could lead to disaster, destroy farms, and ruin the economy. What is even worse, it could put the country and its people in jeopardy.

During our visit, Senator Alvarez contacted the natural environmental resources department of Isabela Province and gave us the local contact phone number and address. The next day, we arrived at this government agency and met with the relevant authorities, who assigned a special escort to guide us on our field visit. We ferried across River Magat, over which reservoirs and dams have been built to generate electricity and supply people with water for drinking and irrigation. After a halfhour trip, we arrived on the opposite bank of the river. The first thing that caught our eyes was a lone, dilapidated hut surrounded by a vast expanse of land lying against a backdrop of overlapping layers of mountains. The hut was the rest area for local farmers, who came to plant tree cuttings in the plot of land in front of the hut and, when new leaves had sprouted, transplanted them on the plains or hill slopes. By so doing, the farmers could earn a living while conserving the land around the reservoir. We spent the night at a hotel. The following day, we met with the mayor of Cordon and rode in a jeep to inspect the hilly region.

Meanwhile, one of our fellow initiates was on a trip to Mindanao. This second largest island in the Philippines archipelago had suffered a severe drought that destroyed all its crops in July 1998. In response to a request by Cotabato Province's social welfare department, Master compassionately promised to build a water supply system for the more than two hundred households in Malinan Village. With Master's permission, I flew to Mindanao, where brother Nguyen and I met with Director Zaida J. Rinsulat at the social welfare office. When she learned that Master had sent us to help resolve the water problem, she immediately arranged to take us to the area.

As we drove along the narrow paths, we saw withered crops in the fields. Director Rinsulat told us that the crops had died from a shortage of water; farmers had been forced to abandon their land and move to other places to make a living. The people in that area were so poor that they did not have the money to dig wells or build irrigation canals. All they could do was pray to God for help. From the river to their home was a long distance along rugged paths that were exhausting enough to travel empty-handed, let alone while carrying a 20-liter-bucket of water! Ms. Rinsulat guided us directly to the water source for an inspection. Along the way, she exchanged greetings with the local inhabitants. She told us stories of children returning home with empty buckets because they were so thirsty trudging uphill that they would drink all the water that they had fetched. It made me sigh to see naked children waddling up the hill carrying a small bucket of water in their hands.

After we returned to the social welfare department, I gave Director Rinsulat a check and asked that the project commence as soon as possible. She stared at the check in disbelief and called her staff members to come and take a look at it, saying, "All this time, we have been wanting to build a water supply system for Malinan Village. We have requested help from the government but three months have passed and we still haven't received an answer. We never expected that someone from Formosa would come to help us." Then she added, "God must have sent you. Hes has heard our prayers." I replied, "Master is a representative of God, and I am here solely because of Her compassion; She has sent this money for your good use. She is aware of your needs." Some of Master's sample booklets were presented to the director, which she held carefully and attentively read.

While the project was underway, Filipino journalist Mr. Santos accompanied us on a visit to Alvarez's home. When we learned of his love for poetry, we presented him with Master's poetry anthology "The Lost Memories". He knew that we were vegetarians and invited us to a vegetarian meal at the local restaurant. On our second visit to his home, we presented him with a US$100,000 check contribution from Master. We also brought with us a few vegetarian dishes which we all enjoyed.

Sharing Master's poetry anthology with Senator Alvarez, a poetry lover.

Although the Malinan water supply project was scheduled to be completed in a month's time, the people's concerted effort shortened the work time by about half. Two water towers were built - one at the river's source to collect uncontaminated spring water flowing from between the rocks, and the other on level ground conveniently accessible to the people. The water towers were connected by pipes and the water was driven by electric pumps. Since the follow-up project needed additional funding, a second visit to this island was required. Director Rinsulat of the social welfare department mentioned with great enthusiasm that the Malinan residents were overjoyed and grateful to Master. They had painted Her name on the water towers. A child had told her that the water system was a dream come true. She gave me a letter and thanked Master and the initiates on behalf of the beneficiaries. The water supply system was extremely important to them, she reiterated, for it would ensure good harvests. This is not something that those of us who access water simply by turning on the tap can easily understand.

At the completion of the water supply system, the Filipino newspapers had also reported that the Moslems and Christians on this island had agreed to a cease-fire under military mediation. This was a good sign. It seemed to say that God's divine water had extinguished the raging flames of war and washed away the desires and persistent longing for power, fame and fortune that had long shrouded the souls of humankind.

Supreme Master Ching Hai recently has extended monetary assistance to needy artists and their families, victims of natural disasters, and disadvantaged children and elderly people throughout Au Lac. Since its founding many years ago, the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association has rendered humanitarian assistance throughout the world. This spring, the graceful stream of love and blessings of Master Ching Hai once again flowed through the entire nation of Au Lac, from North to South, to help alleviate the suffering of the Au Lac people, whose experience of adversity had become even more poignant with the coming of the New Year.

In accordance with Master Ching Hai's wish, volunteers from the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association traveled from Northern to Southern Au Lac, from cities to villages, to distribute gifts and provide comfort in God's love to those suffering on the Lunar New Year. Not only did the volunteers personally visit villages and residential areas where there were many ill and disabled people, but they also stopped to talk with, console and give the homeless, elderly, disabled children, and victims of natural disasters New Year's presents when they encountered them along the way, in hopes of brightening their lives.

With Master Ching Hai's gracious blessings, the volunteers flew into Saigon on January 26, 1999, and on January 28 drove to Hanoi to start their humanitarian journey from North to South.

NORTHERN REGION

After two days and two nights of non-stop driving, volunteers from the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association arrived in Hanoi on January 30, 1999, on a considerably warm and sticky afternoon. The group immediately started its itinerary of visits, bringing New Year's gifts to local artists and families of deceased ones. Volunteers met with these individuals personally to wish them a happy New Year.

The recipients were deeply touched by the compassion and generosity of Supreme Master Ching Hai. A person who was thousands of miles away and had never met any of them still showed Her concern for them and their families during the New Year holiday. They expressed again and again with all their respect and sincerity their deepest gratitude to Supreme Master Ching Hai for all Her love and compassion.

CENTRAL REGION

Leaving the North, volunteers traveled to Central Au Lac to comfort the elderly, abandoned children, and people with disabilities in this harsh land. Volunteers offered New Year's gifts and red envelopes wrapped with Master Ching Hai's love to each person, along with their best New Year's wishes.

In the northern and central provinces of Central Au Lac and other areas, where natural disasters have occurred year after year, volunteers from the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association visited and distributed gifts to the Association for the Blind, the Children's Orphanage, the Social Services Agency, the Center for the Protection of Street Children, and the Red Cross. Volunteers also visited the family of a deceased composer and a poet.

Later, volunteers met and presented gifts to impoverished families living in villages ravaged by floods. Thin and malnourished children, white-haired elderly people with bent backs, and people with illnesses and disabilities were all moved to tears. They conveyed their gratitude to Master Ching Hai, whose compassion and generosity were extended to them in this difficult time. Overwhelmed and moved with emotion and with tears in her eyes, one woman stated: "I'm truly, truly touched. Now, I will have money for new clothes this New Year. Thank You so much, Supreme Master Ching Hai, for bestowing on me this truly generous gift."

Traveling southward, volunteers visited destitute patients sharing New Year's red envelopes and gifts from the Supreme Master Ching Hai.

Volunteers also paid visits to the Vocational Training Center for People with Disabilities and Orphans. The children there were very happy and touched to receive presents from overseas. Volunteers also visited a service center for disabled elderly people and the blind. Volunteers next visited a center for orphans and the elderly, some of whom were deeply moved as they held the volunteers' hands, and with overflowing tears, said thanks to Master Ching Hai.

And then, volunteers entered the Village of the Lepers to distribute New Year's gifts from our beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai and to offer solace to each person. Besides New Year's red envelopes from the Supreme Master Ching Hai, volunteers provided two to three months' supplies of rice to these families. They also extended words of consolation and best wishes to the recipients for the New Year. The villagers responded sincerely that they were very happy and felt comforted by Master Ching Hai's compassion. One of the patients shared his heartfelt appreciation as follows: "I have spent over twenty years of my life here in this village. I am very touched by Supreme Master Ching Hai's noble love, which encompasses all of humanity. Our life is very poor and full of hardships... and Supreme Master Ching Hai's love replenishes our lives like a river and rain restoring vitality to a barren land."

Next, volunteers sent gifts to three hundred children from poor families, in the hope that they might be able to enjoy the New Year with their new outfits and monetary gifts. Volunteers also visited the School of Love where many orphans resided. While there, they also visited the Convalescence Center, which served children and the elderly with disabilities and some ethnic minorities.

SOUTHERN REGION

It was Master Ching Hai's wish that gifts be presented to people before New Year's Day. Volunteers thus tried to accomplish their mission accordingly and reach the Southern region in a timely manner. Upon arriving in the South, volunteers immediately went to visit some poets and composers, and personally presented New Year's gifts to 20 artists facing adversity, illness and/or old age.

Volunteers also traveled to the southernmost part of Au Lac, to distribute New Year's gifts to people there. Rice and daily necessities were purchased for homeless families, most of whom had been flood victims in the past. At the time of the visitation, they were without shelter and in need of many things. In addition, volunteers visited and extended offerings to various monks and nuns.

At the end of their trip, needy families were visited and monetary gifts were given to homeless flood victims who lived along the coast, and thus volunteers from the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association completed a successful journey from the North to the South of Au Lac, visiting many less fortunate people and impoverished Au Lacese artists with New Year's gifts from Supreme Master Ching Hai.

Supreme Master Ching Hai's eternal spring of generosity has brought the light of hope to these less fortunate people.

Contributions for An Ambulance

An ambulance contributed by
Supreme Master Ching Hai.

[Hsihu] Supreme Master Ching Hai made a special contribution to Hsihu, Miaoli upon learning that this rural township has long suffered from a lack of medical resources. In particular, an ambulance was urgently needed by the local community, to resolve the difficulties of villagers requiring emergency care and first aid. Initiates presented NT$1 million on Master's behalf to Hsihu Mayor Yang Hsiu-hsia at the local administrative office on March 8, 1998, hoping it would benefit local residents and help them to receive better care.

Perth fellow initiates pack a total of 27 cartons of clothes.

[Perth] On March 26, Cyclone Vance struck the town of Exmouthin, Western Australia. Vance was the strongest cyclone to hit there since records were kept. The damage to the town was extensive, with 5000 people reported homeless, having been evacuated with only the clothes they were wearing.

Inquiries showed that the most urgent need for the survivors was clothing. With several practitioners working in the clothing industry, the Perth Center set out to obtain the most needed items; 654 shirts, 243 shorts and pants, and 44 tracksuits with pants were purchased. Fellow initiates were fighting for time to pack these goods for shipment to the affected areas. Since the survivors were cared for by Government agencies, we were not able to deliver the clothes directly; however, the 27 cartons were delivered to a shipping depot to be trucked to Exmouth on Saturday evening.

Praying for the Kosovo People

[Vienna] The Kosovo conflict, which has drawn the participation of 16 European nations, the United States and Canada, has escalated into the largest war in Europe since World War II. The close proximity and relations among the European countries have generated fear and concern among their populations about the suffering and severe damage that the ongoing crisis could bring should it spread to other parts of the continent.

The Kosovo crisis in Yugoslavia has received extensive media coverage, as continuous fighting has forced thousands of innocent people to flee their homes. In response, fellow initiates throughout Europe have contacted each other and organized group meditation sessions at local Centers as well as Peace-For-Europe one-day retreats on Sundays. During group meditation and retreats, initiates pray that God will help all the suffering sentient beings in Europe. They pray that bloodshed among innocent people will be avoided and that the souls of those who died in the war will be uplifted and find peace. Initiates also pray for spiritual enlightenment and a bright and peaceful future for the people of Europe. Local Centers have encouraged those who cannot attend group meditation to meditate at home.

More than 20 Centers in Europe, with some in Russia are participating in the joint European peace meditation, following a similar time schedule. Convinced that the love generated through meditation is what they need most, the initiates believe that God's love not only has enveloped the European continent but also is blessing the whole world and the universe. As Master once said in one of Her lectures, "When we meditate together, we generate a very strong power. Whatever we seek will be realized. We should pray for world peace, for the happiness of sentient beings, and for everyone to be liberated and enlightened soon. When all of us together devote this great power to praying for the world, our light will grow strong and brilliant. If we keep our thoughts pure and pray for the benefit of the universe, of other people and of ourselves, but not for ephemeral material benefits, our prayers will be very powerful. We will be able to save the world. Whether the world will come to an end or not will not affect us because if we practice spiritually, there is no such thing as the end of the world."

The Manifestation of Love Blesses South Africa

The light of the Truth attracts
many South African people.

[Johannesburg] In South Africa, the disciples there were honored to share Master's teachings at the "Mind, Body and Spirit" Fair. Disciples noticed that many of the people coming to the Supreme Master Ching Hai booth were already aware of and attracted to Master's teachings. Apart from the many sample booklets that were distributed, we were also very happy that many people asked "in-depth" questions about spiritual growth, and looked forward to Master visiting the country some day.

Korean Kimchi Attracts Attention

Report from Korea
Korean fellow initiate won the
'Kimchi' festival contest.

[Kwang-ju] 'Kimchi' is a staple for Korean people, and well-known throughout the world. Unfortunately, most kimchi contain animal ingredients. In 1998, the 5th 'Kimchi' Festival was held in Kwang-ju, Korea. Hoi-yim Lee, a sister initiate of Kwang-ju Center, presented her own vegetarian version, which she had invented. A lot of people paid attention to this special 'kimchi' and she won the contest. Through this event, she had the opportunity to show how to make this healthy dish in a vegetarian way, and explained to everyone why the vegetarian diet is so important to human beings.

Ordinary 'kimchi' has salted fish in it, but sister initiate Lee uses only vegetables to make it. The KBS (Korean Broadcasting System) was especially interested and invited her to participate in one of their live broadcasts the next morning. It was televised all over the country, allowing the public to see the many advantages of vegetarian 'kimchi'.

The Light of Truth Shines on this Green Southern Pacific Island

Disciples at the Auckland Center host a series of activities to share the Quan Yin Method with others.

[Auckland] During the Chinese New Year holiday, the Auckland Center in New Zealand conducted a series of activities to introduce the Quan Yin Method and promote vegetarianism, offering the people of this lush green Southern Pacific island a chance to know Master and the Truth. For example, one event that initiates participated in was a Quan Yin Method information/book booth at the local New Year's fair, which attracted tens of thousands of people. Master's dignified appearance in photos and beautiful voice blessed the struggling sentient beings searching in this world. Her special blessings radiated the light of spirituality and love during the Chinese people's most important traditional festival.

Many people stood in front of the booth, reading books and asking questions before taking home information about the Quan Yin Method. We were delighted to see the Truth illuminate Auckland and joy fill people's hearts and enliven their spirits!
